Nirvana is another one. the whole "non mainstream" rock movement is around since 1975.

...But Nirvana was mainstream.

Underground music has been around alot longer than 75. In fact it's always been around. The Ramones for the most part were just a very influentical underground band. Still, the Dead Boys should get more credit, since it's actually their sound and look, not the Ramones sound and look, that the British Punk bands would pick up on, like the Damned and the Sex Pistols. Not to say that the Ramones didn't influence them as well, but it's quite obvious who the British bands most emulated. They were also just as much influenced by British Glam Rock and Detroit Garage Rock as they were the Ramones.

If anything Nirvana is overrated because their sound wasn't this pulled out their ass originality that it was made it out to be, since bands like REM, Pixies, Melvins, Meat Puppets Flipper, Black Flag, Replacements,...etc. had all done smiliar things, but that topic has done been beating to death as it is.

Here's another band I forgot to mention as hugely overrated. The Ramones were completly worthless, but they weren't as bad as the Clash. On that note obth bands reminded me of shitty Beatle rip-offs.

Midnight Express, seriously, a lot of those names you mentioned were all good, but...

50 Cent?

50 Cent is fucking terrible.

Have you even heard In the Club? No, I'm sorry, he doesn't belong in a list that includes DMC, Hendrix, or even Aerosmith.

Have you ever listened to music?

truer words have NEVER been spoken.

now, onto the pixies. i love the pixies. i really do BUT to say that their hard-soft-hard-soft formula for turning out the great songs was original is quite misleading since zeppelin had been doing it since day one. hell, rod stewart and the faces were doing it as well. not saying the pixies don't rule it hardcore but the style they are credited with isn't exactly groundbreaking.

Alternative media has been around since the radio was formed.

Alternative music started in the 60's which went to mainstream...

Here's another band I forgot to mention as hugely overrated. The Ramones were completly worthless, but they weren't as bad as the Clash. On that note obth bands reminded me of shitty Beatle rip-offs.

It was always quite clear that the Ramones weren't supposed to be hugely talented musicians or anything. Tommy, the drummer, hadn't even tried to play the drums before the other band members asked him (their recording engineer at the time or something like that) to when they couldn't find anyone who was able to capture the sound they wanted.

The entire point of the band's music can be simplified in two words often used to describe them: loud and fast... and perhaps catchy. Their first three (or even four or five if you really like them) albums are awesome, and it actually WAS a new sound at the time. Their guitarist Johnny actually stopped listening to ALL music when he picked up the guitar, just so that he'd be original. Sure, their well sort of went dry from there as their whole sound got stale and whatnot, but it was great when it first started, and I can't imagine denying that.

The Clash meanwhile, are teh-fold better than the Ramones I'd say, and plus, they had the versatility of the Pixies (or chronilogically, the Pixies had the versatility of the Clash) in that every album they made sounded completely different. Listen to "Should I Stay or Should I Go"... classic 60s-80s rock at its finest. Now listen to "London Calling," completely different sound. Now listen to "Rock the Casbah," COMPLETELY different sound. "White Riot," "The Magnificent Seven," "Police On My Back," "Lost In the Supermarket," "Rudy Can't Fail"... ALL different sounds, and anyone is bound to like some of them (or in many cases, all of them.) They took existing sounds like every other band, sure, but their music sounded fresh, and it still does, even when it's been ripped off by more bands than I can count on two hands.

Now, to retaliate against your Beatles point... niether band (ESPECIALLY the Ramones) sounds anything like the Beatles. Maybe one or two songs, but when you have such a wide range of sound like the Beatles AND the Clash had, you're bound to have two songs sound similar. But I still don't get where you get the whole "Beatle rip-offs" deal. "Oh, it's four guys, and they all have black hair. They so ripped off the Beatles!" "Hey look, a band that's from England. Beatle rip-offs!" They're completely different bands, and while one might be able to make a decent case for the Clash/Beatles sounding a bit similar in some cases, the Ramones are just... on a completely different side of the spectrum. Really.

Eh, I'd comment on some other stuff, but that's all I really wanted to get off my chest.

Well I really like Madonna's work, and always have. I cannot see how she is over-rated besides the fact some people are panning her current album, American Life, and it has influenced your opinion.

For me, they don't come anymore over-rated than 50 Cent. He's a fuckin' pussy that's had Eminem do his dirty work by sucking on his dick. Rap is crap.

I would never call Madonna overrated. I am slimply stating that like Metallica, she needs to retire from the music business. I heard songs off the new CD, and it isn't good. She was great up until Rey of light. Then she started to fall from grace.

50 Cent is where rap is going. 50 Cent is the biggest thing to hit rap in the last few years. He is going to get to Biggie like levels of props. Saying he is sucking Em's dick for a career is a slap in the face of 50 Cent who has been out since 1998. Eminem wasn't even big when 50's first out came out. Now, only people who don't really like rap are saying 50 is garbage. His lyrics, beats, and style is something to keep rap big.

And by saying rap is crap just shows you don't know what you are talking about. And the person who said In Da Club shows he isn't good, well, the song IS a club song and is about going to the club. Here "Gotta Make it to Heaven" or "Many Men" then say he isn't one of the better rappers ever.

I don't hate 50, but I think you're being generous in comparing him to Big. He's nothing special, IMO.

I've heard good rap music, as in the only rap music i'll tolerate, and 50 Cent doesn't even come close.

However if people get enjoyment out of his music, then great, it'll give you something to set your wedding to.
