"Whatever... *I turn down the volume*" Then he turns up Paul Anka--including "She's Having My Baby." My mother can be a little more tolerant. She was digging Santana, the Scorpions (especially the Moment of Glory album...but not "Rock You Like a Hurricane" of course). She even likes Alicia Keys since she heard it at work. However, she thinks all of the Beatles' later stuff is garbage. And she also thinks that most heavy metal bands are Satanists.

The gimmickry is what stops people appreciating that there is actual talent there. I'll appreciate that the gimmick is a big part of him, but you have to look beyond that. Hey, maybe it is an accident that he brings me as near to tears as The Smiths do, but I couldn't care less.

Because some stereo manufacturer decades ago decided to spell it bass and pronounce it base. It just happened to stick and became an industry standard. Maybe bass was a seldomly used spelling for a word that has the pronunciation of base. That's all the explanation needed.

The guy wasn't talented enough to be just a musician, so they amped up his image, promoted how out of control he was and it fell on it's face. Easily some of the most horrible lyrics ever put to cock rock guitar licks. It's still funny in that cheesy way though.

Rap is different, in order to get respect lyrically from rap heads, rappers have to write their own rhymes. Dr. Dre is a good producer or maybe one of the all time producers. To say Dre is a "pure rapper" is funny to me because he doesn't write his own rhymes. Like Dre, Puffy is not a rapper I look at them as entertainers.

Intelligence and taste in music or musical knowledge has nothing to do with each other. Saying it about Ja Rule is idiotic, but personal opinion aside saying it about 50 Cent isn't completely idiotic and is debatable. I find him terribly overrated and think he'll disappear from the radar sometime after the release of his second mainstream album, but he's light years better than Ja Rule.

The idea is that the music and lyrics are silly, he jumps around and screams onstage and then he puts the reserved act on in his interviews discussing the music in depth like it's the most important thing in the world. Like many, the PR machine tha got behind him didn't 'get' the gimmick, and so just promoted him as a guy who jumps around and stuff, and that's it. He was lumped in with pop punk bands and directed towards kids, the mainstream exposure killed his character. Again, I'll accept that *maybe* it was completely unintentional that i nearly jizzed all over my stereo when I heard that album, but I can appreciate that it caused me to do so. He wrote said album, so I love him. I'll also concede that the album didn't have that effect on many others, but at least they should appreciate that he's not just some guy they picked off the street and decided to give the gimmick to. He created it and they did a fairly decent job of ruining it. Still, the second album IS COMING~! As soon as he changes the title and the cover to something less offensive. Another example of the restrictions he now faces. But hey, diff'rent strokes.

Firstly Avril co-writes her songs. As for Daniel Johns. Well. I'm as much a mark for Silverchair as I am for Bret Hart, so I'm bias. Lyrics written by Daniel Johns are THE SHIT! He is an unbelieviable lyracist and his lyrics fit his music perfectly. Yes...... when he writes crap the crap is really really smelly, but to say he is as bad as Avril is blasphemy. When Daniel Johns writes a good song it is fucking brilliant. He shits all over most music and lyrics now days.

I find both 50 Cent and Ja Rule to be both talentless and irritating, but 50 Cent gets the edge since, despite the fact he sucks, his songs get non-stop airplay on radio and MTV. I can't change the stations without hearing one of his songs! And I just don't get why people love him so damn much. And the funny thing about the Ja Rule and 50 Cent comment was that it was said by one of the wannabe-gangsta thugs in my class. The kid who said acts like a thug, so I was suprised that it was HIM, and not one of the girls in my class who love 50 Cent because of his "thug" image, (which in itself is not true but that's another story), or someone who is not into rap, who said this. Here's some more 50 Cent-related idioicy from an IM conversation I had with one of my friends back in May: Me: Do you still listen to Ja Rule? Friend: No. Ja Rule is ghey and stupid. Me: Whew. Good. Friend: I listen to 50 Cent. Me: Ugh. You actually listen to that mush-mouth?! 50 Cent sucks! Friend: What?!!! 50 Cent is da MAN~! How can you say he sucks? Me: His flow is sub-par. He has good beats and that is what carries his songs. And the only reason he is so damn popular is because he is backed by Eminem. Friend: You don't know what you're talking about! Me: Why don't you listen to some good hip-hop? Friend: What do you mean? Me: Listen to some old-school hip-hop. Listen to Run-DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J. Listen to some Mos Def. Friend: They all suck! Public Enemy sucks dick~!!! 50 Cent is the best rapper ever! Me: You don't know what is actual talent then. Friend: You don't know actual hip-hop! Don't be hatin' on 50. For me, if you're a shitty singer, your music often is crap. Doesn't matter how good or bad the lyrics are or if you wrote them. If the lyrics are good, and you wrote them but don't have the best voice, maybe I'll like you. If you're a manufactored group or "artist" that got picked to sing cheesy pop lyrics, fuck you. And what pisses me off most of all is that term. "Artist." If you take a paint-by-numbers kid and haphazardly slap watercolor on it, don't call yourself an "artist" you pretentious cocksucker. If you're well respected by fans and critics alike, and there is true artistry to your craft, and you wrote it yourself, you can be considered an "artist." If not, stick to "singer," "performer," or "musician."
