Vern Gagne Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Thoughts on the past week and the week coming up.
Guest Deebo Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Mike Williams is the best WR in the country thats all
Vern Gagne Posted September 2, 2003 Author Report Posted September 2, 2003 ARGH. This is hopefully the last College football thread of the board.
Art Sandusky Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 College football deserves twice as many threads. February-August is just waiting for football season, it serves no other purpose.
Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 What is the problem with having threads by conference? There are only likt foru or five worth talking about and those four or five deserve their own thread.
nl5xsk1 Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Fuck the "4 or 5 worth talking about" mentality. I went to Colorado State University, of the Mountain West Conference. Obviously on name value alone, the MWC wouldn't get any love on this board. But anyone that watched the CSU-CU game on Saturday night knows that the teams in the Mountain West can compete with the big 4 or 5 conferences. Yeah, there's a lot of shwag in the MWC, but CSU or Air Force can play with almost anyone. There can be individual threads for the powerhouse conferences, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the rest of the teams.
Vern Gagne Posted September 2, 2003 Author Report Posted September 2, 2003 People can create any threads they want. I just thought it would be easier to have one large thread. Either that or a weekly thread. Top matchups of the week Florida at Miami ULCA at Colorado Maryland at Florida St. Oklahoma at Alabama Washington St. at Notre Dame Marshall at Tennessee
Edwin MacPhisto Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 My input on this week: as a tried-n-true Virginia Cavalier, let me just say that I hate separated shoulders. Dammit. The only good thing about QB Matt Schaub's injury is that he has about a month to repair before he's really needed. For once I'm glad that UVA backloads the schedule and doesn't face FSU, NC State, and VA Tech until the second half of the season. With an improved running game I think we'll still be able to roll past South Carolina and Western Michigan without much trouble. The rest of the action wasn't particularly thrilling for week one, but I did love watching the Terrapins got shocked out of their minds. Nonetheless, I hope FSU/Maryland is on national TV this week, because that's going to be a fun one.
Bored Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Hey Maurice Clarett is suspened for the year. FINALLY! I'm sick of hearing about it. "Now starting for your Toronto Argonauts...."
Spicy McHaggis Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 College football deserves twice as many threads. February-August is just waiting for football season, it serves no other purpose. Damn straight. My thoughts... USC has the best defense in the country. The two question marks, safety and middle linebacker, had two of the best performances: Bing had an INT and a fumble recovery, Tatupu had 12 tackles, 2 sacks. You don't need a Carson Palmer when you're throwing to Keary Colbert and Mike Williams. Leinart is dandy. If the Trojans beat Arizona St. and Notre Dame, both away games, we will win the National Championship.
phoenixrising Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Top matchups of the week Florida at Miami ULCA at Colorado Maryland at Florida St. Oklahoma at Alabama Washington St. at Notre Dame Marshall at Tennessee Ahem...that's "UCLA", not "ULCA". Of course I'm probably the only one who gives a crap. I don't know how much of a top matchup Marshall/Tennessee is... the new Marshall QB had five turnovers vs. Hofstra. If he does that against Tennessee they'll be out of it early. Who are the leading Heisman candidates anyway? Clarett is gone, Pickett is probably out of it and Sproles got hurt. Roberson threw three picks against Troy State. Manning had a good game but Ole Miss nearly lost to Vandy. Rivers was 26-30 for 340 yards and three scores, but against a Division 1-AA team. Seems like a distinct lack of top players...then again last year four of the five Heisman finalists (Palmer, Banks, Johnson and McGahee) came out of nowhere.

There's not as much "shwag" in the MWC as there is in the other mid-majors. CSU is a legit top 25 team. New Mexico is getting there. Air Force and BYU usually have solid programs year in and year out. Utah and UNLV are decent. The only easy wins are over an Adam Hall - less SDSU and Wyoming. The MWC is the best mid-major conference in college football, followed by C-USA, the MAC, the WAC and the Sun Belt.
Art Sandusky Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Top matchups of the week Florida at Miami UCLA at Colorado Maryland at Florida St. Oklahoma at Alabama Washington St. at Notre Dame Marshall at Tennessee Miami SMASH~! I expect Florida to be unranked on Monday morning. UCLA and Colorado is a tossup for me. Florida State continues to spur on the Maryland decline after Maryland being in the Orange Bowl a mere season ago. Alabama wins in what is or isn't a shocker dependent on who you talk to. Just about any SEC mark or person who watched last year's tremendous game says Alabama wins, and I agree. Washington State will hopefully get de-clawed by Notre Dame. I'm an unabashed Notre Dame mark, almost to the degree that I am Tennessee. Here's to another fantastic season, minus the loss at the peak of their rankings. Like you need to ask me who wins in the Marshall/Tennessee game. I may or may not be there in person, I look forward to it.

Guest The Grand Pubah of 1620 Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Florida at Miami ULCA at Colorado Maryland at Florida St. Oklahoma at Alabama Washington St. at Notre Dame Marshall at Tennessee Florida at Miami-Miami will have troubles early, but will come around and bring the Gators back to reality. ULCA at Colorado-Colorado in a close game. Maryland at Florida St.-FSU in a typical squash. Oklahoma at Alabama-Bama in a close typical Bama game. OSU wasn't impressive last week. Bama showed that all the bullshit they've been through is behind them. Washington St. at Notre Dame-Norte Dame pretty easy. WSU is overrated, IMO. Marshall at Tennessee-The Vols should have no problem beating them by 14-20 points.
Agent_Bond34 Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 College football deserves twice as many threads. February-August is just waiting for football season, it serves no other purpose. That, I agree with. Florida at Miami UCLA at Colorado Maryland at Florida St. Oklahoma at Alabama Washington St. at Notre Dame Marshall at Tennessee Miami Colorado Oklahoma Notre Dame Florida State Tennessee It's too bad Tennessee and Marshall didn't play last year.
Vern Gagne Posted September 3, 2003 Author Report Posted September 3, 2003 I can't wait to see Hansell Bearden and Troy St. play the Gophers. Sure it will be a blow out but that's the greatest name in sports.
nl5xsk1 Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 A reason not to hate K-State: http://www.big12warzone.com/spc/fark/6Wild...ldcat+Pride.jpg That picture almost outweighs my passionate hatred for K-State grad Michael Bishop ... but almost ain't enough. I still hate K-State. And phoenixrising, I actually agree with you about the MWC being underrated. It's a surprisingly good, and deep, conference most years. It's just that the teams tend to lose the big games against the major teams in other conferences, so they never get any respect on a national level.

Bored Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 Look out now...here comes Wake Forest! They easily beat N.C. State today after they won at Boston College last week, who just manhandled Penn State today. Not sure if this is a sign of how good Wake Forest is or how bad Penn State is. Yikes and Ohio St. only beats San Diego St. by THREE! That's not a good sign. This is looking like a day of upsets. Memphis just beat Mississippi (bye bye Eli from Heisman race), Purdue is losing late to Bowling Green, Virginia without Schaub is getting blown out by South Carolina, Washington St. has jumped out big early on Notre Dame.
Art Sandusky Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 GOOOOOOOOOOO VOLS!!!! Man, the newspapers are going to be disgusting to read tomorrow after the big South Carolina win. More Holtz worship, whee. Did anyone see that SICK helmet-to-helmet hit near the end of the game that put the Virginia safety down with the stinger?
The Ghost of bps21 Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 My Bowling Green team starts out strong again this year!
kkktookmybabyaway Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 Any day when Penn State loses is a good day...
Rob E Dangerously Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 Ohio State wins by 3 over San Diego State Which game with a #1 ranked team will be closer, McNeese (#1 in I-AA) v. K-State or Oklahoma v. Alabama? Just one more note about McNeese State, they're probably better than some Division I-A teams. And other scores for the day Memphis 44, Ole Miss 34 Michigan 50, Houston 3 With 1:22 left in the first, Ball State 7, Mizzou 6 Central Michigan 40, New Hampshire 33 Washington State 19, Notre Dame 3
