EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 Its going to be real interesting to see what the Yankees do this offseason. They've rapidly accumulated a ton of bad contracts (Steve Karsay, Bubba Trammell, Drew Henson, Jeff Weaver). All told, the Yankees have $108 million LOCKED going into next year. And that's before Soriano and Boone go into arbitration, and with only four starting pitchers (counting Contreras). They've got holes at right field, starting pitching, and middle relief. Conventional wison says the Yanks target Vlad, but can they keep this up? Giambi's salary doubles in a couple years.
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 If this were a close game, which is obviously is not, that play by Pudge would have been a momentum killer.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 Mik- would you keep Mike Lowell, or let Miguel Cabrera take over third, and use the money elsewhere?
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 It's tough to say. I'd hope that the Marlins could afford to keep both. I'd like to keep Lowell. He's coming off a career year...great numbers even with a month off. I'm not sure what Loria is going to do with the payroll however. I just really don't think that the Marlins can afford to lose both Pudge and Lowell in the offseason. Most assume it's a given that Pudge is gone, but he wants to stay and Loria has already proven to be a bit of a wild card when spending money. In a perfect world, the Marlins keep Lowell, keep Cabrera in the OF, and also resign Castillo and Pudge. We shall see.
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Ah man, that hit Cabrera's foot. Not like it matters at this point, but a rally could have gotten started.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 I wouldn't think keeping Pudge would cost MORE money than they're paying him now.
the pinjockey Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I think the problem with resigning Pudge is if they are going to be willing to go multi-year at 10 a year this time. They might not want to sink a multi-year deal into an aging catcher. How old is Lowell?
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 In the same token, Pudge is only 31. He just seems so much older for some reason.
the pinjockey Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Good age for a 5 year deal. 29 is prime, then you decline (that's how it went right?)
the pinjockey Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I know that al, reference there to the Prime guy.
Guest Choken One Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 In the same token, Pudge is only 31. He just seems so much older for some reason. because he's been playing for 12 years and been to ten straight All Star games...
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 In contrast to the Yankees, the Marlins barely have any of their money locked up. $7 million of I-Rod's contract is deferred. Everyone else is under arbitration.
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 *cue pipe dream of Loria going CRAZY and signing Vlad*
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I'd also like to take this time to mention that Hideki Matsui is probably my least favorite player in the Major League, and the first inning HR has nothing to do with it. Something about him just irks me.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 Perhaps it was the 3 run HR......
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 8 run eighth? I can only dream for a repeat.
Mik Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Andy Pettitte is a free agent? I can't see him playing for any other team than the Yankees.
The Czech Republic Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Good age for a 5 year deal. 29 is prime, then you decline (that's how it went right?) No guys, 28-32 is prime, 33+ you decline, do you acknowledge this? AHH I MENTIONED IT NOW PRIME GUY WILL RETURN! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 Yes he is. I do think the Yankees will re-sign him.
the max Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Yes he is. I do think the Yankees will re-sign him. they kind of have to, as he's their only real consistant starter anymore.
Guest Choken One Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 8 run eighth? I can only dream for a repeat. The Yankees fans only interfere in the play when it HELPS them...not the other way.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 Yes he is. I do think the Yankees will re-sign him. they kind of have to, as he's their only real consistant starter anymore. So true (except for Mike Mussina). Just look at their 2004 rotation as it stands now...... Mike Mussina David Wells (team option) Jeff Weaver Jon Lieber Jose Contreras Hardly the Yankees of even this year.
the max Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Yeah, I kind of forgot about Mussina, even so, that rotation looks kind of bad... I mean I'm sure that Jeff "Way Back" Weaver is going to be good someday, but he's not meant for New York. Lieber is an OK pitcher, IIRC.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted October 20, 2003 Author Report Posted October 20, 2003 No guys, 28-32 is prime, 33+ you decline, do you acknowledge this? Obviously the Mets don't.
Guest Choken One Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Weaver is small ball pitcher...he doesn't fit the NY scene...he'd be great for Cincy
