Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2003 Weaver's not cut out for New York. If a team like Anaheim signs him I think he'll pitch like he did for the Tigers in 2002. As for the Twins. Wave goodbye to Hawkins, and Guardado. For some reason Corey Koskie was given a 4.5 milion option was picked up. That almost makes it certain Hawkins, and Guardado are gone. The rotation should be good. Radke, Milton, Santana, and Lohse. With someone like J.D. Durbin has the 5th starter. The Lineup should look the same for the most part. Stewart will be gone. So Jones moves back the Left, i'm guessing Cuddyer will get the first crack at RF, but Ryan will get an opportunity has well. AJ Pierzynski is a mystery at this point. Rumors had him being trade for bullpen help which the Twins will almost certainly need. Considering Pierzynski is arbitration eligible, and with budget concerns, and with Joe Mauer waiting in the wings. A trade might be necessary, and warranted in the long run. You don't like to enter the season with a 20-21 year old, but he's going to your catcher eventually. May has well trade Pierzynski at what might be is peak, and help the team in the process. Also being in the NL may help...especially since the NL East is going to lose alot of their power hitters to free agency this off-season. Besides I think Maddux (Along with Big Fat Boomer Wells) are heading west to San Diego- if that should happen than the NL West will be one fucking good division. If anything I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after bullpen help to get to Hoffman. I also heard one of the major FAs the Padres are looking at is Luis Castillo. He'd work well elsehwere in the pen, but I think it's time to go find a guy who would be more fit for the position. Farnsworth and Remlinger are the only other two mainstays in the pen and I expect to see them both back next season, which isn't all bad, since they werent' nearly as terrible as some of the other guys in the pen. It's encouraging to know that they're already addressing the bullpen situation, since that's the area that was really lacking for the Cubs this season. Speaking of pitching, let's look at the starting rotation. At the moment, you've got Wood, Prior, Zambrano, and Clement who are more or less sure to be back next season, barring an injury or transaction. Unless Zambrano gets hurt, I expect him to start to become as effective, if not more so, than Prior. That fifth spot belonged to Estes most of the season, with Juan Cruz taking over near the end of the season. Although neither guy is that great, I'd go with Cruz who's still young enough and shows more promise than Estes, who's never going to be a really good pitcher. If Mitre comes around, he may just get that fifth spot, as he didn't do too badly in his two starts for the Cubs this season. I think Estes is pretty much out of it now, and they're going to work on building Cruz up. Farnsworth will never amount to anything until he gets released from the Cubs, natch. So I'd bet the rotation is Wood-Prior-Zambrano-Clement-Cruz, barring transactions or the off chance that Clement improves to #3. There's questions about how much he wants to stay in Minnesota. The dome being the main reason. Besides, I wouldn't break the bank for the guy. If someone like New York, or Seattle offers 7 million let him go. White Sox won't finish ahead of the Twins. Especially if they hire 3 time reject Buddy Bell has manager.
