What the hell happened to solos?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, but the thing was that Agent claimed that Metallica helped spawn nu-metal, due to many nu-metal bands maning them as influences. Laz countered by saying that everyone lists Sabbath as an influence, so it was just a generational thing.

I was just pointing out - Metallica being listed as an influence by many nu-metal bands is not the same as Sabbath being listed as an influence by virtually every metal band ever.

There's a difference in listing a band as an influence, and having them actually be one.

Maybe the 80's bands copped their edge from Sabbath's balls, but the music isn't even remotely similar. Besides, Sabbath influenced everyone, including themselves. That's like saying The Beatles are responsible for Nu Metal, since they were one of Sabbath's (or at least Ozzy's) biggest influences.

Nu Metal DOES bare resemblance to Metallica, even if indirectly through bands like Korn. Want an example? St. Anger.

Also, there isn't a generation gap like there is with Nu Metal/Sabbath, and Hair Bands/Sabbath. Evil ugly Disco hit in the late 70's, when the band was starting to fall apart. Ozzy was always wasted, Iommi was frustrated, and Geezer was out of his mind, almost. They disbanded right around 79, which was a few years prior to the aquanet scene. The distortion pedals might've said Black Sabbath, but the attitude and decadence is ALL disco, pop, etc.

Metallica's still making music, and touring along side all these terrible, awful bands that idolize them. *Points finger*

Just to add my lousy two cents....

Someone's influence doesn't always resemble their work. Hell, Metallica has often said Aerosmith was a big influence on them but you wouldn't know that by listening to Metallica.

I don't think influence of bands have anything to do with it. I think it has to do more with record labels telling bands exactly how they are going to make music in order to get the MASS AMOUNT of buys. As much as we hate nu-metal bands. I am sure there are some guitarists in those bands that are talented and play solos at home or on tour buses, but when they sign a contract to make nu-metal, they have to abide by the piece of shit contract.

Seriously though, I still feel solos have their place in guitar rock, and plenty of hardrock and metal bands still do them... you just won't be hearing those songs on the radio

Funny how your example of a Metallica album that can be directly linked to a nu-metal album is the album Metallica put out to cash in on the nu-metal craze, eh? That would be like saying grunge bands have a direct link to Motley Crue because the Crue put out a grungier album in Generation Swine.

60's bands, such as The MC5 and Jimi Hendrix Experience, listed blues and jazz musicians primarily, as well as Elvis Presley.

70's bands listed The Beatles, Elvis, and many 60's bands.

80's bands listed Elvis, The Beatles, and many 70's bands.

90's bands listed Elvis, The Beatles, many 60's bands, and a few 70's and 80's bands.

It's a generational thing. The preceding eras of music influence the following eras. Elvis begat The Beatles, The Beatles begat Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath begat metal, and metal begat hair metal, hair metal begat Grunge (as a "fuck you" to hair metal), and grunge/hair metal begat nu-metal.

As for Metal Maniac's comments...

You forget that there were PLENTY of bands before 1980 that bands from 1980 and on could have listened to for inspiration, especially hair bands. New York Dolls, Ramones, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The MC5, and The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

As for saying Metallica is to blame because that's the particular 80's metal band that the nu-metallers point out, I want to say that Metallica was one of the only 80's underground metal acts to break through to the mainstream without having to use aquanet and excessive amounts of makeup and spandex. So it definitely makes sense for newer bands to point to a band that (**GASP!**) broke into the mainstream when they were forming their own opinions on music as a major influence. Much like how, if I were to start a band, and that band were to become big, I would list Shadows Fall as a huge influence (as it is QUITE obvious they are going to become big).

I think it also has to do with a each new generation of youth wanting their own identity, and right now the style of music on mainstream radio is what the mass population feels is the best way to express themselves....aww so misguided.
