Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2003 Benoit/Angle is a solid **** match. Definitely the North American MOTY, although I haven't seen Homicide/Corino. I have seen XXX/AMW and Benoit/Angle is better. If Benoit/Angle gets higher than ****'s because of Benoit's standing ovation, then I don't know how you would rate Kobashi/Misawa from March in Japan. The ending of that match had some fans visibly crying for joy because of the outcome. Kobashi/Misawa is MOTY for the world.

As I stated in the Puro folder, I'll give it ***** because they replaced their usually excellent psychology with tons of emotion, and that it's understandable that in their last match together, they wanted to hit all their big moves. But as a pure wrestling match, I'd have to say that London/Dragon 2/3 falls from ROH the same month is superior. Misawa and Kobashi brought the crowd excitement and the big moves, but it didn't touch the pacing or storytelling of London/Dragon.
Guest John Dub Report post Posted October 26, 2003 I was at the Rumble this year and saw Benoit/Angle. The deal was, I was hyped to be at a huge show and was really looking forward to the Rumble itself (Which I liked). I thought Steiner/HHH had potential (I was dead wrong) and I was not hyped about Angle/Benoit in the least. I'm a super smark, and as such I love both men, but there's only so much they can do together, and the match had very little buildup. I should have known better. About 3 minutes in I just realized something special was happeneing. The buzz of the crowd, especially a Boston crowd, just hanging on eevry move. I've never been a part of something like that before. I was enthralled. The match was just so crisp and everything went right. Then the standing ovation came. I don't know, I got the weirdest feeling. It just felt so weird to have that happen, especially in Boston, for nothing more than good wrestling. I just kind of shivered with excitment (It was a smart mark's wet dream) and I really like to think we made Benoit a very happy man that night, because he had given us something special. Of course, Vince just buries him in the preceeding months, but that was something I won't soon forget. I don't remember a great deal of the match, save for the end, the long headbutt, and the DDT on the apron. I haven't seen it since, but really should. Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted October 26, 2003 Please the AMW/XXX tag match wasn't even the best match for TNA this year. The semi's and final of the X tournament last month were all superior matches.

(North America, Japan, Mexico) I haven't had the oppurtunity to watch AmDrag/London 2/3 falls, so my scope is limited to saying Kobashi/Misawa is the best match I've seen this year. However, I wouldn't rate Kobashi/Misawa the full monty of snowflakes. It had more emotion than Angle/Benoit and some killer headdrops, but some psych did start to take a back seat. I'd put Misawa/Kobashi at **** 1/2 with Angle/Benoit right at **** even. Again, I haven't had the chance to watch any ROH from this year or any high profile Lucha matches. HurriShane 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2003 Although Benoit vs Angle from the Rumble was a great match, I give it ****. I don't think that it was even the WWE's MOTY which I would have to give to HBK vs Y2J from Wrestlemania.
Michrome 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2003 Angle-Benoit is clearly the WWE MoTY, but I don't think it's the U.S. MoTY. First of all, London/Danielson from 4/12 is worlds better, and is just on a whole different level. The selling, the drama, the heat, the crowd, and the intensity in that match is something I haven't seen since Austin/Hart from WMXIII. It's the first U.S. match I'd consider giving ***** to since that match as well. I'm getting Homicide-Corino any day now, and one of the people I trust the most for workrate said it was fantastic, so I can't wait. There are a bunch of others too, but Benoit-Angle was definitely choice, around **** from me. On another note, I found the cage match to be so horribly overrated. I think it was ***, a fun brawl and blowoff, but nothing more. PPS: Misawa-Kobashi is almost as overrated as the cage match. I felt like it was just a series of recycled spots of the past with the type of no-selling and head dropping that I hate. I thought it was ***1/4. I just saw Kobashi-Nagata today, and it was far better, around ****.

Maybe it was just the Wrestlemania feel to it, or maybe its because Shawn Michaels is in it. You should watch that match too. But Angle vs. Benoit is a close second for MOTY. Who knows? Maybe the next Angle/Benoit match will be better than the Royal Rumble one.

Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted October 27, 2003 I really liked Y2J vs Michaels but the match was full with weak looking offence which really brings it down. Still a really good match but lacking in believability somewhat.
Austin3164life 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2003 Angle/Benoit is definitely worth the download and it is a great match, (not sure if it's the WWE's MOTY) but the psychology in it is a bit flawed at times. I feel that it was a spinoff of the awesome Unforgiven 2002 match that they had months earlier. Angle/Benoit at the Royal Rumble was called, by a lot of TSM faithful, one of the greatest matches of all time. That in itself tells me that people were so enthralled with Chris Benoit's standing ovation, and I was as well when I first saw it. I just feel that it might become the most overrated match of the past 3-5 years if people keep creaming over it because of the Standing-O.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted October 27, 2003 I haven't seen the other candidates, but Angle/Benoit definatly beats out the TNA cage match.

Because we'd already seen Angle vs Benoit a few times before and this was the first time for HBK vs Jericho. Plus that match had a special wrestlemania feel to it. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Angle vs Benoit was a bad match I'm just saying that I think it's a little overrated by some people that's all.
