Guest wrestlingbs Report post Posted September 23, 2003 In case you watched 10% of Raw tonight, you probably noticed the WWE heavily sucking up to the wounded troops returning to Iraq. This was especially evident in the tag match when the Dudleys came down to great the troops. Now, I think it was great for the WWE to praise the troops. Even though I don't agree with the situation in Iraq, I know these guys still put their lives on the line for this country, and that's reason enough to praise them. I think the soldiers deserved front row seats, meating with the superstars, and recognition. However, did anyone else think that the WWE was exploiting them? For months now the WWE has used the Iraq war to draw heat on both sides of the issue. And then they focus on the soldiers all night and give them little segments on tv. Now if they were a news show I could understand, but Raw is an entertainment program, and it looked like they were just using those men to draw in viewers. What do you think? And on a side note, who here thinks the Dudleys look more stale by doing their "France sucks, USA is a-ok" shtick every match?
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 At least none of them got their prostetics used as weapons. THAT would have been definite exploitation.
Guest thrall585 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 (edited) They are partisan for an unrelated WWE cause that about half the country doesn't agree with. Pretty stupid. And not only that, they are giving free business to these troops. Dumb WWE! Edited September 23, 2003 by thrall585
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 WWE shouldn't advertise the troops because about half the country doesn't agree what they are doing. They don't gain or lose anything, they just look partisan. They're beginning the "Smackdown your Vote" thing. Remember, Vince votes Republican. He wants you too as well. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 Oh yeah, and the combination of the cheerleaders and the troops in the front rows meant that place must have sold like SHIT compared to most Raws.

Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 heh would we put it past the WWE to let that one Vet who had a hook do a run in during a Zack Gowen match and just CLAW his face up with the Hook and then Vince comes over and pins Zack..
Open the Muggy Gate 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 I think it was a nice touch for the WWE to do that for the wounded soldiers. Oh by the way... Trivia, where did you find that picture of HHH?? That is awesome!!
Guest nikowwf Report post Posted September 23, 2003 I hardly see how letting wounded soldiers say hi to their families is offensive, whether you agree with the war or not. are we that sensitive now? niko
Guest thrall585 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 It is offensive because about half the people do not agree with their cause of getting injured, and they are pushing it down their throats.

jester 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 The whole thing just felt desperate to me. I could picture a roundtable of WWE execs talking before the show: "Well, what else are we going to do with the time? Put on quality wrestling?"

Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 The best part of it all was the troop who had his speech on right before the Mark Henry match. You could definitely tell that he wasn't a wrestling fan at all, because when Mark Henry comes out, he looks bored as hell and begins to do a tiny golf clap for him.
Guest thrall585 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 Not because he is bored as hell, because that is everyone, but because he gives a golf clap thinking Henry is a good guy.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2003 Nobody is buying the La Resistence crap and nobody is giving cheap heat for this angle that will never die. I sure as hell do not want to see Sgt. Slaughter & Dudley Boys vs La Resistence, Conway, OVW jobber. Can somebody else please challenge for the tag titles?
Guest JMA Report post Posted September 23, 2003 I'd say it's both good and bad. On one hand, the troops deserve to be reconized. On the other hand, Vince is not above exploiting people and events. Just look at how he made Sgt. Slaughter an Iraqi Sympathizer. I'm surprised the many heels fed to him every once in a while don't call him a "traitor." Vince is the kind of guy who believes his beliefs are infallible.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Report post Posted September 23, 2003 As an Englishman who will be watching RAW this Friday, I think its a waste of time and hope its all edited. Oh that must suck...you don't agree with the war, so the people who got injured in the war get nothing? it offends you that the WWE gave them an oppurtunity to say a little something, send a message to their families or whatever? fuck it, i dont get some people sometimes, maybe its cause im part of a army family. as a sidenote, i hated the la resitance angle. I agree with the war (bad assumption there, ever heard of objective arguing?), it just makes no sense that they are pushing down the war down people's throats, when half of them don't agree with it. The people who got injured in the war should get nothing from the general public because half the people do not agree with the war. From a business view, WWE should not be showing anything about the war, but since it is Vince's show, he can do whatever he wants.

The people who got injured in the war should get nothing from the general public because half the people do not agree with the war... The hell? Kiss my ass! We aren't responsible for the president's foreign policy; if some soldiers are injured in combat, whether some citizens agree with the war or not, they should at least have some compassion/appreciation for the men and women who go into the line of fire. Perhaps I was in the head when they were showing footage of the war, or when the commentators were making overt comments on the political policy, but I didn't see or hear anything like that. If the WWE wants to show a little appreciation for servicemembers that went over there, and give them a chance to send a shout out, there isn't anything wrong with that, and fuck you for saying otherwise! Guest Coffey Report post Posted September 23, 2003 (edited) Raw sucks up to our troops, Good or bad? It was terrible. It made me feel bad to be watching the show. As silly as professional wrestling is perceived to be, watching them do something like that just makes them look more ludacris is my eyes. It was downright disappointing. Basically, I think the wounded troops should be above Raw. That's what I'm trying to say.... Edited September 23, 2003 by Mr. Jag0

Guest The Decadent Slacker Report post Posted September 23, 2003 I don't agree with the whole rationale for the war. I do think troops should get a forum to talk to their families, friends & fellow troops. I do not want said forum on pro wrestling. It makes the country look bad when our troops (& moreso Americans in general) boo a fucking French wrestling tag team just because they're supposed to be French. WTF is the point? They didn't want to join us in a questionable at best-war mongering at worst invasion of another country? That's bullshit. THe whole angle is retarded, & the fact people (marks as they may be) buy it is just fucking disheartening. I do find it funny that Vince is a good conservative republican, yet books his future son-in-law to fuck a corpse, though.
