Guest Steve J. Rogers Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Thinking of how Melrose Place can lay claim to being a 90210 spinoff just thought I'd list some great spinoffs that I can think of off hand right now: Great: -Fraiser obviously has showed to be an equal to Cheers' standard of excelence, may be a bit pandering and a victim of NBC Must See Overhype but it still has lasted in a time where shows just do not. Speaking of which, Fraiser is not Cheers' only spinoff. Great trivia question, name the show, and any "Cheers" characters that appeared on it -Star Trek TNG, DS9, VOY Yes all three can be considered tenous at best as TNG being 80 some years after the days of Kirk can only reference the days of Kirk, DS9 is a TNG spinoff only because the main character had a life altering event happen to him in an event mentioned on a TNG episode and VOY's first episode deals with things first brought up on DS9 and TNG but all three did last 7 seasons and hold up well as their own series -Maude, Jeffersons, Good Times, ect All In the Family was a seriously underatted franchise. Even though some just couldn't cut it like "205 (or whatever the address was) Hauser" which had African-Americans in the 1990s living in the Bunker's old houe they had some great characters that made great shows of their own -Mork & Mindy, Laverine & Shirley By the same token, take a popular bubble gum TV sitcom, create one-off characters and BOOM you have yourself a recipe for "hit" spinoffs. Then again, there is "Joanie Loves Chachie" Well thats it for now, I'll see whatelse I can come up with later Steve
Guest JangoFett4Hire Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 The Tortellis starring Nick tortelli and Casey Kasems wife...
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Best: A Different World: Spinoff on The Cosby Show. It's funny because Lisa Bonet was suppose the show's main focus. She ended up leaving after 1 season, the show then went on for like another 6 seasons.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Angel was a good spin-off, as was Happy Days
Guest Youth N Asia Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Thinking of how Melrose Place can lay claim to being a 90210 spinoff just thought I'd list some great spinoffs that I can think of off hand right now: Spinoff and ripoff are two different things. Since no characters or storylines carried over from one show to the next it's no a spinoff. Unless that did happen, I really didn't watch MP.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 The Lone Gunmen sucked (X Files spinoff). I haven't yet decided yet on the two Law and Order spinoffs (I don't really like SVU but Criminal Intent is decent), and I don't really like CSI Miami as much as I like CSI.
Guest Big_Jay101 Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Worst -Brady brides Best- A different World
Guest El Satanico Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 What about the Married With Children spin off which I believe didn't even last for one season. That 80's Show Futurama Wasn't Soap a spinoff?
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Dammit, Futurama doesn't suck. the MWC rip-off would be Unhappily Ever After, which starred Nikki Cox, I believe.
Guest TonyJaymzV1 Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Best Angel- Definently..love it more than Buffy. Worst Lone Gunmen-Just...awul
Guest Youth N Asia Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 The MWC one was Vinnie and Bobby I think, with Joey from friends. he was on MWC a couple times and had one MWC episode pretty much all to himself. I hate Futurama. And That 80s Show could be good at times, but they did too much "Look, we're in the 80s" *canned laughter*...and the great thing about That 70s Show is they DON'T do that. And Angel is very good...but not as good as Buffy.
Guest El Satanico Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Dammit, Futurama doesn't suck. the MWC rip-off would be Unhappily Ever After, which starred Nikki Cox, I believe. Being from Alabama isn't an excuse for you to be illiterate. This thread is about Spin-Offs...Spiiiin Offff...not Rip-Offs. Married With Children had a SPIN-OFF starring one of Kelly's featured boyfriends and his father. They were these two grease monkey new jersey types and the boyfriend was played by Matt Leblanc. I put two shitty spinoffs and two good ones...so there's no claims of Futurama sucking coming from me.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 http://us.imdb.com/Title?0103576 Whoa! it was Vinnie and Bobby, how I knew the name I'll never know. I actually watched the show. Anything with Joey Lauren Adams can't be too bad.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 follow up. here's another MWC spinoff, with some of the Vinnie and Bobby characters. Although I don't remember this one. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0101222
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Doesn't a spin-off have to include a character from one show becoming the main character of another?? Ala Fraiser?? In that case, the star treks aren't spin-offs, they are franchises - ditto with Futurama. They are made by the same people, but feature completely different casts (cept for Ds9, which had O'brien and later-on Worf... had Worf been in Sisko's place THEN it would have been a spin-off). Angel is probably the best spin-off I can think of (though, admittedly, I am not a big spin-off expert.) It was able to take the mythos of one show and mix it in with their own and develop a unique style and successfully incorporated cross-overs. Like Fraiser, but without the repetitiveness.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Thinking of how Melrose Place can lay claim to being a 90210 spinoff just thought I'd list some great spinoffs that I can think of off hand right now: Spinoff and ripoff are two different things. Since no characters or storylines carried over from one show to the next it's no a spinoff. Unless that did happen, I really didn't watch MP. I believe Jake appeared on few episodes of 90210 before Melrose Place debuted, and Kelly was on the first episode of Melrose. Not much, but the shows did somewhat intertwine.
Placebo Effect Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Are we all forgetting Time of Your Life, the Party of Five spin-off starring Jennifer Love Hewitt? I believe that was the title, buy my God was it bad. Mad TV did a very funny parody of it though that was totally off and has to been to believe. It ended with Jennifer on the phone, bawling her eyes out, and speaking to the main character of PO5; "I want to come home!"
DrVenkman PhD Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 If I'm not mistaken (and never watching an entire episode, I could be) the show Wings takes place in the Cheers / Frasier Universe and used to have Norm hanging out at the airport bar. Anyway, I'd be telling a lie if I said that when I was younger I wasn't a big fan of Family Matters, which was a Perfect Strangers spin-off. Could Captain N be considered a spin-off of The Legend of Zelda? Link and Zelda appeared in an episode as the same characters... I'm going to guess, without ever seeing it, "Golden Palace", the Golden Girls spin-off was bad. I hear nothing but bad things about Archie Bunker's place as well. "What's Happening Now?" was an interesting idea.. but not that good.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Wasn't Soap a spinoff? Not sure, but wasn't "Benson" a spin-off from "Soap"?
Tully316 Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Bad spin-off's Three's a Crowd & The Ropers Grady, Sanford, The Sanford Arms (Sanford and Son) AfterMASH Mayberry RFD Gloria (All in the Family) Fish Enos Models, Inc. Booker Living Dolls
Guest Zack Malibu Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 "Top of the Heap" was the first Married With Children spinoff. Remember the episode where Al couldn't figure out the song he liked (Hmm Hmm...Hiiiim) and went around asking everyone about it? His friend in that episode was Charlie Verducci, who's son Vinny was dating Kelly at the time. That's how they spun Top of the Heap off.
The Dames Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Are we all forgetting Time of Your Life, the Party of Five spin-off starring Jennifer Love Hewitt? I believe that was the title, buy my God was it bad. YOU SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH! I watched every episode! JLH and Jennifer Garner as roommates? *drools* .... Ok, it wasn't great. Dames
Guest Goodear Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Gomer Pile off the Andy Griffith Show.
Guest Razor Roman Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 follow up. here's another MWC spinoff, with some of the Vinnie and Bobby characters. Although I don't remember this one. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0101222 "Top of The Heap" was the only one I remembered. It had Matt LeBlanc and his father living in some apartment with a pet cat.
Guest Aero Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 How about Daria? I love Daria, and I watch it anytime I see it on the other Digital Cable Nick channel.
Guest starvenger Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Doesn't a spin-off have to include a character from one show becoming the main character of another?? Ala Fraiser?? They are made by the same people, but feature completely different casts (cept for Ds9, which had O'brien and later-on Worf... had Worf been in Sisko's place THEN it would have been a spin-off). I'd consider a show based on an existing character or franchise, inhabiting the same 'universe' and using existing continuity to be a spinoff. Hence TNG, DS9 etc are spinoffs, while "Friends" is not a spinoff of "Mad About You", although they exist in the same 'universe', so to speak. Most of the Peter Engel shows aren't spinoffs (SBTB excluded, obviously), they're simply "copycat" shows that I think inhabit the same 'universe'. wrt "Living Dolls", was that the spinoff of "Who's the Boss?" with Leah Remini as a teen model?
Guest Vyce Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 DS9 was good for the first couple seasons. Then they totally aped Babylon 5 and it went very downhill, very fast.
Guest starvenger Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 DS9 was good for the first couple seasons. Then they totally aped Babylon 5 and it went very downhill, very fast. I think that's pretty much the exact opposite feeling of most people. B5 didn't have Evil Lesbian Kira though...
Betty Houle Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 Wasn't Soap a spinoff? Not sure, but wasn't "Benson" a spin-off from "Soap"? BENSON was indeed a SOAP spin-off and it was a prett ok show for a while.
