Guest Wildbomb 4:20 Report post Posted October 7, 2003 I find it amazing that people harp all over players for "showboating" or "taunting" the other team. If I were to criticize anyone for anything, how about the close-ups after someone strikes out, and you can watch them yell out "Fuck no! Absolute fuckin' bullshit" That is more of a problem than Manny's "slow" homerun trot. And although it was said already, I hate Fox's announcers, especially during the Damon-Jackson collision. "It's such sickening footage, it's hard to watch" as it's shown repeatedly. And on top of that, they harp on the Red Sox for reacting to fans who taunted Jackson and David Ortiz, because Ortiz applauded Jackson for being able to get up and be OK. If anyone should be shit upon, it's the Oakland fans who acted out.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2003 Just saw the Lowe celebration, it was just a windmill fist pump. He happened to turn towards the A's dugout but it wasn't intentional, just a moment of jubilation. Hell I've done that before, celebrated unconsciously at opposing teams just due to jubilation so I think this was taken as something bigger then it really was. Tejada should worry more about his expletives and his performance that celebratory gestures.
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 OK, I saw a replay of Lowe's celebration, and he does make a quick 1-handed "crotch chop" motion towards the A's dugout.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 Now I haven't seen it so I don't know, but does he actually do a 1/2 crotch chop or just kind of pump his fist downwards? I have seen plenty of times where someone just pumps their fist to the ground.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 8, 2003 He really did a Fist pump around his crotch, I believe unintentionally in front of the A's Dugout...
Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 Immediately after the strikeout, he does some fist-pumps. He then turns towards the A's dugout and does a quick fist-pump towards his crotch, then turns away towards his teammates. I was rooting for the Sox, but it did look suspiciously like a crotch chop. Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 3. Have you ever heard anything but reverence for Babe Ruth calling his shot? No, but that Harlem kid got blasted for it. Have you ever heard anyone complain about Bret Boone flipping his bat? No, but Ricky Henderson, Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez all get shit about their post-HR acts. Rickey Henderson is a self-centered jackass. Barry Bonds is perceived as arrogant and abrasive. Manny Ramirez is lazy and guilty of frequent mental lapses. Babe Ruth is arguable the greatest player in the history of the game. I don't think Manny, Rickey, and Bonds' antics are decried because those players are black, but rather because they're painted poorly by the media. Personally, I don't care what someone does after a HR or an important strikeout. Obscene gestures should be right out, but beyond those, who gives a shit? Someone got caught up in the heat of the moment and had a spontaneous, emotional reaction. That's a good thing. I'll admit I get annoyed when players celebrate routine tackles in the NFL ("Look at me! I did my fucking job!"), but if an athlete comes thru with a big play, he should be able to celebrate it without people boo-hooing and shitting on him for it. I feel the same way about teams "running up the score."
Guest Choken One Report post Posted October 8, 2003 Bonds is equally considered one of the greatest of all time as much as Ruth is... It's bullshit that Ruth gets this beautiful image painted on him...with him coming up from a Oprhanage and emerging as America's Good Jolly Homering Icon while he was in reality a Vicious racist violent womanizing bag of dirt...his Called shot? That was even more grandstanding bullshit then ANYTHNG manny, Barry, or Sammy done. Bonds doesn't talk to people because he's shy and he doesn't do what White Media wants him to do (I.E be Sammy Sosa and hop around and be cute). Manny Rameriez stands there for no more then 5 seconds and gives a breath of relief and points to his teammates and he is the bad guy? It's all bullshit caused by a dumbass announcer who knows SHIT about what he is talking about... Baseball players are too fucking Sensitive, they are the ACLU of Athletes...everything offends them... Tejada proved himself as a hyprocrite as he criticized Lowe for his celebration yet was captured multiple times that night alone audibly shouting obscenities... Looking for ANYTHING to keep people from remembering that he and his team mates CHOKED for the 4th straight season.

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 I'll admit I get annoyed when players celebrate routine tackles in the NFL ("Look at me! I did my fucking job!") I was watching the Dolphins/Giants game Sunday and was curious as to the difference between "taunting" and those custom dances some athletes perform. It's OK to do that thing Joey Porter does, but if Sam Madison (I think it was him -- it was a Dolphins DB) spins a football, looks over at the Giants sideline and says something that gets a 15-yard penalty?... Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 Justin Smith's nails in the coffin sack dance was great. 2nd only to the Saints team leadfrog TD dance a few seasons ago.

It was Brock Marion, not Madison. That Chiefs guy who busted out The Worm got a laugh out of me.
alfdogg 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 The Sox are like the Sacramento Kings of baseball. The media and the announcers will find ANY reason to scrutinize them, and take away from any major accomplishment they may make.
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 Bonds is equally considered one of the greatest of all time as much as Ruth is... As he should be. Let's see... a man of the 1920s and 1930s judged in the context of the politically correct, heaven-forfend-someone-be-offended age we live in. Of course there are going to be things to pick at. But revisionist history isn't anymore accurate than what was written about Ruth at the time. Note also that I didn't delve into anyone's off-field behavior too much. You're the one driving down this road. Bonds doesn't talk to people because he's shy and he doesn't do what White Media wants him to do (I.E be Sammy Sosa and hop around and be cute). He's also smug and aloof. Not that those traits bother me, since he's certainly earned the right to be standoffish if he wants to. But Bonds is a little more than just "shy." Manny Rameriez stands there for no more then 5 seconds and gives a breath of relief and points to his teammates and he is the bad guy? It's all bullshit caused by a dumbass announcer who knows SHIT about what he is talking about... I've already said I don't care about HR celebrations. Manny could have done cartwheels up the first-base line for all I care. What I said about Manny is that he's lazy and prone to mental lapses, which, if you're familiar with his history as a ballplayer, is true. How he celebrates important homers is a matter of great indifference to me. Baseball players are too fucking Sensitive... So are some people who post on messageboards, apparently. imajackoff? 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2003 I think Shockey is the biggest prick in pro sports. Kinda blows the whole brother-hating theory out of the water. I freakin' love Barry Bonds. He gets a bad rep because he makes a cardinal sin: He doesnt placate the media. Heaven forbid that someone doesnt treat those parasites like they think should be treated. Just ask Eddie Murray. Or Steve Carlton. Or Brian Billick.
