Puro - US equivalencies?

Recommended Posts

Who would the puro stars be equivalent to on this side of the ocean? Like ...would it be fair to say that Chono is the japanese Hogan, or that Kobashi is the japanese Jericho...something along those lines.

I'd put Takayama more into the Foley category, not for his wrestling style but for his population.

Foley is known for taking the really sick bumps in the death matches and cutting himself to pieces. Takayama is known for being a punching bag in PRIDE and taking huge shit kickings as a result.

Chono is more like The Rock, neither has a particularly large repitoire but both have mega charisma and can put on good-great matches even without usiing a lot of moves.

Kenta Kobashi = Shawn Michaels

Manabu Nakanishi = Brock Lesnar

KENTA = Edge

Tatsumi Fujinami = Ric Flair

Jun Akiyama = Chris Jericho

A-Train = continously pushed despite lack of talent or heat. Sounds like Yoshinari Ogawa to me

Didn't Zach Arnold already call Ogowa the "X-Pac" of Noah?

As for the topic in general: Isn't it possible that some wrestlers just don't have a Japanese equivalent? Japan is not another dimension that mirrors ours, it's just a different country. Hogan didn't go to Japan to fight bizarro-Hogan, he went to fight Masahiro Chono, who really doesn't have that much in common with him other than having a similar fashion sense. Just because they have wrestlers doesn't mean they have to resemble the ones over here.

I'm having trouble seeing why any of this is relevant.

Dude, the topic is just for fun. Not much has been going on within the board, so what's wrong with having a little fun. On a sidenote, I would make a case for Kojima being the Rock of Japan. His crossover into the fashion world along with his playing to the crowd is akin with Duane.

I'd have to say the easiest ones would be

Tsuruta=Flair

Baba=Andre (duh)

Kobashi=RVD (not so obvious, but think of it, flashy moves, crowd rallies behind him no matter how much he loses)

Nothing wrong with fun, I just find this type of fun to be innane and pointless. What's wrong with discussing the wrestlers instead of making poor comparisons to American wrestlers?

It seems to me that if someone wants to know about any of these wrestlers, it'd be easier to tell them about the wrestlers instead of saying, "Takayama = Jericho."

Yeah, I think we all know that Kobashi isn't half the worker that RVD is...

Lighten Up Dude

Plus, I've always gone on Scott Keith assertion that Takayama is what would have happened if Terry Gordy had a kid IN Japan

Who's the US equivalent of CIMA...?

Spanky??????

I didn't say they exactly equal each other, sheesh, but just for the reasons I listed. Don't think of it on a workrate scale, but Kobashi pulls out the flashy moves (moonsault, half-nelson suplex, burning hammer) and RVD does too (split-legged moonsault, rolling thunder, 5star). Kobashi lost to Misawa constantly, and RVD loses to HHH constantly, but they were still both very over.

I'm not too up on everything in Puro but it made sense to me to go with Scorpio. Both him and Tajiri are working outside their home nation, and I guess both of them do a lot of kicks.

Id say Trent Acid as he does get the same kinda heat/reaction and i can see some similarities in their work. But Trent aint half the worker CIMA is...but he could be.
