ROH 8/16/2003 Results

Recommended Posts

Hey. I just got back from the Ring of Honor show in Fairfield, CT. This show was

somewhat mediocre for a ROH show, but will most likely be remembered for the final

match.

The show opened with Homicide squashing Prince Na Na in a non-advertised match. Homicide then called out Steve Corino, who of course, did not come out. This was pretty much just an angle to build up their match for later that night.

1. Tony Mamaluke & John Walters def. Dunn & Marcos - Some great double teams from both teams. Dunn & Marcos were way over with the crowd. **1/2

2. Matt Stryker & BJ Whitmer fought to a draw. - These two guys can really both work and were way over with the crowd. One half was chanting “Let’s go Stryker,” and the other half, “Let’s go Whitmer” throughout the majority of the match. The winner was to be included in the field of honor, but since the match went to a 15 minute draw, they are now both to be included, as was announced by the announcer. ***1/4

3. Special K def. SAT & The Backseat Boyz & Carnage Crew (Scramble Match) - No different than any other ROH scramble match. Not that that’s a bad thing as this is truly a match that gets the crowd going and it features solid spots. ***

4. Alexis Laree def. Special K’s Becky - A pointless women’s match from a promotion that promised it would stick to actual in ring performance. DUD

5. Christopher Daniels def. Xavier - This match was for the #1 Contender Trophy. Daniels was extremely over with the crowd. However, this match was disappointing as it just never seemed to get going. It was just too slow and nothing seemed to work. **3/4

6. Deranged def. Jonny Storm vs. Hydro vs. Slyk - A match that was highlighted by some great spots. It was fast-paced and kept the crowd involved. **1/2

7. Samoa Joe def. CM Punk (NON-TITLE) - Joe just didn’t seem to have it tonight, but CM sure shows great promise both on the mic and as a worker. Quite the stiff match, however. **1/2

8. Homicide def. Steve Corino. This match ended when Corino passed out from what looked like a STF, and Corino’s manager threw in the towel. This was easily the match of the

night as both men juiced hardcore. It was highlighted by a somersault suicide dive by Homicide. Corino moved out of the way and Homicide hit his back flush on the guardrail

right in front of me. It appeared at first that Homicide might have been hurt, legit. Nonetheless, he turned out to be alright. This was just a bloody brawl that I would definitely go out of my way to see. ****

9. Danny Maff vs. Low Ki - This ended early as a super-stiff kick to the head by Low Ki caused Maff to be hurt, legit. The ref stopped the match as it appeared that Maff had a concussion of some sort. Low Ki was outside the ring and visibly angry. Rob Feinstein and Chris Daniels, among others, ran to the ring to see to Maff. I believe that an ambulance was called for him. While Maff was in the ring, and being tended to, the announcer stated

that the event was over and thanked us for coming. He asked for all of us to leave the building in an orderly fashion.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This show had a pretty hot crowd that was decent in size. It started off super hot, but was brought down a notch by Daniels vs. Xavier. The Homicide match helped to revive it, though. Like I stated before, it was mediocre, and highlighted by the Homicide and Corino brawl. However, the Low Ki and Maff incident put a blemish on the night. Hopefully Maff will be alright.

And the follow-up to this story, from ROH booker Gabe Sapolsky-

Hey everyone,

Danny Maff was KO'ed in Fairfield. He went to the hospital, but was discharged after getting an X-Ray. I met up with him at a rest stop later in the night and he was fine and in good spirits - he and Low Ki are both sorry that the match had to be cut short.

Before all of you start questioning whether this is a work or not, it's not. Now I'm not saying it won't be used as an angle in a rematch down the line, but make no mistake about it this definitely wasn't the planned finish. Everyone at ROH wants to thank people in attendence in Fairfield for a successful CT debut in front of a lively crowd.

Take care, Gabe

Fair dos. I must admit when I first read the results I was sure it was an angle. Low Ki should sort that part of his repertoir out, because knocking your opponent out from a kick to the head is completely unnaceptable.

It was a total shoot.

Hydo looked very concerned backstage and one of the ROH staff actually informed DeVito it was a shoot.

It was a great show- I'll go more indepth later

That was the most fun I've ever had at a wrestling ahow, period. Hopefully I can get front row everytime, it was just awesome.

I thought Homicide may of broke his back on the guardrail dive. I thought the Ki thing was shoot from the start, when feuding Joe and Daniels both came out and checked on Maff.

Apparently Corino suffered a broken eardrum, two blackeyes, and numerous stitches from the match..wonder how Homicide was.

True. But in his defence, its not like he makes a habit of it.

He's built a name for him self built partly on his stiff martial arts kicks. One accidental KO here or there can't really be cause to criticise him IMO.

I'm not saying he is in the right, but based on what I have seen of Ki, I think it was probably a genuine accident rather than a result of him being careless.

It was an accident, which happens, but Ki should take this as a sign to be way more cautious with his strikes. Maff is one of his best friends and he hurt him, and he ended the show on a sour note.

As for the show itself, this sounded really underwhelming. Not a lot of star power either, as Raven, Red, AJ and a couple of the other regulars weren't there.

The show was still awesome though Jay.

Stryker v. Whitmer and Homicide v. Corino were both excellent matches.

Daniels v. Xavier was a fun solid match. The scramble and 4-way both did their job.

Joe v. Punk was decent and Purists v. Dunn-n-Marcos was another good match

4th row is GA Nevermortal.

Okay- I was far away from you.

I was by the entranceway.

I hit Corino, got touched by Alexis and Storm marked out for my Regal shirt.

Really? One time I tried sitting Fourth Row and I got kicked out by ticket holders.

One thing I regret -

When Steven DeAngelis told everyone to get the fuck out, I was leaving and I saw CM Punk limp by. I didn't even notice it was him until my friend said "Good match".

I MISSED A PERFECTLY GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO SHAKE HIS HAND! BAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Whoa- Are we friends?

I saw CM Punk after the show limping- and you know what I said:

Good match

My friend's a liar then. He told me he said good match to him.

Bob Barron, did you accidentally morph into my friend Matt?

Did your friend wear a Regal shirt?

I wanted to talk to Punk for a while like I've done before but because of Maff's injury and his injury I'd figured I'd leave him alone.

I'll post my ROH report in a bit

Perhaps there were many people saying 'good match' to Punk.

It was a good match.

Ring of Honor Show Report-

One of the few enjoyments of my summer came from being able to attend Ring of Honor shows. One of the problems of living in Toronto- aside from the SARS was that ROH didn’t run up there so I had to wait until the summertime to see ROH.

June saw Wrestlerave 2003 featuring Homicide killing himself, Punk tapping a gusher and me learning that Sumi Sakai does not speak English. I did meet Chris Daniels though and got to rave with Special K- I had a great time and couldn’t wait the three weeks to see DBD.

Death before Dishonour came around and I learned the value of getting there early as I got to meet the whole roster. The show was incredible and lived up to the hype. After the show I got to talk to my favourite ROH wrestler and WWE bound Paul London for a few minutes which was totally awesome and a dream to come true. To not sound gay- I also talked to Alexis Laree.

With college coming around the corner- my summer of Ring of Honor was coming to an end with August 16th in Fairfield being my last show. I was excited about the card as Homicide v. Corino, Low Ki v. Maff and Dunn and Marcos made know the show would be great.

I got to Fairfield at about 3 pm and walked in and saw Carnage Crew, Hydro, Dunn and Marcos and the Outcast Killahs. I was a bit shocked walking in and seeing all these guys but DeVito was cool and immediately broke the ice and started talking to me and enjoyed my Regal shirt. I talked to Dunn and Marcos and asked them about various tag teams. They said they’d like to kick Sylvain Grenier’s ass, enjoy WGTT but don’t like that they stole their gimmick and they don’t watch TNA but Loc was ragging on AMW. I think everyone was joking around.

Me: Who you guys booked against tonight?

D-n-M: We don’t know yet.

Me: You guys should face Alexis.

Dunn: That’s a great idea- you should be the booker. DeVito- He thinks we should face Alexis.

DeVito: I’d like to face her in a naked bed match.

Me: Does that violate the Code of Honour?

Dunn: Well not if you shake her hand.

Dunn and I laughed about how the Outcast Killahs were such losers cause they never win a match.

The Carnage Crew told me they would be going to the sleaziest, dirtiest nudie bar in town- after they went to the Waffle House first. I hung out with them for a bit more but then they left to go work out in the gym.

Xavier came in and I asked him about working TNA.

::Xavier looks at me:: Do you like TNA?

Me: Well it kinda sucks.

Xavier: Yea- So I don’t really want to go there.

Me: Yea- who wants to go to Nashville just to get hit in the guitar by Jeff Jarrett?

The SATs came in with their brother- Willie Maximo who is also training to be a wrestler. I figured Mikey was training him but then I found out that Willie was being trained by his brothers. I can’t wait till he debuts- get the You Fucked Up chants ready. They told me that Red is in Japan.

Low Ki and Maff came in at the same time. But to keep the spirit of kayfabe alive Maff stayed behind to talk on his cell phone. So we told Low Ki that Maff is afraid he was going to kick his ass right then and there. When Maff came in- We told him that Low Ki told us that he was scared and was preparing for the beating of a lifetime.

The Purists came in with John Walters being really cool. I saw J-Train and he was yelling BILL UP BILL UP BILL UP or something like that. He’s so funny.

Daniels, Punk and Joe all came in together. So much for kayfabe. Well Daniels was kayfabing and he was being heelish to us. We argued about a spot on TNA and then I told him to no sell Triple J. He said he would tell Jarrett and everyone in the locker room that.

Me: Hey Joe- after you beat Punk you should stick a joint in his mouth and light it up.

Joe: Dude- I’d probably end up smoking it myself.

I talked to Lit and Deranged of Special K for a while. I asked Deranged to please don’t piss of Low Ki again and he said he learned his lesson. Lit: We had to give him a lot of pills that night. I told Lit I wanted another rave and that they should crash TNA and do a rave.

Lit: The crowd would riot when they realised there was no banjo.

I saw Becky Bayless and was saddened to find out she wears a lot of makeup. Still got a HOT ass though. Gary Michael Cappetta told me he thought David Penzer was better then Michael Buffer.

Then the show began:

I was buy the entranceway the whole night.

Homicide v. Nana-

This was a short inoffensive match. The crowd went nuts when Homicide called Rob a fruitcake.

Purists v. Dunn and Marcos-

A fun match. The Purists are a great tag team and do some sick double team moves. The best was when D-n-M got in control and posed in mid-ring and did some AIR GUITAR!~ I’d love to see the Purists v. AJ and Red as they could stretch Red into oblivion. My friend went to slap Mamaluke’s hand and he just looked at him and got all pissed- funny stuff.

BJ Whitmer v. Matt Stryker-

Okay- I’m sold on Matt Stryker now. This match was incredible and easily 2nd MOTN. Both guys just killed each other getting near fall after near fall. The divided crowd was a nice touch and made the match much more special a la Dragon v. London. After the match I turned and saw Gabe and mouthed 5 more minutes- but he just shrugged his shoulders and said sorry. I hope these two hook up again- I want a rematch now!

Scramble-

Same old, same old. Honestly- I’ve seen so many scramble matches that they don’t really stick out anymore. This served its purpose and was a fun match.

Alexis Laree v. Becky Bayless-

Alexis comes out to the White Stripes which makes her that much more cool. I don’t know if Becky was playing her gimmick or she just sucks but yea- she sucks. This was just to calm the crowd down and I had no problem with it as it was silly and gave me a good laugh.

Christopher Daniels v. Xavier-

I think the heel v. heel aspect of the match kind of hurt it as neither guy could really work as a face. It was still a fun match which included some really nice spots. The ending reminded me of Angle v. Benoit from Unforgiven 2002. Daniels v. Joe should rock on September 20th.

INTERMISSION-

I go backstage (well kinda not really) and see GMC and John Walters. John praised Regal and said he was a good choice for a favourite wrestler.

Gary and I started talking and I told him I was going to school in Canada for journalism and he immediately got interested. He started talking to me about being a good writer and gave me some tips on being a journalist. We ended up talking for a long time and he was just incredibly cool for taking the time out to help out a budding journalist. So if I ever make it big- I owe Gary Michael Cappetta.

After talking to Gary I saw ALEXIS LAREE. Alexis was wearing a sports bra and you could see a bit of her thong. (Take that Malibu) I praised her for her choice in entrance music and she shook my hand. I talked to her for a few seconds and then shook her hand again. She’s still going out with Joey. Alexis is incredibly hot in person and very nice.

SECOND HALF-

Four Corner Match-

This was the usual fun four corner match with everyone hitting their spots to impress the crowd. The funniest spots were at the beginning when Deranged and Hydro tried to get out of the match by fingerpoking each other. Slyk looked good and the match got the crowd into the show.

Joe v. Punk-

Punk cut his usual intense prematch promo. It’s funny how at first no one was throwing up the ‘X’ and now the guy actually has a fanbase and a lot of people in the crowd were throwing up the X. Joe and Punk just beat the fuck out of each other and Joe did all his usual spots. Joe stretching Punk with the Boston Crab was a unique finisher. I guess they gave up on getting the Triangle choke over.

Homicide v. Corino-

What more needs to be said? This was incredible. It started out slow and then kept building and building. The ring introductions were hilarious as were the streamers. Homicide’s CRAZY MOTHERFUCKING TOPE was just that. Corino just took the beating of a lifetime and these two men left it all in the ring. Just insane. After the match one of Homicide’s friends kept asking that water be brought out- so I guess both men were just dead. Corino looked in rough shape.

Low Ki v. Maff-

We all thought it was a work at first- but then I heard DeVito being told it was a shoot- and Hydro looked really concerned. The match was great while it lasted and I would love to see a rematch. I just hope Maff ducks next time.

This was an incredible show and I had a great time. For only FIFTEEN DOLLARS I got to see some amazing work and some of the best talent in the world. ROH makes sure that every show is special and the fan friendly atmosphere and the fact that the wrestlers are so personable makes going to a ROH show a fantastic experience.

I can’t wait to see ROH live again- I know it will rock.

Take what? You shook her damn hand and saw a thong. I got to hug her, shake her hand, get a picture, and an autograph.

And Joey Schmoey...I'm still flirting with her in Cambridge.

LOW KI ISSUES APOLOGY OVER INCIDENT LAST WEEKEND AT RING OF HONOR

by Mike Johnson Updated: 8/19/2003 3:40:34 PM

Low Ki issued the following statement of apology regarding an incident that happened at the end of the Ring of Honor event this past Saturday in Fairfield, CT:

An unfortunate series of incidents happened at last Saturday Night's ROH show in Fairfield, Connecticut, a series of incidents for which I owe an apology. I was scheduled to work the last match of the night with my best friend Dan Maff.

We both like to work a strong style, especially for the demanding ROH audience. For many reasons, on Saturday Night, everyone in ROH was determined to put on a solid show. One of those reasons was because the crowd was less than expected, and we all wanted to make a great impression in this new market for ROH, so the next time we came back everyone in attendance would bring a friend to see this awesome promotion put on a great show. In the early stages of this, the last match of the night, I hit Dan Maff with an errant kick which knocked him for a loop. There was no way to continue the match. He was out. It was my fault. I have no excuse for what happened next.

Outside the ring, I hit ROH cameraman Doug Gentry. I was so upset about what had just happened and was not in full control of my actions. I was out of line, and without sounding corny, I broke the code. The code of ROH, the code of this industry, and the code of this very professional and proud locker room.

I offer no excuses for my actions, as they were inexcusable. I only offer an apology, and wish there was a way for me to express just how sorry I am for my unprofessional display. I hope in future I will have the opportunity to be a better representative of the company and of this business.

Low Ki
