Legends of Wrestling: Showdown

Recommended Posts

On his website last week, Ultimate Warrior teased a return to pro wrestling with the announcement coming today. Well, you Warrior fans out there (and you know who you are) will probably be disappointed to read the following, which was sent out in a press release by Acclaim today.

'ULTIMATE WARRIOR' MAKES HIS LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO THE RING EXCLUSIVELY IN ACCLAIM ENTERTAINMENT, INC.'S 'LEGENDS OF WRESTLING: SHOWDOWN'

www.legendsshowdown.com Salutes 'The Legends Legion' and Offers Wrestling Fans Glimpse of Eagerly Anticipated Title Launching in April 2004

GLEN COVE, NY, October 28, 2003 - Wrestling fans around the world will finally have their long-held dream answered, as Ultimate Warrior, one of the most popular, beloved wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling, is returning to the ring. Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ.SC: AKLM) today announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with Ultimate Warrior to appear in Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN, which is currently under development with Acclaim Studios Austin and scheduled for release in April 2004 across the next-generation gaming platforms.

Underscoring the significance of this announcement to the wrestling and gaming communities, Acclaim has launched a special Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN Web site (www.legendsshowdown.com) featuring exclusive, never-before-seen images of Ultimate Warrior, one of 70+ wrestlers who will appear in the game. Fans can visit the site and register to become part of "The Legends Legion," a free membership that qualifies them to receive ongoing email updates highlighting the latest gameplay and talent announcements. The SHOWDOWN site will also provide visitors with exclusive product information and free downloadable desktop wallpaper.

"Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN is the ultimate wrestling super card," said David Knies, Brand Director for Acclaim. "We revamped the Legends of Wrestling brand and created a ground-breaking game that establishes a new benchmark for future wrestling titles. To demonstrate our commitment to this game, we enlisted a new development team, secured a dream roster of wrestlers, developed new gameplay features and incorporated a realistic art style. SHOWDOWN is guaranteed to amaze and entertain generations of wrestling fans and gamers alike."

"Hello Warriors. I have been waiting for the perfect time to make my return to professional wrestling," added Ultimate Warrior. "Amidst the rumors and mistruths spread by others, my time to return is now and it's with Acclaim. I'm thrilled to be working with Acclaim again on the new Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN video game and I will take this opportunity to settle all unfinished business in the ring. Always Believe!"

Returning to the world of interactive entertainment after a seven-year hiatus, Ultimate Warrior worked directly with Acclaim Studios Austin to create a virtual character that is as authentic as the man himself, including his signature moves, unique look and mannerisms. A professional wrestler since 1985, Ultimate Warrior is recognized predominately for his talent inside the ring; he is a former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and a two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion

Yeah Warrior, that's a huge return to Wrestling. Idiot.

Don't get me wrong... as hilarious as I would have found it if TNA had signed him, I didn't want him back in the ring. I'm calling him an idiot for making a claim, then saying his return to the ring is in a video game.

But then again, this guy is nothing short of insane, so that's the kind of thing I should have expected from him.

October 28, 2003 - Originally hinted at in Acclaim's 2002 third-quarter financial results from January of this year, Legends of Wrestling III has been relatively quiet on the news front for the majority of the season. After a long bit of silence, however, it appears that today was the day to come clean; as Acclaim has officially announced the third installment of its Legends of Wrestling series: Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN and launched the Wesbite to go along with it.

Though most of the particulars are still forthcoming, Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN will mark the return of The Ultimate Warrior to the digital arena. Originally under negotiations to appear in WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain, The Warrior obviously decided to go to Acclaim's game instead.

When all is said and done, Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN will include over 70 different grapplers from various eras of the sport. Bret Hart, Sabu, Andre the Giant, and Scott Steiner are but a few of those who have already been confirmed and they'll participate in Table, First Blood, Ladder, Cage, Battle Royal, Elimination, Triple Threat, and Fatal Four Way type match-ups. As press time, Acclaim also exclusively confirmed through IGN that mat legend Dory Funk Jr. would make his return as well.

Other announced features include an all-new control scheme, an era-based feud-driver career mode, and hidden licensed areas that can be unlocked as you go along. Also planned for the final is two-man audio commentary, built-in wrestling tutorial, and improved create-a-legend options.

Legends of Wrestling: SHOWDOWN is currently scheduled to ship in April of 2004 for the Xbox and PlayStation 2. Check back with IGN for more on SHOWDOWN in the coming weeks when we'll have impressions and details on an early build, and don't forget to check our sister site IGN Sports for an interview with one of the legends themselves early next week and profiles of each wrestling leading up to its release sometime in the future. In the meantime, click on our media page below for the first batch of official screenshots -- stay tuned.

What legends are left besides Savage that could draw?

Isn't this sad? They used Bret and Hogan to sell the first two and now they depend on WARRIOR to promote this one? This will tank.

I hope by classic matches, it means you will be able to relive matches, ala Giant Gram.

I thought this line was hilarious. All most of my friends (marks aged 20-something) remember about Warrior was him shaking the ropes like the mad man he was.

Bret owns his Name.

Warrior owns his likeness (there was that whole NASTY court case with vince for that one)...Warrior is his legal name.

Andre is a public Figure i believe so he can be used I guess.

Scott Steiner was a legend in the late 80s and early 90s, with his brother Rick. Both of them should be in the game. Also it would be great if they have all the stadiums from the big events from the past like the Pontiac Silverdome, Toronto Skydome, Wembley Stadium, and Caesar's Palace. They should also have Madison Square Garden.

No shit. He meant how can Steiner be in the game and in WWE at the same time. And the answer to that is that Steiner signed on with Acclaim for at least two games BEFORE he signed his WWE contract. That's how Lawler was able to be in the games, as well, he signed a contract with Acclaim before he was re-hired by WWE.
