Angel axed to make way for repeats

Angel axed to make way for repeats

WB President, Jordan Levin has found himself constantly defending his decision since announcing that the network giant was axing Angel from its schedule. Under a huge amount of pressure from fans and the media, Levin said, “We have a lot of veteran shows that are aging, and we’re going to have to make room for new programs."

One of these new programs includes Dark Shadows, a gothic soap opera about a vampire that first aired in 1966 but was axed five years later due to poor ratings. The WB has high hopes for the series and has recruited the talent of John Wells, better known for his work on dramas such as ER and The West Wing. But the audience it is aimed at are the fans of other vampire shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel who have been made to feel alienated following the networks decision. One WB viewer said, “Well the WB just lost me in watching their new show. I would have watched it because I love vampire shows and maybe I would have liked this one, but dropping Angel for this? They will never see me on that station again unless it is for Angel.”

Levin continued to go further into explaining why the show about the soulful vampire was not renewed for a sixth season. He said, "We need to create timeslots where we can repeat shows."

So it would seem that a new series of Angel has been turned away in order to create time slots for repeats. A viewer of the WB said, “I don’t want to see constant repeats on my television! I want something new not something old and tired. The new season of Angel has been a breath of fresh air. I was looking forward to seeing the sixth season.”

The decision from the large network may not have been the right one especially if the ratings are anything to go by. The WB are currently showing repeats of Smallville on Sundays where it fails to top 3 million viewers with audiences preferring to tune in to never-seen-before shows on other stations. But fans of the show about Clark Kent’s early years are already showing their disapproval for the new series which is also currently being aired. They have described the episodes as, “poorly written.” One viewer said, “I hope the future is a brighter one for Smallville, and includes more clever scripts than the past two weeks have demonstrated.”

So while the network fails to hold the interest of long-time fans of its shows, the main aim from the WB appears to be to draw in new audiences in an attempt to climb the ladder in the ratings battle. As Levin continued to talk of the reasons why Angel was axed, he said, “The show had a loyal core following, but it didn’t have a tremendous amount of new audience upside." One has to question the decision from Levin to buy the rights to Dark Shadows which is from the same genre as Angel - opting to take "new" over "already established."

The head of the WB remains adamant that the decision was the right one and maintains that, “This isn’t about the WB bailing out on one of its top shows."

It is not just the fans who are baffled by the decision from the WB to cancel what the President of the network admits is “one of its top shows,” but people in the entertainment industry are also scratching their heads.

Jeph Loeb, who co-developed Buffy: The Animated Series with Angel creator, Joss Whedon said, “All the people who were involved in the show from the very beginning really gave it their all. I don’t think there are any lazy episodes. They put a lot of heart and effort into a very difficult premise and came up with a show that I’m a very big fan of. I’ll miss the characters and I’ll miss the writing, because I think it was very smart."

Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer, Drew Greenberg added, “Why was that decision made? The show is doing so well, and they were having such a good year. It’s a decision I don’t understand."

Even Smallville creator, Al Gough fails to make sense of the saga. “I don’t know why they cancelled Angel,” said Gough who may well be worried about the future of his own show on the WB network. “With Smallville on at 8pm and Angel at 9pm, we had a really good block of programming and a lot of fan crossover between the two shows. Considering the ratings and the quality of the show this year, we were shocked that they cancelled it."

USA Today’s well-respected Critic, Robert Bianco recently wrote, “No series is having a much better season than Angel.” He went on to say that the decision to cancel the show was hard to take.

Fans, critics, writers and producers all remain shocked that the show was cancelled when it was doing well in the ratings and was receiving praise from all who tuned into it. Joss Whedon’s quote from a recent statement sums up the general feeling perfectly, “You wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body.”"

Whedon remains as eloquent as ever....

A friend of mine just sent me this link but I haven't heard anything about this. Maybe this is something else we can do.

Save Angel

Fans of Vampire Show Protest With a Good Deed

Tuesday, February 24, 2004

An effort to save the cult favorite TV show "Angel" from extinction has taken on a new dimension that is helping the needy. Fans of the WB series, which was given its pink slip by the WB last week, are purchasing boxes of Wheaties to donate to food banks in order to raise awareness about the show's plight. The Wheaties connection came about because the title character (played by David Boreanez) is often referred to as "The Champion of the People" and Wheaties is "The Breakfast of Champions." Producers of the show are making last-ditch efforts to sell "Angel," a darkly amusing fantasy/action epic about the journey for redemption of a once-evil vampire cursed with a soul, to UPN or another willing network.

This has honestly got to be the best episode of Angel I've ever seen. Wes shooting the guy in the knee. Gunn beating the shit out of himself. Lorne hitting Eve. Angel and Spike actually working together. I got goosebumps during the scene in the lobby after they first saw Fred.

WHY is the WB cancelling this show again? Do they have their heads completely up their asses?

Oh my god.

:( That was THE greatest episode of Angel I've ever seen. They can't cancel Angel...I hope someone at the WB was paying attention tonight, because if they can produce episodes like that, they'd better think twice about replacing it with reruns.

Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof gave the best performances of their careers. It was absolutely heartwrenching to watch them. The comradery between Angel and Spike was excellent. The scene in the W&H lobby gave me goosebumps. Gunn...Knox...Lorne...everyone was just fantastic. Joss, you've outdone yourself.

Wow. That was tremendous. Amy and Alexis were incredible. This stuff has already been mentioned, but Wes shooting that dude, Gunn/Gunn, Lorne owning Eve, the Spike and Angel stuff, all awesome. Gunn finding out he was the one who signed off on the sarcophagus getting imported was great, as well.

Joss delivering the greatness, again.

1. Wesley shooting out the guys kneecap was so fucking boss. SO BOSS. It's fucking Bruce Lee Big Boss. And what happens when Wes finds out that Knox, Gunn and Angel are involved? WHAT THEN!?!??!?!?! OOOOOOOOOOH LORDY!!!!!!!!

2. This episode, top to bottom, was fucking HOT. Off the charts hot. HOT!!!!!!!! FUCK, there needs to be a new word invented to describe the level of absolute hotness this episode had. Everything worked, everyfuckingthing. FUCK YEAH! WHOOOOOOOO! Thats why I watch television! Thats why everything fucking else on today can't touch. FUCK THE FROG! Man, throughout the whole show I was like "shit" "fuck" "OH DADDY" "THIS IS AWSOME!" WHO WAS I TALKING TO??! I DON'T KNOW! BUT I STILL SAID IT!!!

3. The arguing and the Caveman/Astronaut thing had me laughing for a solid minute. No exagerration, fuck that was some of the funniest shit I have ever fucking heard. I knew it would be over nothing but shit, that's really nothing! And I loved how Wes got into it and Fred and Lorne did too. Fucking brilliant.

4. Man, shit, Gunn fucking owns. Owns shit. Gunn fucking owns shit. Season 5 is Gunn. Gunn is Season 5. To know Gunn is to love Gunn, to love Season 5 is to know and love Gunn. The scene with the Conduit, the scene with Knox. Listening to show tunes and then merging it into rap to protect his rep was fucking brilliant. Him saying he and Fred got back together again even had ME! AND I READ THE FUCKING SPOILERS! AM I AN IDIOT? I DUNNO! I STILL WAS FOOLED! MY GAWD THE CAPS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS! LET'S THROW IN A TIDLE~!!~!~!~!!!~!

5. Knox's "oops" and grin was fucking priceless. Absolutely fucking priceless. That totally redeemed him. Holden rocked. Tracy rocked. Knox ROCKED! Give that man a hooker cause he deserves to get laid! BOOYAH GRANDPA!~

6. Fred and Wes, shit, I was watching that and was thinking "eh, this isn't really effecting me." and then near the end I was like "Shit BOY, are you gonna tear up?! YOU WANNA BOTTLE?!" Fuck that's some good shit right there. Mostly due to EMOTIONAL Wes, because his relationship with Fred was years in the making and after he finally gets her she dies on him.

7. Spike and Angel rule~! That's all I really have to say. The no lie guy (was he from something else? Cause I sure as fuck don't remember him. Did Angel do a crossover with DUNE?) was cool, if not irrelevant. That whole tomb was neato. Shit, I'm running out of adjectives to describe how fucking awesome this episode was. Fuck it. If saying "fucking awesome" a hundred times doesn't clue you in that this was fucking awesome, then you fucking suck! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get mad... this is about love. Love for Angel. Love for God and Love... otherwise known as Joss FUCKING Whedon. FUCK THE WB! FUCK THE FROG! WHY MUST YOU TAKE THIS AWAY!?!?!??!

8. Lorne finally gets his scene and he fucking nearly steals the motherfucking show with it! I liked how he threw in the Fred and Green thing, cause that really showed how Fred was such a nice girl and how everyone was fighting for her. It really was effective. They all had their reasons, and it all was believable. I love that shit down. I love that shit down hard.

9. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! It was so good, SO GOOD. SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD!!!! I read the spoilers, saw what was coming, really liked what I saw, but I didn't think it would be THIS good. ShiT, it gets even better too! This is going to be a very memorable season.

10. The only doubt I have is Fred as Illyra. I dunno if she can totally pull it off. But fuck it, with episodes like this they could have a motherfucking sock puppet as the villain and it'd still come off as gold.

I love not reading spoilers.

I had no idea ANY of this was coming and I'm absolutely enchanted. Now I actually deeply care about this show getting cancelled.

I liked the slight twitch in Angel's glare when they learned that it was an Old One, birthing from a body...again.

Have they been planning to have Evil Knox from the outset? I dunno, this episode just blew me away in every facet. The world it created - the Hole in the World especially - shows that team Mutant Enemy is still surpassing themselves creatively. These are the best sci-fi ideas I've seen in forever and now I'm really depressed it's ending.

::whimper:: Come back to us, Fred.

I thought Jasmine was a Power that be that turned bad.

Dude, it's Jonathon Woodward - when HAVEN'T they turned him evil ;) ?

I dunno, this episode just blew me away in every facet.

Seriously, my mind exploded when I heard the Astronaut/Caveman thing. My avatar, it was exactly like that. Blood pouring out of every oriface. I'm covered in it right now and couldn't be happier. Me typing here, it's just an echo of my formerself. I have died and gone to heaven and God truly is Joss Whedon.

I LOOOOOOOOOOVED that hole in the world thing, I was expecting Spike to spit down it. Dude, I've read the spoilers, and you're going to be A LOT sadder, trust me. This thing goes deep.

Oh, and also? Not mentioned much yet, but Sad Eve was wondrous. There's a lot more charm to a character who can seem so vulnerable and lonely.

I thought she was a shitty villain, but knowing that she actually seemed to be in love with Lindsey adds miles more of dimension. Joss has still got it, to no one's surprise.

I'm going to say this once. I believe that for a word to mean something you should only use it sparingly.

Fuck the WB.

How many good series, how many promising concepts, how many great ideas have been consumed by the firely hellhole that is corporate thinking? I know Angel doesn't appeal to a wide audience. I know it's ratings are not what they used to be. And I know Angel isn't the best show to be on tv. But you know what? I don't care. I would rather see something unique and interesting than the hundred other versions of cookie-cutter crap the networks force-feed us on tv. And this just doesn't apply to Angel, either. Comedies, dramas, anything and everything that looks promising seems to be fair game for tv execs who think, "You know what? I think we need to bring back Dark Shadows. That forgotten 1970's series will surely appeal to our 17-25 demographic!" Not to mention they used Angel to get more viewers for Smallville. That isn't against Smallville, but do you really think syphering viewers from Angel will make them forget about it?

Yeesh. Anyway, tonight's episode was the best one I've seen this season in terms of drama. I haven't been watching Angel for a long time, but from what I have watched the cast has really put a lot into their characters, and it shows.

FUCK ALL OF YOU BECAUSE I RECORDED THE FUCKIN EPISODE BITCHES!!!!!!!

And, this is barn-fuckin non, the best episode of Angel ever. It passed "Apocolypse Nowish" and that had THE BEAST and the best fight in TV history. I walked into my suite after the episode, and put the tape in front of my friend Adrian. I said, "Okay, tomorrow you will watch this episode. You and Bob, will smoke a bowl, light a cig and turn on the episode. You will watch it, be in fuckin aww, then report to me tomorrow about it. If you don't like the episode, I will stab you in the neck with a pencil. I swear to GoD."

1. I CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH, this episode was FUCKIN AWESOME!!! What can't you like about it? Tell me, find ONE FUCKIN THING that you didn't like about it. I will argue with you all day, and I will win because this episode was FUCKIN AWESOME!!!

2. The teaser with Fred and her family, was GOLD. It reminded us what Fred was like, and what she had become. THEN, we get Angel walking away with a sword in him. He was just walking away like it was no big deal, and it happens all the time. FUCKIN GOLD I TELL YA!!!!

3. Cavemen vs Astronauts? FUCKIN GOLD!! I was laughin sooooooo hard, and walked into my suite to tell everyone about it. They didn't laugh that hard, but I told them FUCK OFF BITCHES it was FUCKIN GOLD!!!!

4. Wes and Fred? WHAT A FUCKIN COUPLE!!!! Why, oh why, do you tease us Joss? They have been building it up for 2 YEARS, and we get 2 FUCKIN episodes of them together. BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

5. Spike and Angel as a team, best thing ever. Spike coming over to Angel made me a little scared, BUT JOSS IS A FUCKIN GOD and he knows how to make good TV. Those two together was FUCKIN AWESOME, nuff said.

6. LORNE? Lorne as a badass? WHERE DA FUCK DID THIS COME FROM? It doesn't matter because IT WAS FUCKIN GREAT. I have never seen Lorne like this, but when you fuck with his Fred, "I'll kill you before these two can."

7. Two words: Winifred Burkle. I never thought about this before, but Fred is the ONLY FUCKIN ONE in Buffyverse history that everyone loves.

8. I was sort of spoiled with this, but Gunn being the one who helped Fred become Evil, FUCKIN GOLD!!!! I miss the old Gunn, but maybe with him being a sort of bad guy, we can get the old Gunn back.

9. Knox? Where in the BLUE FUCKIN HELL, did this come from? "IT" my face was wide open, and that smirk he gave was FUCKIN GOLD!!!!!!! I PRAY TO THE FUCKIN GOD JOSS, that he didn't die from Gunn beatin him like that.

10. That guy who was ahead of the House of Dead, or w/e it was called, was the man. He is the ONLY FUCKIN GUY who made Spike shut-up, well at first atleast. I was trying to think of the name of the episode, then "There is A WHOLE IN THIS WORLD" and I was like "OHH FUCKIN YA, JOSS IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I love it, I love it, I FUCKIN LOVE IT!!!!!

BEST FUCKIN EPISODE EVER!!!!!!!!!! This episode competes with "The Wish," "Passion," and "Out of Gas" as anything that Joss put his hands on. I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I FUCKIN LOVE IT!!! FUCK everything about the WB.

Who will boycott the WB with me next year?

I'm boycotting. Only because I plan on getting Smallville on DVD, hardly watch it before Angel now, and come next year it will be the only show on the network that I would watch. Fuck 'em.

oh, and here is a link to a- I'm not sure what it is. A fan went to the Wolfram and Heart Annual Revue charity thing, and gave a full report, including comments on the Firefly movie, how Angel wa canceled, and how it won't/can't be saved now. A good read.

Some of you people have issues, seriously.

It was a good episode - one of the best of a rather mediocre season, but best episode of the show ever? Best episode of TV ever?!?! Everone please just calm down and start talking reasonably.

I liked tonight's show, but at the same time, I wish they had started this storyline at the beginning of the season instead of treading in the water for so many weeks.

I'm glad they mentioned "the Old Ones." It's a nice bit of continuity from the first season of "Buffy." It's a small thing, but sometimes those are what count. It's kinda weird since they started replaying the first season of "Buffy" today.
