Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 3, 2003 There's a difference between self-effacing humour and being the constant BUTT of jokes. Kurt is the guy who wears the tiny cowboy hat, hasn't had sex with a girl, kisses gold medals that were down someones pants, etc. Foley was established as a _serious_ wrestler first and then when the crowd was 'in' on the joke, he'd start cracking fun. Angle has _always_ been a joke. The crowd is laughing WITH foley when he makes those self-effacing jokes, they aren't saying "HAHAHAHA Mankind can't win!!!". With Kurt it's like "HAHAHAH He looks so stupid!!"

Guest AndrewTS Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Something that people are overlooking: This is being used to sell the 1st SD! only PPV. Does this crap make you wanna buy it? Doesn't matter. It has to make "casual fans" or whatever the hell you call them want to buy the shows. Not that WWE does that well either, but *shrug*.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 3, 2003 No. But I wouldn't buy it anyways so I'm the wrong guy to ask. RRR: Waiting for PrideFC Total Elimination 03 and UFC 44: Undisputed.

Guest Mulatto Heat Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Benoit STILL not in a storyline Hey. Don't sell himself short. He has TWOOOO!!! 1) He hangs around a goof that fucks up all the time for God knows what reason, and after tomorrow.. 2) He has a masculine black woman lusting after him. My God, can you FEEL the intrigue?
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 3, 2003 2) He has a masculine black woman lusting after him. They should rename her "Man" as sort of a winkwink nodnod Of course, then Benoit would start fucking her.

Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Where did it say Shaniqua joined with Benoit?
Guest BoboBrazil Report post Posted July 3, 2003 I just watched Smackdown. Shaniqua gave Benoit a look after the match and they kept staring at each other. Eddy turned on Tajiri because Tajiri was tossed onto the hood of the lowrider by Hass or Benjamin. When Eddy saw this he started freaking out. Crowd was hugely behind Eddy during the match. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted July 3, 2003 I personally found the Angle/Lesnar segments to be funny, although Im not sure if having funny segments is a good thing or not. Big Show added to the Angle vs Lesnar match makes sense since it would be stupid of the WWE to blow off a big rematch between Angle and Lesnar straight up on their first Smackdown only PPV right before Summerslam. Mysterio vs Nunzio was decent, but nothing special. Eddy getting all mad at Tajiri over messing his lowrider truck up and then plowing him through the windshield was gold. I don't know what was going on at the end of the Benoit/Rhyno match but it was wierd. The match was actually worse than the one from Velocity for the most part. Cena got a decent amount of face reaction, which I probably attribute more to him wrestling Billy Gunn. I imagine Taker Cena will be on the PPV. Cena's rap was hillarious. The Hogan thing is obviously a work. I found it funny that Mr. America/Hogan are "fired" the day before July 4th though, but that was no worse than firing Foley before Christmas with his professed love of all things Christmas. Seeing Zach wrestle with one leg for the first time, color me impressed, but theres no way he'll manage to hang around long enough to ammount to anything. The Tag Title Match was the best match of the night easily. Orlando Jordan vs A Train was the worst. Overall its a decent show but it registers a "blah" in my book. Guest Goodear Report post Posted July 3, 2003 I eagerly await your "Billy Gunn isn't horrible" article. Billy isn't horrible. He's a middle of the pack kind of guy who really fares better in tag matches than singles because of his questionable conditioning. Smackdown's major problem is that they don't have a lot of middle of the pack faces or a lot of top of the card heels. That's why you have Big Show highlighting PPVs forever and Cena having to drop all the way down to Spanky after his title shot.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 3, 2003 You know, once you put aside that any and all interest in the Vengeance main has been killed and that Angle and Lesnar may be ruined, it's not that bad of a show AS, tell us again how you're not overreacting. How exactly is "any and all interest" killed just because they're not wrestling on one show? And how are they ruined? Nope, no overreacting there, eh? You actually said "LOLoLOLoLollO111111!!LOlolllloLOlOl Angel spiled mlki! end tneh he made brok due phUPS! BUUTTTT he woodernt do tem! LOLoLOLoLollO111111!!LOlolllloLOlOl I' gots to odred tis pPpV! King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2003 BIG engaging in rhetoric I take it you haven't seen Gowan wrestle yet RRR. He's not 'just a cripple', he can wrestle better than half the Smackdown roster. Considering he does it on one leg, that's a pretty big accomplishment. Can't wait for Smackdown to air, and some guys who've never seen him get the chance to see him. Of course, I doubt he does much but bump. Better than half the roster?! Okey dokie, let me seat you with the March Hare Alice cause you're clearly in wonderland. He *is* just a cripple - have you LOOKED at the way they've been treating him over the past few months? All those gags at his expense? And here's a guy who beats the Big Show - the guy who is in the Main Event of the next PPV. Zach Gowan, a guy who will *never* main event _any_ PPV because he's a sideshow freak. Once the novelty runs off it's over. And given it's been less than 10 months since I freaked out over a one-legged wrestler doing moonsaults, imagine how long it will take an audience that will see the kid over-exposed by Summerslam. BIG: Agrees 100% Although Tajiri/Eddie is going to own kick ass. The crowd will be dead for it. They WANT to cheer Eddie but Eddie is heel and Tajiri is Japanese. Do the math. Who didn't? Benoit appears on one Velocity and suddenly he's dead and buried. No, actually it's *Benoit gets totally dropped from the Main Event, doesn't get put in a storyline for 6 months, stuck in a meaningless midcard match at WM, doesn't even get on the backlash PPV, is in a throwaway 6 man at JD inwhich he spends a forgettable amount of ring time in, jobs to Cena clean after Cena get's made out to be Takers bitch a week before, jobs to the Bashams, jobs to O'haire - both of which are meaningless jobs BTW but they all add up to the image that "Benoit is a loser" (Benoit STILL not in a storyline) and THEN Benoit gets to wrestle on Velocity. So he was already dead and buried, Velocity was just his funeral service. 1) So you haven't seen Gowen then. I'm not talking about how he's being booked to look. Angle's looking like a fool atm, Billy Gunn is being pushed...so on the logic of Gowan sucking because he's made to look like just a cripple, Billy Gunn is better than Angle is he? But basically, now he's finally got his contract HOPEFULLY he'll be the surprise wrestler. In other words the marks will think 'Oh he's just a cripp...HOW THE FUCK DID HE DO THAT?' during his matches. Oh, and it must be so heartening for someone to fight back from adversity, and work so hard to do the job he loves...just so he can be called a sideshow freak. How heartening...makes all the suffering he went through worth while. 2) Tajiri should have gone heel rather than Eddie, I agree with you. And what does being Japanese have to do with anything? 3) Glad you've cleared that up And I look nothing like that picture...I'm much chubbier...
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Billy Gunn sucks. He's not even carryable most of the time. And he is not even over this time....his opponents get face heat and the crowd only pops for Torrie, not for Gunn and Torrie, just Torrie. The Billy Gunn opponent being turned face by the crowd is in its third week now, isn't it? niko
Guest Goodear Report post Posted July 3, 2003 Maybe I just have a different "suck" level than most people but compared to people that really suck like Nathan Jones and La Resistance; Billy is like a golden god. I'm not saying "Oh my goodness, Billy is like Benoit times four and can be the man to win the belt from Triple H" ... I'm just saying he's a midlevel talent and not absolutely terrible. I'm not even going to discuss heat with you anyway since you've already set up an impossible argument to even debate. If he gets a face reaction, its all Torrie... if he doesn't, its all his fault. Why should I even bother hammering out an argument when you've already set up a 'damned if he does, damned if he doesn't' scenario.
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted July 3, 2003 I was at the garden. This is what happened. His music played, everyone groaned. Kanyon came out, big face cheer. Billy on offense - crickets chirping. Kanyon on offense - LETS GO KANYON! BILLY SUCKS! Billy points to Torrie - silence. Torrie lifts arms - YAH! GO TORRIE! Torrie lifts Billy's arms, cheers. There was not ONE thing Billy did, in what was a decent match that got any reaction. It wasn't me and my Billy Gunn bias drowning out the other 15,000 people. I'm not saying fire him - but to put the title on him is asinine, as their is NOTHING coming from the crowd that warrants any type of push save the fake pumped in Smackdown chants. niko

Billy isn't horrible. He's a middle of the pack kind of guy who really fares better in tag matches than singles because of his questionable conditioning. According to the International Smart Mark Measuring Scale , ® and ©, (i.e. Chris Benoit) Billy couldn't even be carried to an okay match by the best wrestler in the company. That equals problems. You were under the impression that this STUPID booking would sell the PPV, and I found that unbelievable. You evidently misinterpreted my impressions ... I was under the impression that you were overreacting when you claimed that the PPV had lost "any and all interest" and that the two stars, who are still over, were "ruined". I personally don't think one show (no matter who's used or not) will effect the buyrate for this PPV.

I was under the impression that you were overreacting when you claimed that the PPV had lost "any and all interest" and that the two stars, who are still over, were "ruined". They have fucked up and fucked up and fucked up and fucked up as regards to this world title program. They needed a turn around show so they wouldn't be tripping over themselves trying to get people to care three days before the show. They delivered push ups and milk spillage. Who's gonna get blamed when no one orders this show? I personally don't think one show (no matter who's used or not) will effect the buyrate for this PPV. This world title program hasn't had a well booked show yet.

After the initial shock of a one-legged wrestler I find myself asking "ok, now what?" and the fans will be the same way. And what does it say about all those guys whom Big Show squashed? What does it say about Rey Mysterio Jr? A cripple was able to beat this giant but the cruiserweight champ couldn't? And in terms of booking, Billy Gunn is booked WAY stronger than Kurt Angle but in terms of place-on-the-card if the two had a match the fans would expect Angle to win. The WWE has spend the past few months pointing and saying "he has one leg!!", so yes, he is "just a cripple". But hey, my perception may be off cause I'm not the one saying this rookie is better than half the smackdown roster. Oh, and it must be so heartening for someone to fight back from adversity, and work so hard to do the job he loves...just so he can be called a sideshow freak. How heartening...makes all the suffering he went through worth while. I'm not saying anything the WWE and Vince McMahon haven't said already. 2) Tajiri should have gone heel rather than Eddie, I agree with you. And what does being Japanese have to do with anything? Japanese wrestlers traditionally get buried-beyond-belief in the WWE - when that happens their matches tend to have no heat. And when a Japanese wrestler *does* get over, they get buried even further down the card. It's historically proven. That, along with Eddie turning heel when the crowd wants to cheer him, will make the crowd for the match dead.

Actually, Big Show took a f5 and an angle slam before Zach pinned him, so it doesn't really mean anything. I agree the novelty will wear off quick though. I've seen tonight's Smackdown match and his matches in TNA and all he can do is dropkick, punch, and do a moonsault basically.
