Buffy Thread Enters Classics?

Recommended Posts

I don't think I could watch more than two complete episodes. The whole show ran together like the rinsewater from a gradeschool watercolor art project. I couldn't pick out one identifiable plot point, or thing I gave a shit about.

The tall creepy fuckers that stole everyone's voices were pretty tight though. I figured that was a one episode type of creature though, since I never saw them anywhere else.

Yeah, but the seasons basically ran like a 22 hour movie. If you jumped into the middle of a season nothing would make sense.

Its like trying to watch hour 17 of 24 without seeing anything before that. I might be alright at best, but if you saw it all, you would enjoy it more.

FX is what got me into the show with their two-a-day schedule and made it easier to follow. HOnestly though, alot of people will never get it and some will automatically think it is incredible. I personally never like vampire stories and then I ended up loving this show. Never like space shows and I really liked Firefly. Joss Whedon is just a plain incredible writer and some will appreciate his work and others won't.

What the hell is the show about? Is she out there to kill vampires, or is it just the life of Buffy, who happens to kill vampires? From what I've gathered, it's the latter, which makes me completely lose interest.

Basically it is the life of Buffy and her friends/family/etc. And she happens to kill vampires and other creatures. And she just happens to live on the mouth of hell which allows for all the CRAZY~! stuff to happen. Most of the time the Vampires would just be there for the first shot of the show and that would be it for them. The Beast of the week or Big Bad(the main villian for the season) would be the usual focus of the show.

People that aren't really into the mythos would enjoy seasons 5-7 more than the begaining. It is a more adult oriented show. ANd how can you hate a show that was voted "Worst show for families" due to its sexuality and violence for 3 years running. HOW?

Its the writing and the acting ability of the cast that makes it amazing. Honestly, I don't think this concept could be pulled off with another cast. But when I watch the"Buffy" rip-offs like Dark Angel, Smallville(if you really think about it, it is), and Charmed, I really appreciate the good writing and acting because one or the other (or in Charmed's case, both) really suck about those shows. Alias is the Buffy Rip off that is the exception to the rule though.

Basically it is a genre show that doesn't really go by the rules of the genre and I suck at explaining it. Where the fuck it Rudo when you need him.

Vampires is the underlying theme, but the show itself is mostly about life and surviving it. It's the contrast of death and life.

EDIT: How is Alias a Buffy rip off??? Come now you're just throwing names out.

Yes you have to watch a whole season.

The first three seasons were great, but I didn't care for the last few seasons as much. Season's 5 and 6 had too many stand alone episodes, and the final season 7 just didn't seem to be written as well as other seasons were and was lacking because of it.

Also if you want to talk about Buffy, don't do it with the fanatics. Like any fanboy they take it too serious to pyschotic levels at times.

Not sure how you think Season 5 had more stand alones than season 1 or 2. Season 2 had way too many stand alones for my taste.

you ARE kidding right. Are you telling me you see no similarity between the concepts? Yes, Buffy would fall under Sci-fi, and Alias wouldn't (although some of the storylines are less believeable than vampires...I still love it though) they are both cut from the same cloth.

It's all about familiarity. It's a character driven show, so you have to know and like the characters and at least tolerate Sarah Michelle Gellar. There is a wide variety of people on the show, so it shouldn't be hard to find someone to grab a hold of and root for. Xander, Andrew, Anya, Spike, Giles are my favourite characters mainly because of their comedic value. Each of them is funny in their own way (and the comedy in Buffy rivals any sitcom in the past 10 years). Spike in particular is a riot. He's an evil british vampire who likes watching passions and eating onion blossoms... Jesus Christ that's brilliant.

I'll use a personal example. I don't consider myself a Trekkie, but I like Star Trek shows. However, that wasn't always the case. I didn't like The Next Generation, or Deep Space 9, or Voyager when they first came out, or even in their first couple of seasons. Of course, that changed (I still can't watch the "classic" series, or Enterprise).

With TNG it came from a clever plot where they were caught in a time loop - these kinds of storylines Star Trek excells in - and it was a pretty light and fluffy episode that allowed for the characters to have fun.

With DS9 it came around the 5th season when a buddy of mine came over and we were flippin through the channels and stumbled on the show. It was when they were going to war and it was part of a big arch - after watching a bit of it I got hooked on the storyline and wanted to watch more... so I did. The more familiar I became with the characters the greater I enjoyed the show.

Voyager I got into the same way, I saw part 1 of a 2 parter and wanted to know what would happen next. Got attached to the characters and got to know it better through re-runs.

I got into Buffy when it started, having actually liked the Movie-version. It didn't hurt that SMG was incredibly hot at the time. Most of my friends watched it too, but stopped watching after Season 3 - I would guess that they couldn't identify with the College life so they lost interested... it didn't help that Season 4 stunk (for the most part). Season 5 brought me back (I never really left, just had Hockey games on Tues night and tended to miss a few eps.) Season 5 had them out of college and featured a loooong story-arc and fully developed main characters... which made for very easy watchin.

The similarity between Buffy and Trek is that they aren't afraid to have "fun" with the characters - and once you get to know and like the characters, you will have fun too. The big hurdle for both shows is the "sci-fi" barrier - when, really, it's not about any of that at all. It's just a context. It's a device. And the great thing about that is in their respective universes, they can do anything. They are not limited to the "normal world".

Plus you have to suspend your disbelief. If you don't like "shows like that" and only stick to ER and Seinfeld, then there's probably little I can do to sway you. In this world Vampires exist, this 5'3 girl has the power of 10 men, and in-the-end they always win... even against Gods.... and yes, there are Gods in this show.

Eh, that's a pretty good explanation, I'd suppose. I spontaneously get ADD whenever the TV is on though, and television shows that try to be more than episodic trainwrecks don't generally interest me at all. I watch sports, and shows about tanks and diseases on the History channel. I was just curious as to why people liked Buffy so much.

Edit: rewording.

I'm generally not like that. I can sit through long movies, anything like that without trouble, but I just completely lose interest in TV. I think it's the medium.

IMO, the bigger question should be why do we have a "Classic" threads folder?

Seriously, who gives a shit if a topic started about one thing turned into something funny. I know I don't go back and read about shit from the past. I know if a Newbie were to go there and attempt to read half the content on some of these so called classic threads, they'd wonder if this was a board for retards. I think if anything, the Buffy thread at least has coherent discussion (most of it) that is long and spans a long time about a subject. Even still, why keep posts from 6 months or later? Even if a thread turned funny to you, I don't see the reason for keeping a folder about crap that seemed funny to a limited number of people.

There was an argument that the Buffy thread was a circle jerk for 10-12 posters. Well, a lot of the topics in "classics" folder are a bunch of nonsense from 10-25 different posters. So what? It's a waste of bandwidth if you ask me. If you really need to hold on to the memory of the gnome thread really badly, you need help.

Me personally I don't even turn the TV on unless I know what I'm going to watch before hand.

I'm the exact opposite. I'll flip it on for a few, give it one or two cycles through the channels, watch something that catches my eye for ten or twenty minutes, then I'm usually sick of it.

I used to be like that and sometimes if I'm really bored I'll do that. But for the most part I hardly watch TV except for the few shows I watch on a regular basis.

I basically had a remote that had hald dead batteries and just would stop working sometimes so I would watch what was ever on the screen. I started watching Friends, The Practice, Last Comic Standing, Will and Grace, Scrubs, and various other shows due to this method. I don't want to share the crap I have seen through it also.

So in other words, I have to force myself to stay on one channel.

Why don't you just read a book or something?

Reading kills my artistic creativity.

Yeah, I know it sounds stupid, but everytime I get into a book, I get a creative block, and I hate that so I only read if I have to or if I know I'm not going to do anything creative for a while.

Why don't you just watch porn or something?

Only when I am in the good mood for a comedy. Yes, porn has become comedy with sex to me now.

A defintion of classic:

a. Belonging to the highest rank or class.

b. Serving as the established model or standard: a classic example of colonial architecture.

c. Having lasting significance or worth; enduring.

The Buffy thread fits all three of those defintions, well maybe not the first one so much. It was one of the few topics on this board that stayed on topic, and it did it for 141 pages. I'd say that is a pretty impressive amount of time.

Most people who crap on the show have never really seen it before. I used to make fun of the show all the time, and I never saw one episode of it. My brother used to tell me to check it out, but I just told him he was gay and I would never watch it.

When I went to my freshman year of college in 2001, the girl that eventually became my girlfriend for the better part of the year, love Buffy. Being the nice boyfriend that I was, I would check it out for her. I put a little interest into it, but it never really got me fully into it. It probably was because I never saw any episodes before it, and was a tad be lost.

Then for her birthday, I bought her the first season on DVD. Before I gave it to her, I watched it -- and I was hooked. Bam, I had a new favorite show, and I watched the rest of season 6. I got season 2 as soon as possible, and watched that right away too. Basically, I had found my new favorite show and loved it. Angel eventually spun from that, and it is my favorite show that is on primetime television right now.

This year, I was telling people that it was my favorite show. This one girl was like, you're into that 'sci-fi/fantasy' stuff? I was like, nope not at all, I just happen to like those two shows. I don't like Star Trek, I've tried watching it and thought it was really lame.

Basically if anyone just gave the show a shot, then you might like it. I did and it is my new favorite obsession. Hell if anything the fight scenes are one of the best parts of the show. Buffy is gansta.

sci fi? there's really not that much science in it is there? and no, I really have no basis for thinking that (well, I did see the movie)

Season 4 was mostly about the difference between science and magic.

Yeah, I guess it falls under the horror genre.

So, it is a drama with the horror mythos as its backdrop with some comedic elements.

There ya go.

Damn, it finally got moved? I go away for a day, and my favorite thread dies.

And I believe the reason it's in the Classic folder is because it managed to stay on the top of the movie page for a year without being pinned.
