Anyone play poker?

Recommended Posts

Guest EQ

Do we have any poker players here at TSM? I play for money about once a week but I'm on pokerstars (link) fairly often playing just for fun.

Hell yes.

I started a thread about this at SNKT, in fact.

I play for money ($20 buy-in, no-limit Texas Hold'em) once a week, and I also play for money online, with UltimateBet. I've tried some of the other online places, and I like UB the best. Even the play-chip rooms are pretty good, if you don't want to play for real money.

Pretty much the same for me. I don't play for money online yet (although I'm considering buying in for $50 at pokerstars). I've heard that UB is a good site, so I might check it out. The play money rooms on pokerstars are pretty fun, although it gets annoying having people play like assholes because the money isn't real.

Every week, me and some friends play ($20/$25 buy-in, dealer calls the game). We usually play no-limit holdem, but sometimes we spice it up with a little 7 card stud and omaha hi/lo. Every now and then, someone calls a more obscure game (wild games are rare, but they happen), but it's usually those three. My favorite game has to be Omaha hi/lo. I used to hate it, but once I got the hang of how to play for the low (it confused me for a while), I started to win pots.

Euchre > Poker

It's still possible to bet on it, too, just throw down 10 bucks a game, or whatever.

I enjoy playing poker, it's just that I'm exceptionally unlucky, and not particularly fond of losing money, so I rarely do, unless it's just for shits.

I only play poker with suckers, I couldn't hang with online players, it cuts out my strategy, which is to tell people that they have a tell, and then watch for when they're carefully doing the opposite.

I've never played Euchre either.

I'm not good enough at Poker yet to play for money, so I stick with hussling Euchre at school and stuff.

EDIT: Euchre is a 2 on 2 game and the first team to 10 pts. wins. Hands depend on what's trump with Jacks of the same color being the highest with every suit. So if you say have diamonds the Jack is top then the Jack of hearts is 2nd. You also onlying play with face cards, 10s and 9s.

So a typically hand the dealer gives everyone 5 cards and turns the top one of the leftovers up. You go around the table and everyone gets a chance to order it up or pass. If no one takes it you go around a 2nd time and players get a chance to call anything from the other 3 suits.

That's the very basics.

I sometimes play euchre at a dollar a point, but I much prefer Hearts. I can rarely get a foursome to play more than a game or two with me though, because I rarely lose. There's no greater adrenaline rush in any card game than trying to shoot the moon in Hearts. I don't like poker that much.

Some of my friends play every few months. We usually do quarter ante, but the pots can get big. I lost like 80 bucks one bad night. The pots usually get crazy towards the end of the night, when we start picking longer games that involve more antes. Depending on how much we're drinking preople start using paper money.

We don't play straight poker very often in that night. We play alot of different games.

I've played many variations of poker over the years. Texas Hold'em is the version I prefer to all the others. Five-card draw sucks because it only has two betting rounds, and you need wild cards for people to play their hands. Seven-card stud is a perfectly good game, and it's probably my favorite after Hold'em. Omaha feels broken at first, since you get four cards, but I have a hard time shaking the Texas Hold'em mindset and remembering I can only use 3 from the board. Crazy Pineapple's a decent spin on Hold'em, but not as good as the original.

If anyone is serious about playing poker for money (even in $20 home games), you owe it to yourselves to do some reading. Phil Hellmuth, David Sklansky, Doyle Brunson, and Ken Warren all have good books on the market about poker (usually hold'em, so shop around a little if Hold'em isn't your game).

DrTom's right. Texas Hold' em is the way to play poker. I play either in Reno (2 hour drive from where I live) or this small card house about 5 minutes from where I live. I used to just play 5 and 7 card stud, but it gets old.

You haven't lived until you've played Texas Hold'em in a casino though.

You can also play 3 man euchre, or Cutthroat. I prefer playing 2-on-2 though.

I bet that can get intense. I haven't played in a casino yet (I'm not confident enough in my poker skills, but I'm getting there.)

I should be going to atlantic city within the next few months, so maybe I'll give it a shot. I'll play tight

My problem is I fold like an accordian. It also chips my hide when I fold and see someone clearing the pot and I had the best hand on the table. Texas Hold'Em is the ultimate feel out game. While it does give me a rush, I still have a long way to go before I could even consider myself an ok player.

I have the same problem. I don't have the balls to stay in if someone bets big preflop. One time, I folded A, 3 suited before the flop. Sure enough at least three more of the same suit (it was diamonds) comes up by the turn card and I would have had the nut hand since the board didn't pair up.

It's hard not to, sometimes.

Basically, I only play good hands, except on rare occasions when I'll play trash to keep people guessing. Generally, I go for hands whose blackjack value is 19 or greater, any pair, and Ax suited. If you have high pairs or AK, raise before the flop. The thing about Hold'em is that you're playing your opponents as much as you are the cards. Look at the board and try to put them on hands based on the way you know they bet. Spend a little money and buy some information to see where you stand. And if you have a good hand, look at the number of outs you have compared to the pot odds, and be aggressive. Get out if you know you're beaten, but if you have the best hand, make people pay to try and draw something to beat you.

That's how I play: tight, but aggressive. I don't play a lot pf hands, but when I'm in a hand, I'm in it to win it, and I'm going to make you beat me unless the board is bad for my cards.

I'm pretty sure Euchre's primarily a midwestern thing. Everyone I play online is from the great lakes region, or directly south of it.

It was explained pretty well up above. It's a piece of cake to learn, and hard to really master, which makes it a game that one can play over and over again. Great for parties, or any drinking occasion, although by the third game, every card laid is prefaced with two questions: "What's trump?" and "What was lead?"

The person could've called it up themselves, but it still gets asked. It's also a game that everyone from Indiana learns by sitting in for relatives at a family gathering while they get a beer or take a piss or whatever.

Maybe so. I'd never even heard of it until someone mentioned it in this thread. I read the description on how to play and I don't get it at all. If people were playing it and I could watch, I'm sure I'd get it. That's how I learned poker

Yeah it's mostly a midwestern thing. If you come to Ohio it's huge on college campuses.

Oh, it's cake to learn.

Every hand, one suit is made trump. The trump suit beats any other card. For instance, say Spades are trump, a 9 of spades would top an Ace of Clubs. An Ace of clubs would still beat a nine of clubs, though.

Trump is determined by first turning up the top card leftover after dealing. (4 players, 5 cards apiece). The person to the left of the dealer determines whether he wants the card facing up to be trump or not, and either orders it up INTO THE DEALER'S HAND, or passes the call to the next player, who would be the dealer's partner. Same deal there. Then it goes to your partner, and finally (if necessary) to the dealer.

The dealer can either pick the card up, making it trump, or turn it down.

If he decides to turn it down, then the player immediately to the left of the dealer can call trump out of anything in his hand (other than the suit that was declined at first)

Congratulations, you know what trump is.

That sounds like a lot of bullshit, but it plays more like this.

"Deal the cards, flip one up, pass or order it up, then pass or call trump." That's it.

Now, with the trump suit, the JACK of whatever suit is called is the most powerful card in the deck. The JACK of the same color is the second most powerful card in the deck. Then it goes A-9 of the trump suit, then A-9 of the off suits.

The person to the left of the dealer leads. One card is played at a time, and you must play the same suit that was led. Play goes to the left. If you can't follow suit, you can either trump what was led, or throw an off suit. Failing to follow suit is a renig, and you automatically lose the hand.

Get it so far? That's pretty much all there is to actually playing it. Scoring is pretty simple.

It's real easy to pick up if you get some cards. It's also addictive as hell, because a game can last a while, and it's easy to do other stuff (like drink) while playing it.

i'm a big Texas Hold em fan myself. Usually make it out to Atlantic City every couple of months to jump into games. It's very fast paced in a casino, and I think less fun then playing with friends, but if you know strategy, you can win often.

And to the guy who said he's like an accordian, I think that makes you a much better player, as long as you stay in for the right hands. I only play 10-15% of hands, it where the percentages are.

I lost $60 this week. I think I'll take a little break from poker for a while

I lost $40 last night, but I'm not going to take a break from it. I know I was betting right, but people were keeping lesser hands despite my raises, then catching their second pair/making their straight/making their flush on the river. I won $150 last week, so I was the guy who was able to do that the previous week. Not so last night.

I play every now and then with my friends. I've wiped them out many times, except for the last time I played. We're probably going to be having a game of Hold 'Em mixed with 7 Card Stud Saturday night. I can't wait since it's been a while since the last game.

I used to play online, but lately I havent been playing any video/computer games besides solitaire while chatting on AIM.

So how's about video poker? Anybody play that any?

According to http://fastodds.com/gameodds/videopoker.htm

"Once you have mastered the basic strategy for a type of video poker, and find a high-paying machine, then you can expect to make money in the long run. What does this mean?

It means that after about 50,000 hands, the odds dictate that you will have hit every possible hand combination, including the coveted Royal Flush. Sure, that sounds like a lot of hands, but this game can go very quickly, especially for experienced players. It is not uncommon for a skilled video poker player to turn in 750 hands an hour - and even more if that person is playing two machines at once. If the player keeps this blazing pace up for eight hours a day, it will take just over eight days for the player to reach an expected win of around $1,750."

I've recently become addicted to this gay thing full of quarters at a local gas station. You drop a quarter in strategically, and knock off others in this pile. I turned 50 cents into almost 6 bucks the other day. Sure, it's hardly the choice of a high roller, but it's an amusing distraction full of shiny things, and it means free cigarettes, so nyah.
