Apter Mags Hate

Sure, it was filled with columnists who didn't exist, interviews that were entirely made up, used stupid terms like "fan-favorite" and "rulebreaker" when "face" and "heel" are just as easy to explain and easier to type and don't sound as stupid, and they had awards that were clearly fixed (Dusty more popular than Hogan in '87? Hah)

 

But, there were some strange times when they broke kayfabe and actually reported incidinces that surprised me. For example, without them I never would have known about the Arn-Sid scissors incident or the Orndorff-Vader brawl.

 

Now you could say "What about reading the Observer?", but how did one find out about the Observer in the pre-net boom days? I couldn't find the Observer on my grocery store magazine rack (where I spent a great deal of my childhood reading at, but that is another story)

 

And I didn't get on the net until 97, and even then it was a year or so before smarkness set in (though I was a big heel mark even as a young kid, so I think in that way I was destined for smarkness)

 

So, anyway, share your thoughts, jokes, whatever about the Apter Mags.

WOW, I think I spent a large chunk of my childhood doing the same thing. I am not sure but didn't the apter mags have ads for the observer or torch? I thought they did, but I could be wrong. Plus they definately had the 900 number hotlines that may have given the backstage story(I don't know though considering that I've never called them).

The only love I have for the Apter Mags comes from nostalgia and the PWI 500. It's way too markish for my liking, but back in '95, it was how I was first found out about ECW.

I used to love the Apter Mags as a kid. But like most past AM readers, once you found out about the behind the scenes aspect (newsletters or internet), the love for the AM faded away.

I still read through the Apter mags (get 'em from work), and while many of them have taken to breaking kayfabe (something that they started doing after WOW Magazine began doing it) they're just entertaining filler to me, ESPECIALLY the PWI 500, which compiles their list based on star popularity and which indy guys get their info into them on time.

I have to agree as well, back then those magazines were the only information I had about non-wwf talent, and I still look for the pwi500 every year. So even though it is a kayfabe magazine and many of the stories were just ridiculous, they did have their good points.

The day PWI published its first smart feature (ross in '97 or kerry and kevin von erichs in '93, depends on how you take it) was the day the last remains of wrestling died. I'll always miss the days in my classroom spent on reading them mags.
