The Dames' Diatribe on WWE No Mercy 2003

Recommended Posts

About the Matt thing-

Matt's a heel so he's probably going to root for Vince McMahon and think he's going to win the match.

I think you WAY underrated Rey v. Tajiri- I thought that was MOTN easily.

Good stuff though Dames.

By the way…did anyone catch Matt Hardy give away the ending to the Steph vs. Vince match? If I did, I’m sure you can bet WWE management did.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that was just Matt being a heel. The way I took it, Matt was assuming Vince would win (as evident by last week's SmackDown), which is why he told Heidenreich that he would give the tape to the new GM.

I’m also in awe that this is the 3rd PPV that Vince McMahon has wrestled in this year, the 2nd for Stephanie and Survivor Series will be the 2nd for Shane.

Sorry if I sound like an ass by correcting you, but Survivor Series will be Shane's 3rd PPV match this year. He beat Bischoff at SummerSlam, then lost to Kane at Unforgiven.

As always, good diatribe Dames.

I was going to post that Matt Hardy, as a heel, was only showing support for Vince McMahon over the face Stephanie McMahon, but two people have done so already so I'll save you further embarassment to your odd statement about giving away the ending and not bring it up.

Good review, but then again, I think you underrated the Rey/Tajiri and Angle/Cena match. And the Vince/Steph match, as disturbing as it was, didn't deserve -***. Wasn't planned too bad at all.

Yet, I AM happy that somebody else besides me didn't find the Taker/Brock match all that great. I thought it was just okay, but I came online and people were praising it as if it was in the running for match of the year. ** sounds about right to me, so I'm happy with that rating.

And....

My Opinion: This match was disappointing, but the fact that it was a Biker Chain match pretty much guaranteed it. These guys went about 15-20 minutes of mostly slow brawling with the only bright spot being some new moves used by both men. There weren’t any real believable falls because no one honestly would think that the match would end without the chain coming into play. Then there’s the lights going out for no reason…

I think that was part of Vince's plan so he could run down to the ring and hide under the apron, only to come out at the end. Dames, were you paying attention to the PPV at all? :P

I pretty much agreed with the Rey-Tajiri rating. It's ridiculous to build a match with legwork and armwork and then just decide to stop selling it and have it not even play into the finish. It reminds me of HHH-Benoit, when Benoit worked on the arm the whole match and it didn't even play into the finish. The apron rana was real cool, as was the powerbomb counter to the rana, but these guys have done far better, and I know that deep down they have a **** match inside of them.

I thought you overrated Taker-Brock, but generally agreed with what you thought of the match. No SD only ppv until February, they need to take this time to change some things around. The absolute burial of Eddy was awful.

Check this though…on the back of the SummerSlam DVD, the match listing still advertises Matt vs. Zach. How’s that for false advertisement?

WWE seems to have gone back to the Coliseum Video days, where they print the covers in advance, before the show. Below all the matches, they say *card subject to change... same as the Vengeance DVD.

Good review, as always.

It reminds me of HHH-Benoit, when Benoit worked on the arm the whole match and it didn't even play into the finish.

Benoit used HHH's weakened arm to break out of the pedigree twice? and continue beating on it. HHH couldn't hold him in it. To my knowledge, Benoit was the only person ever to counter the pedigree the way he did and that was because HHH's arm wasn't 100%. HHH than had to use a low blow while Benoit was distracted to hit the pedigree. He could only nail a surpised, weakened Benoit with his finisher who was convientently bent over from the low blow at the time. There's no other way Hunter would've been able to hit his finisher. Nice, smart storytelling.

I enjoyed Mysterio / Tajiri, but to me anyways, Angle / Cena was clearly the MotN.

The arm had nothing to do with the counters at the end, it was just Benoit and HHH repeatedly countering the moves the same way. When HHH eventually hit the pedigree, he didn't even sell the arm.

The arm didn't have to be decapitated to the point where you couldn't move it 1 cm in fear that the worst pains of your life might come from it. The arm can easily be at something like 85% which would allow HHH to move it but at the same time give Benoit the extra edge he needs to break HHH's grip and that's what happened. That's all Benoit needed.

Rationalizing people that forget to sell in wrestling is absurd. He worked on the arm the entire match, and HHH sold it very well until the end when he just totally ignored it after hitting the pedigree.

This past week on Smackdown, they tried to elevate their feud¡Kwith midgets.

I dunno if that's funny because of the way Dames put it, or if it's funny because that's actually what the writers were thinking.

And...just to nit pick

Earlier in the night, The Undertaker let Vince McMahon know that he wasn¡¦t going to interfere in the Ironman Match because he has too much respect for the WWE Title to do so. I wonder where that respect was when he interfered in the Rock/HHH Ironman match for the WWE Title, costing the champion the title in the last valuable seconds¡Khmm?

Well, the McMahons ran in first. Taker just came out to stop them.

Good read, as usual.

You mean your brother didn't scream: "It's SEX time, it's SEX time" on this PPV?
