Guest mach7 Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 This has to be the stupidest thing I've read this week... stolen from Rajah... who stole it from 1Bob... There has been some concern amongst various readers that WWE is in danger of a lawsuit from Marvel Comics regarding Mr. America looking like the comic book legend Captain America. While there are quite a few similarities, the costumes are different, and the name is different. There is no concern amongst WWE officials on the character at this time. While there are quite a few similarities? Please, someone extole the similarities for me, because I, as a huge comic book fan, can't seem to find anything past the fact that both men have the word America in their names... Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a stupid gimmick. I just hate it when stupid pieces of "news" like this make the rounds. It makes you wonder if 1Bob really does just sits in his basement making up ridiculous "stories" for his craptacular web site.
Mecha Mummy Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Marvel wouldn't want to do that... unless they want Hurricane to name-drop nobody but DC Comics guys....
LooseCannon25 Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 That's some dumb shit. I guess it's because they both have masks, both wear red white and blue, and both have stars on their outfits.......ooooooh, and they both have tight outfits on........In that case why didn't they threaten to sue The Patriot when he was in WWE. It's the same exact gimmick as Mr. America
Guest AndrewTS Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 I would think the Patriot would be more likely to sue than a comic book company. Gee, this is so retarded.
Guest Human Fly Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 I'd laugh if it was true, then Marvel Comics could own both of Hogan's character names.

It seems to me that all he's doing is responding to some questions from his readers, he doesn't say they're about to be sued. You can criticize 1Bob for exaggarating and even making alot of stuff up, but I don't think this is that bad.
Guest razazteca Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Capt America does has a star on his mask just like Mr Hog...........Mr America.
Guest Lightning Flik Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Just when you think this angle can't get any sillier, it does.
Guest Trivia247 Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Marval would have gotten on their ass for the Hulk stuff if Marvel was really that paranold. hell there are various examples of what they could have stepped in on......Hurricane...nah He plays a generic Superhero and before he went into this gimmick he really pushed his enjoyment of DC Comics and Green Lantern. Rhyno......well yes before WWE Rhino might have gotten a few calls for the referance to a Spider man Villian. Though Rhino is also a fricken Animal. Hulk Incredible is it not? Nahhhhhhhhhh Unless Mr. America came down with a Mask with wings on it and a Shield I doubt the gimmick is actionable.
Invictus Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Captain America actually has an "A" on his forehead, not a star. The star is on his chest. I doubt WWE needs to worry about this, especially considering it's just fan speculation.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 **buys gun** **buys bullets** **shoots self in head**
Guest AndrewTS Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Marval would have gotten on their ass for the Hulk stuff if Marvel was really that paranold. Actually, WWF/WCW had to pay to use the Hulk name. Hell, at the start of nearly any videogame with Hogan in it, you'll see copyright information about Marvel Comics. That's one of the reasons that when Hogan went nWo he started to go by "Hollywood Hogan."
Guest NoCalMike Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 I actually hope Marvel wins just so WWE would have to end this atrocity.
Guest WhenDanSaysJump Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Maybe Marvel should also sue the United States Of America, and the continents of North and South America, for having names bearing such an extreme likeness to Captain America.
Guest El Satanico Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Maybe Marvel should also sue the United States Of America, and the continents of North and South America, for having names bearing such an extreme likeness to Captain America. That's a terrible comparison and is completely inaccurate. Honestly why did you bother typing that? North America, South America and United States Of America aren't characters. Since none of those are characters they can't rip off a character, so why would Marvel sue them for trademark infringement? Besides all three existed long before Captain America. Once again...what was the point of typing that? PS: I know this wasn't a lawsuit announcement, but I hope they do sue them and win.
Guest Blue Bacchus Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Why do you hope that they sue and win? Do you honestly want the WWE to go out of business from bullshit lawsuits like this?
Guest El Satanico Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Do you honestly want the WWE to go out of business yes! there i said it... Yes, I want Vincent Kennedy McMahon's company to go out of business.

I was trying to draw a comparison with how futile and silly it'd be of Marvel to attempt to do anything similar vis-a-vis Mr America. Of course, my girlfriend is now standing behind me nodding smugly as I have provided further proof that I am CRAP with analogies. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Guest El Satanico Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Well, at least you admit to it being a terrible analogy.
Guest WhenDanSaysJump Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Well, at least you admit to it being a terrible analogy. Even if I'd wanted to defend myself, I'd only have been able to do so with other terrible analogies.
