The NWO in 2002

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm sure nobody in WWE's top expected the Hogan love to return, but the fans sure did so any original plans with Hogan I'd like to know.

I'm sure the NWO wasn't supposed to bomb so what were the original plans with them? Adding HBk to it made it interesting, but with Hall fired, it wasn't great as it could have been.

The only one that I know was that HHH was going to say No to joining the NWO at Vengeance leading up to a Nash / HHH at SS, with HHH going over I'm guessing.

And off-topic who was supposed to go over at the HHH / Undertaker originally planned for Backlash?

Problem was that Vince booked faster than even WCW's old "NWO Hyperbooking" (to use a Keith term.) I remember Hogan's debut interview saying he could see himself turning face way down the line. Instead he did it after his very first match.

The NWO would have worked if they remained a novelty act. Hall, Hogan, and Nash would have worked greater as a mouthpiece for a new generation of heel stable guys. They were great in their first night, interrupting a cliche'd Austin promo and the Rocky thing needs to explination (I'm the only guy on this board who loved the ambulance bit, by the way.)

Of course, the ultimate use of these three guys as NWO would have been if Vince wouldn't have fucked up the Invasion so incredibly hard. They could have used Hogan's nostalgia pop and had Hollywood Hogan as a WWF babyface in the Steve Austin "badass people cheer for" mold. Imagine if the WCW war was done properly and Vince cut a promo bringing in the NWO, saying that he sent them to WCW last time to ruin the locker room and wreck the company (a conspiracy theory that had quite a bit of backing among marks and semi-smarks in the 90s) and now he was "bringing them home" to fight the new WCW. It would have worked perfectly.

Ah well. These guys don't know the definition of "novelty attraction" it seems. Of course, neither does Hogan.

With my casual fan short memory I remember Austin as the only guy getting involved in this nWo revival. With the occasional 6 man tag match with Bradshaw and Big Show. So other than Austin who was suppose to be in the main event picture vs the nWo?

That's something that still haunts me to this day.

Your main event tonight, the nWo (cheers) vs Stone Cold Steve Austin (more cheers) and his partner... Bradshaw! (....)

Why Bradshaw?

And it seemed like every Raw Flair would say:

"I know you're upset about not getting a title shot Austin, but I promise I'll make it up to you. Tonight you'll have a tag team match with Bradshaw against the NWO..."

Yeah, THANKS Ric. That really makes up for it.

Nothing at first because Vince was just pulling shit out of his ass. Later though, BookDust. I remember them trying to get the Dudleys to fight the NWO, but the Dudz were busy with other things.

The failed Bradshaw push...ah yes.

Who had it worse: Overpushed Cowboy Bradshaw or Masturbation Advocate Faarooq?

This was before Nash's quad tear and Hall getting fired. I think it's fair to assume they thought Nash and Hall could get the NWO over with some new lackeys (Xpac, HBK...).

Which isn't totally unreasonable.

Not sure if you're referring to me, but what I meant was why trade Hogan and just leave the feud unresolved like that? That basically killed their heat and left them with no real purpose on the show. And it's not like Hogan really did anything of note on Smackdown anyway.

It was always planned to be Hogan/HHH, but at first, Hogan was slated to job to HHH. After Vince saw how over Old-gan was, he decided to let Hogan win instead.

When they then finally realized that Hogan wrestled for crap, they had him drop the belt at the next chance they got to Taker.

If they had done that from the start it would of been MUCH better.

Instead of fucking around with Hogan and the nWo, the Outsiders could simply come out during a Hogan match, beat the holy shit through him, state that they have a new, improved and more efficient nWo ready to take Hogan's place and introduce HBK & Syxx.

IS IT REALLY THAT FUCKING HARD? Vince is retarded. He could of at least made that angle hot for a good few months, if anything, but he fucked it up quicker than the Invasion, and it was said that the nWo was Vince's 'pet project' that he was very fond of.

Idiot.

I don't think they really got anything right at all with the NWO. No direction, made to look stupid by Austin, feuded with Bradshaw, had members changing for weakly explained onscreen reasons etc.

Can anyone think of anything they did right?

Killed it?

Had HBK wrestling HHH at Slam instead of the originally planned Nash?

I liked how they murdered Rock.

However that all blew up in their face when he was back with his ribs taped (after being hit by A FUCKING TRUCK) the week later.

Ah, politics.

Oh but we were rewarded with 3 months of that shit the year after.

Lucky.

Yeah, but the HBK match was added to a strong card to make the best PPV of the year 2002. It helped.

The Nash matches just capped off already-shitty shows, so it turned out alright in the end for anyone who just buys the good stuff.

The novelty DID NOT wear off at NWO 02. I'm sorry but I marked like a bitch for that Rock beating armed with one of the only Edges Hall pulled off in his tenure. Aside from the horrible truck thing (which would have been ok had it been done months before and only hit the ambulance once), that was atrue mark out moment foe me.

I heard Austin was to job to Hall at WM, but had this changed. Is this true?

Supposedly, Vince and possibly Flair were supposed to interfere and Austin was supposed to job, but he challenged it, thus ruining their weak ass explanation for the Brand Extension.

The Hogan mega push went in the wrong direction............those crazy Canadians cheered for Hogan even though he had weeks of heel promos of him talking to a cardboard cutout and an attempted murder.

Canada does not know that is good for them......the father of sports entertainment knows best. You were suppose to boo Hogan.

I didn't see what the problem was for Austin. The entire justification of having a brand extension RELIED entirely on Austin's actions in that match, and he took the selfish route. Not to say Hall wouldn't of done the exact same thing had he been in a identical situation, however Austin should of shown a little fucking backbone and took one for the team.

IMO.
