Scaffold Match

Recommended Posts

For the most part, scaffold matches are pretty much a joke - except for a couple (namely the Road Warrior/Midnight Express match at Starrcade '86 and the ME/R'n'R at Starrcade '87), they are usually really bad.

A scaffold match involves, well, a scaffold, that is erected over the ring, usually about twenty or thirty feet in the air. The object of the match is the knock your opponent(s) from the scaffold. That I know of, no one actually ever fell off the side of a scaffold, they more or less would make their way under the structure, hang for a minute, and then fall to the ring below. Jim Cornette fucked up his knee REALLY badly by falling from the scaffold at Starrcade '86. What usually makes the match really bad is that, most of the time, the wrestlers involved are scared shitless to be up on that thing, so they spend most of their time trying to keep their balance which makes for a really shitty match.

The worst one ever was at Great American Bash '91, pitting PN News and Bobby Eaton vs. Terry Taylor and Steve Austin. To make matters worse, the match was a "capture the flag" match, so the wrestlers didn't even have to fall off the scaffold. It's pretty widely regarded as the worst opening match in PPV history.

I think the best-booked Scaffold Match was "High Incident," between Tommy Dreamer and Brian Lee. They brawled around the ECW Arena for about 10 minutes, brawled their way onto the scaffold in about 2, then fought atop the scaffold until Dreamer pushed Lee off in 3 minutes. And the ring was filled with tables, so bumps became easier to take (meaning that the loser would fall off the side instead of hang then fall).

That match was the best I can remember in a long while!

Here's a scaffold match question I've been wondering for a while.

Back in like, 1995, when Razor and Jarrett were fighting over the I-C belt, WWF magazine said something about the two having a scaffold match on a house show, and hinted that they could have one on PPV soon. Now I DOUBT this ever happened, as I don't recall the WWF ever having scaffold matches before, and I doubt they'd start on a house show. But, I figured it could have happened in Memphis or something. So, did this ever really happen or did WWF mag just make it up like I suspect?

The WWF tested the ladder match and Royal Rumble on house shows before debuting them on ppv. It wouldn't surprise me that they would try a scaffold match at a house show before hand and Jarrett would be the kind of guy to suggest one. Obviously it didn't go well or Vince was just able to see how hard they are to pull of well.

I can't see them running a scaffold match on a house show...that's too high profile a match to waste on a non-televised event...also I'd imagine that the risk of injury was pretty high, and I doubt the WWF would wanna run a match like this while Vince was in his Disney phase.

I do remember one of the Apter mags discussing the possibility of the Razor/Jarrett feud escalating to the next level (from ladder to scaffold), which leads me to believe that someone inside the WWF (maybe Jarrett or Bill Watts...he worked for WWF in 95, didn't he?) was trying to push for the match.

I wonder why WWE has never had a scaffold match. It would go well with their monthly gimmick/most brutal match.

Yah, Grimes/Jack had one at Freefall on 2/23/03. It resulted in Grimes taking a 40 foot fall. Check out http://www.geocities.com/joycebarber2001/g.../grimesjack.htm for full info on the feud.

XPW then had another scaffold match, but this time with an Exploding Ring addition, a few months later with Angel and Supreme. Angel was tossed off and crashed 40 feet down into a ring that exploded (literally) upon impact.
