Blech. Benson and Hedges is the GPC for rich people. Try an American Spirit. Now THAT's tobacco.

Hogwash. I've been smoking since I was wee. I know tobaccer when I'm smoking it. Just because your taste buds can't differentiate between tar and mint...

Honestly, I really can't taste any tobacco whatsoever in a menthol cigarette, and it bugs me. I don't mind mint in small quantities but I don't want it to be filling my lungs all frickin' day. I like tobacco I can taste.

Edit: besides, last I saw of anything you'd posted on the topic, you're smoking Marlboro Filter 100's. Don't even get me STARTED on those overpriced phallic ammonia-soaked pencil shavings. Reds are for suckers.

Still am. Go ahead and start on 'em; I'm getting disenchanted. I liked them a lot at first but now they aren't really doing anything for me. I can go through five in fifteen minutes and I still feel vaguely dissatisfied.

That's because Phillip Morris uses more or less the same type of leaf, only with different degrees of flavoring, filler, actual leaf quality, etc, for all their brands. That's not really a huge sin or anything, just that you're buying more or less the same leaf as is availible in a Basic, or GPC, which is PM's cheap brand. They come in the exact same varieties as Marlboro (save promotional deals like the Midget Menthols and shit) and cost comparably less, but taste pretty much like crap. The more you smoke GPC's or Basics, and then Marlboros, the less of a difference you'll notice, really.

Benson and Hedges are the GPC's for rich people, because they're cheaper than your Camels, Marb's, etc..only they come in this fancy pack, and are only available in 100's. They're meant solely for white-collar ladies who want to smoke something dainty and sophisticated sounding without breaking the bank. It surprises me none that you own a pack.

American Spirits are 100% tobacco leaf with none of the lousy shit from the plant that Winston puts in their "100% tobacco, no filler, no bull" cigarettes (ack). They use quality shit, which may or may not be organically grown, even. They come in as many, if not more varieties as Marlboro, have a very, VERY rich slow burning smoke, a pleasant bitterness, and they'll kick you in the dick, nicotine-wise. Downside: they're tricky to find in some places (although the internet and mail order all but destroy this problem), they're a bit more pricey that the normal name brands (usually around 4 bucks a pack, here) but they're really worth it if you don't mind paying a little more for your health problems. I smoke them sporadically.

Question, back in my days of working at convience stores I had a customer tell me that if you smoked any sort of light or ultra-light cig with your finger on the filter it was like smoking a red b/c the only difference between regular, lights, ultra-lights so on is a more porous filter.

You're kind of right. Lights and Ultra Lights DO in fact have a more porous filter which adds more air to each drag, thus making it taste ligher. It's still more or less the same amount of nictoine and tar, depending on how you smoke. The numbers you can find from the Surgeon General, The Tobacco Companies, etc, are all determined by a "smoking machine" which doesn't smoke like any kind of human being does.

Point being, smoking is bad for you no matter what brand you smoke, but with a light or ultra light, you're getting (generally) less in your lungs with each drag. This might cause you to take more puffs, or smoke more cigarettes. Your body's going to want the same amount of nicotine no matter what, which plays a part in the psychological satisfaction of smoking.

That made me laugh out loud. Thanks. :) I started smoking them first, actually, because a friend of mine said they'd be the easiest to start out with. I thought she was putting me on at first because even the "deluxe ultra lights" felt incredibly harsh. Now, many years later, they taste like air to me.

American Spirits are 100% tobacco leaf...

Sounds great, but

and they'll kick you in the dick, nicotine-wise.

just how would that work? ;)

Also, question: this site lists ultra lights, lights, mediums, regulars, non-filters, menthols, and something called "periques" under the American Spirits category. Now I know I'll probably be getting regulars, but what's a "perique?" And do any of these varieties come in 100s? Those don't seem to be available from that site, and I like 100s.

Ah, the cruel Perique. Perique is a brutally strong and spicy type of tobacco that grows only in the deep murky south, is cured until black, and tightly rolled into very thin cigarillos, or most often blended with other leafs. This is what Snake Blissken smoked in the Escape from the post-apocalyptic urban prison-city movies.

I can't remember ever seeing them in 100's, honestly. You'll have to overcompensate in other ways. Get one of those silent film star sterling silver cigarette holder bastards.

I generally smoke either Camel Lights or American Spirit Lights...also I smoke irregularly usually when I'm under a lot of stress or I'm with friends or co-workers that smoke (I give into peer pressure, yeah fuck off ;)). Those American Spirits are like mini-cigars they're so strong...one of those is good enough to keep me feeling satisfied for the whole day (I barely smoke more than one cig a day...I'm a lightweight)

In my opinion, there's a world of difference between GPC's and plain old Marlboros. Although I started out with reds, I don't care much for Marlboros anymore since Newports are far superior. However, I don't mind them. GPC's, on the other hand, are disgusting. I can't comment on regulars, but my mom smokes GPC lights and they taste like rancid ass.

I have been switching back and fourth with Marb Lights and Marb Mediums. It just depends what I am in the mood for.

Of course I always bum menthols from people. I got called a closet menthol man the other day.

I'm a big fan of John Carpernter's Escape movies, and after reading this post, having just watched Escape from L.A. once again where the film ends with Snake lighting up an American Spirit, I have come to the conclusion that I need to try some of those.

Newports are great, but I might as well add a little variety. Besides, Newports aren't the super strong uber cigarettes that most of the pussies I know make them out to be. I've only smoked for, well, not even a year, and 75% of long time smokers I know find Newports to be "too strong". Of course, the other 25% smoke them 24/7, but the majorit are still pussies. What was my original point again?

That you need to get a pack of Periques, I think. I've had Perique before, but not that brand in particular.

It's a pretty spicy leaf. It'd be good in moderation or as a blend, but I wouldn't smoke it straight on a regular basis.

Glad to see this thread hasn't died.

Bought a pack of (English) American Spirits the other day after enjoying them while I was in the US last year. Severely disapointing, the Brit ones contained half the tar and nicotine and tasted like smoking air. Especially after their rich, satisfying to smoke American counterparts.

Never managed to find any Camel Exotics whilst there (and this annoyance was further compounded by adverts for a limited edition 'New Year Spirit' flavour). Wish I'd managed to grab a pack of these too as I love to try the different flavours.

That New Year's flavor smelled better than it tasted. I think those seasonal flavors are pretty hastily thrown together. The Mardi Gras one that just came out tastes like what an old jelly jar smells like. No doubt they'll have a St. Paddy's day flavor which will be about as bad.

Hint of Guiness could be fun :P Or they could just colour the paper green.

I made another thread about these when they hit stores. They're short, incredibly strong menthols. The Greens taste like a Newport Ice used to taste, and the Blue ones are a whole lot more mellow, but don't have that "Ackkkkk" fiberglassy menthol kick the greens have. It's still menthol, though. They're good stuff. 6.8/10, if I had to assign some kind of rating to them.

I prefer Marlboro Menthol Milds. For me, they are just right. I used to be a Newport guy and sometimes when that's the only kind available in a machine when I need a smoke, I'll get it. However, they are a bit too harsh after awhile. The Marlboro Menthol Mild is just the right blend of menthol and tobacco for me.

I'm pretty sure the new marlboros don't have a name. Just ask for the New Marlboros, and specify a color. They're a shiny pack, pretty hard to miss if they're on the shelf.

I've only tried Djarums but they were a pretty good / easy smoke. Depends what your looking for really, Cloves seem to be very marmite-esque in that people either really like them or can't stand them.

When I wanted a proper smoke though Djarums were unsatisfying - found myself smoking a normal cigarette afterwards. Don't know if thats a similar trait across all cloves or just that brand.

EDIT: Everything2 tells me that Djarum Specials are the sweeter of the brands - so if thats what you're looking for it sounds like a good tip.

I've had American Spirits before, and I wasn't terribly impressed. Reminded me of a Marlboro Light, but with a more subtle taste. Definitely didn't find it to be as strong as everyone here is making them out to be. Benson & Hedges, had them, complete waste of time. Camel Exotics: not too bad, since the Turkish Jade is my brand, but ultimately just a novelty that wears off kinda quickly.

But I needed something to smoke when listening to the Cure!

Ok then, give me a suggestion for some tobacco product that will hurt when being inhaled so I can claim it as a feat (fetus) of strength.

The nastiest hit EVER: smoking tobacco out of a bong made for weed. That is the sickest, stiffest hit of nicotine you could ever hope to experience.

Oh, and Camel Unfiltereds have a pretty savage kick, too.

Also, while we're on the subject of pussy tobacco:

I was at a party the other night and people were smoking APRICOT tobacco out of a hooka. It was the gayest.
