cbacon 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 For my Analysis of Popular Culture class I have chose to do my essay on wrestling. The proposal is due tomorrow, and I was wondering if there's anything of note I should add. Keeping in mind , the focus is wrestling from a semiotic/popular culture perspective, therefore things like the Montreal Screwjob need not be discussed. Essay Proposal For my essay I will analyse one of the largest forms of popular culture for over 100 years. That being Professional Wrestling, it’s roots, it’s high’s , it’s low’s and where it stands today. There is much that can be discussed about Professional Wrestling from a semiotic perspective. For convenience, I shall outline the most famous and infamous era’s, where Professional Wrestling had it’s greatest impact on popular culture. Such topics to discuss include: • The 80’s Boom: Wrestling goes mainstream, Hulk-A-Mania, WrestleMania, Rock’N’Wrestling, Celebrities • The 90’s Boom: The Monday Night Wars, nWo, ECW, The Attitude Era • Crossover Stars: The Rock in Hollywood , Mike Tyson, The David Arquette fiasco • Wrestling Today: The current state of Wrestling, The Internet, Smarks vs. Marks, Puroresu, TNA
Ace309 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 Check your grammar, don't capitalize "professional wrestling" just for the hell of it, and remember that plurals don't take apostrophes. I'm not sure a discussion on puro fits the theme of the paper, if only because Japanese wrestling HASN'T really had an impact on pop culture. If the Montreal Screwjob isn't deemed appropriate, something even more esoteric probably isn't appropriate either.

In terms of Puro, I was thinking of using it as an example of an alternative
Guest Doyo Report post Posted September 26, 2003 You don't have to worry about this because your teacher will probably not know about it, but wrestling had great impacts on popular culture long before the 80s. For just one example, here are some excerpts from a bio on Gorgeous George which can be found at http://www.rf-multimedia.com/bios/GorgeousGeorge.html "Indeed, during his heyday (which began in the late 1940's and lasted through to the early 1960's) a more famous or controversial entertainment figure could not be found. It has been said that during his prime, George was even more well known than the President.... In a very real sense, Gorgeous George single-handedly established the unproven new technology of television as a viable, entertaining new medium that could reach literally millions homes all across the country. Pro wrestling was TV's first real "hit" with the public -- the first programs that ever drew any real numbers for the new technology, and Gorgeous George was was directly responsible for all of the commotion. It was a turning point for Wagner, wrestling, and the country itself. It is not an overstatement to say that Gorgeous George was probably responsible for selling more television sets in the early days of TV than any other factor." Steviekick 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 Make sure you can find ways to acknowledge wrestling's impact before the 80s, as it did especially with early television programming.
