Guest Thunder Rising!!! Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 It has been some time i have came across a thread like this before, so i will start one here because the discussions will always be interesting. I don't frequent the music folder so i hope a similar thread has not been done for some time. I appreciate any great guitarists like Clapton, Hendrix etc. but my personal faves would be Gary Moore, Slash and Richie Sambora Name some of your faves here and feel free to explain why you prefer them though i am too lazy to do so. I hope this thread does not turn out into a childish quarrell of which of them suck ass or anything like that.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 B. Brian's Favorite Guitarists: Edward Van Halen B.B. King John Petrucci David Gilmour I don't think I need to explain why these guiarists are my favorites. All you need to fo is listen to them and hear their greatness.
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Clapton Hendrix Jerry Cantrell Zakk Wylde The Iron Maiden Crew Dave Mustaine Steve Vai John Petrucci
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 My 7 favorites, in no order. Tony Iommi Andreas Kisser Trey Azagthoth Kerry King Jeff Hanneman Frank Zappa Muddy Waters
Guest BAR Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 (edited) David Gilmour Eddie Van Halen Slash Eric Clapton Jimmy Page Jimi Hendrix Kirk Hammett BB King Buckethead Adrian Smith Tony Iommi Pete Townsend Angus Young Edited November 9, 2003 by BAR
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 As far as Idolization goes, Being a bass player, I naturally gravitate more towards them. I try to model my style after Claypool meets Geezer meets John Entwhistle..only heavier. I dabble in guitar though, even if I'm abominable on the instrument..strings are too little..
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Like AoO, I play bass as well. My Idolization is between John Entwhistle, Steve Harris and Mike Inez. Oh and I like Jason Newsted as well.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 The first three I understand completely...but I HAVE to ask... Why Newstead? honestly. Edit: Other bass players I dig tremendously.. Audie Petrie-Acid Bath Alex Winters-Cannibal Corpse Jaco Pastorious Victor Wooten-Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Patrick Hearn-Frank & The Mothers.. Jack Bruce-Cream, FZ..
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 He's an adequete bass player, but when he was in Metallica he's kinda behind everybody not saying somethin, unless its important. It kinda fits my personality though. And I prefer Jason over Cliff anyways
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Omar Rodriguez Johnny Greenwood The only true guitar geniuses in the world right now...
Guest ArkhamGlobe Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 My favourites: Pete Townshend Jimi Hendrix Tom Verlaine Robert Fripp Ry Cooder David Gilmour Phil Manzanera I play guitar myself (I'm not particularly good, but anyway), and Townshend is the one I look up to the most and he's probably the biggest influence on my playing.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Skip James Muddy Waters BB King Johnny Marr Joe Strummer Chet Atkins Jimi Hendrix Steve Jones Eric Claptain Kerry King Jonny Greenwood Pete Townsend John Frusciante As far as bassists go: Jaco Pastorius Chuck Mingus Victor Wooten Les Claypool John Entwhistle Geddy Lee Scott Reeder
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Jerry Reed Mike Nesmith (never gets any credit) Glen Campbell (vastly underrated) Bonnie Raitt Terry Kath Link Wray and pretty much your usual suspect of Claptin, Hendrix and the like
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Top three favorite guitarists: Angus Young Stevie Ray Vaughn Trey Anastacio Not necessarily in that order, they play such varied styles of guitar it'd be hard to rank them 1,2,3
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Zakk Wylde Dave Mustaine John Petrucci The boys from Shadows Fall (I forget their names right now) Rich Ward That is all. As for influences... Kerry King and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein are my primary guitar influences. So it's old-school pure fucking thrash metal meets melodic horror-based punk.
Guest Steviekick Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Zakk Wylde Dave Mustaine John Petrucci The boys from Shadows Fall (I forget their names right now) Rich Ward That is all. As for influences... Kerry King and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein are my primary guitar influences. So it's old-school pure fucking thrash metal meets melodic horror-based punk. Doyle's a cool guitarist, but some of Bobby Steele's early stuff with the Misfits is a little better than Doyle. But Doyle is overall much more cooler, and I really like the guitars of the Newfits albums a little better. I'm going to try to pick some guitarists that aren't mentioned here... -Edge -Buckethead -Joey Ramone (as minimalistic as you can get ) -Tom Morello - Michael Amott (Arch Enemy/Spiritual Beggars) - its guitarists like him that make Sweden rock the world.
Guest Steviekick Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Now that I think about it...it's a shame that so many of the early Misfits stuff was rerecorded/reedited/overdubbed by Danzig. Most of the guitars/bass on all their CD's have been rerecorded by him and Eerie Von.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Bonnie Raitt I do not understand what people see in her as a guitarist..she picks slow country and slide guitar, and doesn't do it better than anyone else. As far as country guitarists go, my favorite is easily Junior Brown.
Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 guitar: Satriani mikael akerfeldt oystein aarseth Ivar Bjornson Abbath Doom Occulta Me and a bunch of others that i cant think of right now
Guest gangsteruwa Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Well, most of the ones I like have already been mentioned except for one. Al Di Meola. I think he was shredding before anyone even knew what shredding was. I find inspiration in a lot of guitarists for many different aspects of my playing. Too bad I still suck. haha

Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 16 notes per second?? That's fucking sick. That's almost a thousand notes per minute.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 At least only one person said Jimmy Paige, the most overrated guitarist EVER.
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 At least only one person said Jimmy Paige, the most overrated guitarist EVER. and no one has mentioned Cobain either... except for this post.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Jimmy Page isn't even close to being the most overrated guitarist ever. That title belongs to Eddie Van Halen, a man who's only virtue is that he can play really fast. His playing has no soul, life, or death. It just sounds like a screaming, brainless fish.
Guest Crux Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Santana Hendrix Eric Clapton Stevie Ray Vaughn Randy Rhodes
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Stevie Ray Vaughn Wow, I can't beleive I forgot him.
Guest Thunder Rising!!! Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Please include the bands that these guitarists had played in or is playing in as well as some good solos from them that so that i can check out their stuff.
