Transcript of Norm on O'Reilly-

Bill O’Reilly: Norm Macdonald- his new programme A Minute With Stan Hooper debuts tomorrow on FOX at 8:30. Up against the Factor man-

Norm: Yea. I know I know I know.

Bill: It’s a tough timeslot. We want them to tape Stan Hooper and watch the Factor.

Norm: I was gonna mention earlier cause I know this is the No Spin Zone-

Bill: You bet.

Norm: The Lachkey (sp?) thing I saw a little bit of spinning. A little bit.

Bill: Yea.

Norm: And I’d like to say I was also a shareholder of Tyco. I did get invited to the party in Sardinia.

Bill: You did?

Norm: Yea- and you didn’t miss anything. The guy with the wings made a clumsy pass at me over by ice sculpture.

Bill: I thought you might’ve been the ice sculpture there for a minute.

Norm: What the-

Bill: No no. Now you were at Saturday Night Live

Norm: Yes.

Bill: It was a good gig for you, Weekend Update and all that stuff.

Norm: Yea yea.

Bill: Then you did the Norm Show.

Norm: Yes sir.

Bill: I never got to see the Norm Show.

Norm: I never watched it either.

Bill: No one did! And it was gone.

Norm: You know what an interesting this is- that uh even if no one watches your show

Bill: Right

Norm: It still gets ratings like a million people watch the show because uhhh people just don’t turn their tvs off.

Bill: Is that right?

Norm: Yea

Bill: So- there’s nobody in the room. It still clicks in.

Norm: Yea.

Bill: I guess that’s what’s happening at CNN- I don’t know. But anyway the uhhh this show- how do you get two shots? Because most people don’t get any shots. You know how many comedians there are out there in LA.

Norm: Oh yea yea

Bill: Trying to troll to get a show

Norm: Oh yea yea

Bill: This is another show starring you- how’d you do it?

Norm: I think uh uh pure raw talent.

Bill: Yea- they just saw it in you.

Norm: Yea uh there’s know uhh there’s know substitute for that.

Bill: They had to have you.

Norm: Yea

Bill: FOX demanded Norm Macdonald.

Norm: Exactly

Bill: Get him! Get him! How much control you have over this vehicle? Romano controls his show.

Norm: Uhhhh Romano?

Bill: Ray Romano.

Norm Ray Romano- of course.

Bill: You know him.

Norm: I know him.

Bill: Not as talented as you but he’s coming on.

Norm: He’s coming on.

Bill: How much control you got over this show?

Norm: Well ahhh I got a lot of control over it. I don’t rehearse so I write all week.

Bill: You write?

Norm: Yea.

Bill: How many other writers are with you?

Norm: Uhhh 5 and they’re a crack staff.

Bill: Alright so the show is gonna have an edge because your- that’s what kinda stuff you do.

Norm: No- it’s not gonna have an edge.

Bill: So it’s gonna be a bland kinda Ozzy and Harriet rip-off?

Norm: No sir- it’s gonna be a uhhh Green Acres rip-off.

Bill: (laughs) I can just picture you in overalls.

Norm: Yea.

Bill: You play a uh a commentator on television.

Norm: I play a commentator-

Bill: I hate those guys.

Norm: Yea yea yea I don’t care for them either. I play a uh guy that works in New York you understand? And he does his minute every week a uhh virto a uhh-

Bill: Like Andy Rooney.

Norm: Not Andy Rooney- he’s not a humorist. He extols the virtues of small town life. Like Mr. Charles Osgood.

Bill: Oh.

Norm: And uh but he’s very disconnected. He ya’ know he goes to parties at William Pailey’s house.

Bill: You look a little like Osgood. There’s a- run that picture back. Put it next to Norm’s face. Yea I can. That’s you in uh 8 years. After you work for FOX- that’s how you’re gonna age. Okay? Believe me. I’ve been here 7 years.

Norm: I don’t look like that. I’m trying to look like that for the show.

Bill: So you move to a small town in Wisconsin. Right?

Norm: Yes sir.

Bill: Okay so that’s gonna be funny I’m gonna be uhh amused by that?

Norm: I’m not gonna spin you- no you’re not gonna care for it at all.

Bill: (laughs) Alright now you hit it big and then you get the residuals and all of that. The Simpsons money is rolling in. You don’t hit it big you care?

Norm: Ummm well first of all uhhh I believe the uhh actors in the Simpsons I don’t think Bart got one penny of that.

Bill: No- but the guy who did his voice did.

Norm: Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh.

Bill: I’m sorry.

Norm: Yea- you got a lot of money after that.

Bill: Do you?

Norm: I’m not in it for the money.

Bill: What are you in it for?

Norm: The money. I am in it for the money.

Bill: Yea- I know you are.

Norm: I was gonna spin but-

Bill: You can’t. This is the no spin zone.

Norm: I know. I keep forgetting.

Bill: You can use that on Stan Hooper if you want?

Norm: The no spin?

Bill: Yea- you can use that kind of stuff and I wont demand any money for it.

Norm: Okay cool.

Bill: Ummm Saturday Night Live uhh do you watch anymore?

Norm: Yes sir I do.

Bill: You do? Is it as good now when you were there?

Norm: No.

Bill: Because you’re not there.

Norm: Basically because I’m not there.

Bill: Right. But you do watch it?

Norm: Yea- I watch it. I love Saturday Night Live.

Bill: I lost kinda contact with it. I think it’s maybe a generational thing.

Norm: It is a generational thing. I’m 61 years ol- young. I say 61 years- I say 61 years experienced. And uhh when I watch Saturday Night Live- I watch the show and I don’t even know what they’re doing uhh parodies of cause they’re doing parodies of like of MTV shows that-

Bill: Yea they’re Jewel. They’re making fun of and I have no idea.

Norm: Yea.

Bill: So I’m sitting here. Uhh when you do this FOX show ummm if it is successful are you gonna change?

Norm: Am I gonna change?

Bill: Yea. Are you gonna be the same guy you are now? The humble guy-

Norm: I’m gonna be the same dirty son of a bitch as I am now.

Bill: Right. Thank you this is live tonight. We appreciate that.

Norm: Well that’s not- that’s not swearing.

Bill: Oh no- of course not. No that’s just Fox.

Norm: I think that’s the-

Bill: That’s Fox.

Norm: That’s Fox.

Bill: We’re gonna see that on Stan Hooper aren’t we?

Norm: No we’re not gonna use such language.

Bill: Norm Macdonald good luck with the show- we appreciate that.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox's summer sleeper "The O.C." hung tough in its return to primetime Wednesday even as it faced off against ABC's reality hotshot "The Bachelor."

"That '70s Show" also strutted its stuff in its sixth season debut, winning the 8 p.m. time slot for Fox, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research, but Fox's new Norm Macdonald sitcom, "A Minute With Stan Hooper," struggled to hold on to its "'70s" lead-in.

Despite the activity at ABC and Fox, NBC took the night overall in total viewers (12.7 million viewers) and adults 18-49 (4.6 rating/12 share) thanks to respectable showings from "Ed" and "The West Wing (news - web sites)" and a big pop at 10 p.m. as usual for "Law & Order."

"That 70s Show" opened the night for Fox with an average of 10 million viewers and 5.1/14 in 18-49. The premiere of "Stan Hooper" followed at 8:30 p.m. with 7.2 million viewers and 3.7/10 in 18-49. At 9 p.m., "The O.C." brought in 9.2 million viewers and 4.2/10 in the demo, a solid showing considering the heat of ABC's 9 p.m. matchmaker, "The Bachelor" (14.1 million, 6.4/16), which generated the highest demo score of any show of the night. CBS' 9 p.m. comedy "The King of Queens" (12.5 million, 4.0/10) also held firm at its recent ratings levels despite the "Bachelor" surge.

ABC's good fortune ebbed considerably at 10 p.m., however, with freshman drama "Karen Sisco" (8.3 million, 3.2/9) unable to keep up with NBC's dominant "Law & Order" (16.3 million, 6.0/17).

For the night, ABC placed a close second to NBC in adults 18-49 (4.5/12) while CBS was No. 2 in viewers (11.2 million).

Tonight on A Minute with Stan Hooper....

AIRING WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH AT 8:30/7:30 CENTRAL ON FOX

Writen By: Cindy Caponera

Directed By: Jeff Melman

After Stan learns that the mayor of Waterford Falls is running unopposed, Stan decides, with encouragement from Molly and the crowd at the diner, to run for office. Special guest star Max Wright as the mayor.

Max Wright should be awesome tonight. Him and Norm were hilarious on Norm and had great chemistry together.

The fact that they are once again playing rivals should mean a hilarious episode. Hopefully they will establish Stan's relationships with Ryan and Gary and we will gain more insight into the people of Waterford Falls.

I have high hopes for it even though I don't think Willard will be in it.

That's good- they don't need to harp on the father-son conflict anytime soon.

This episode should also clue us in on whether Molly will just there to be Stan's conscious and the voice of wisdom or whether she will be funny as well.

And we'll also find out if Ryan's girlfriend has a point

Well assuming it stays the course of the ratings- it won't bomb.

The show is the second highest rated new comedy on FOX and finished second in its timeslot among the 18-49 demographic.

That's good.

Oh and the show OWNED tonight. The first one saw Norm struggling to find the way he should play Stan Hooper- but tonight he found his voice.

I'll have a full review up in a bit

I enjoyed the show for the most part, and that's all I want to say. Well, I'll say one more thing...

...they don't make sitcoms like they used to.

I hope to God that Norm can keep this afloat, but I'm not sure that it's going to be possible.

A Minute with Stan Hooper:

How good a show can be when they try to be funny…

Last week I found Stan Hooper to be a great new show. It didn’t have a lot of laugh out loud scenes but it did its job. A show like A Minute with Stan Hooper needs to establish all its characters while at the same time making the show funny enough. It’s a tough task but given the talent involved- they can and have done it.

Aside from Ryan- most of the characters are pretty well established now- and now the show can bring the funny and it brought it in spades tonight.

It’s amazing watching Norm’s transformation here. The first episode he seemed a bit unsure on how to play Stan- now he knows. And instead of being the straight man who watches the action and comments- Norm was funny as well tonight. The comment about women voting was classic Norm. Fear not Norm fans- while our hero from Dirty Work has changed- Norm has shown signs that he’s not completely done away with and it’s for the better.

The stupidity of Waterford Falls is a bit disconcerting at first but Norm is using them to their full comic extent. While the women not being allowed to vote story was a bit absurd- it did provide for a lot of great and humorous lines. While I’d like to see the people of Waterford Falls be given a little more credit- in the end I don’t care- as long as its funny.

The first scene was great. As long as it doesn’t wear thing I’d love for them to do a segment like that every week. It’s an easy way to open up the show with a laugh and it gets the viewer sucked in and laughing.

Now for my complaints on the show:

Max Wright looked awful tonight- I guess someone’s been snorting a bit too much. He was given one scene to showcase his stuff and he failed. Norm and Max didn’t have the chemistry that they had on Norm- and I think that’s because he played such a pussy here tonight. At least Max stood up to Norm on ‘Norm’.

Reagan Dale Neis has got to go. The show has enough stupid small towners- she’s not really needed. Her relationship with Ryan isn’t necessary. Ryan already has two storylines on the show: Her character just holds Ryan back from two potential storylines.

I also would’ve liked to have seen the Ryan lives with Stan relationship explored a bit more but they only have 22 minutes.

Other stuff:

I was right about Norm not overusing the butler. He was only on for a couple seconds and was really funny. I hope this trend continues.

The show was just hilarious tonight. The stuff with the Communist was hilarious- in fact I LOVED the whole debate. Norm has a great interaction with the people of Waterford Falls. He plays the straight man to perfection. If tonight is an indication- I’m really looking forward to seeing more of the Stan v. small town storylines.

Kudos to Fred Willard, Daniel Peterson and Garrett Dillahunt. Dillahunt had a lot more material to work with and I’m starting to enjoy him. Willard and Peterson were great as always.

It doesn’t look like Penelope Ann Miller is going to be very funny. I don’t mind it since there are many other people who are there just to be funny. She’s not.

This episode was MUCH better then the first one- which was no slouch itself. I hope the week by week trend of the show getting funnier continues- cause we could be in for a real treat.

I hope to God that Norm can keep this afloat, but I'm not sure that it's going to be possible.

I said the same thing in one of my SNL reviews- but the show really is a lot different then most sitcoms on the year.

That's more Barry Kemp's influence I would assume since he is the famed producer behind Newhart and Coach.

I'm glad SOMEONE at this board found the show funny- it's a show that deserves a couple seasons just to see Waterford Falls evolve.

And again- on the ratings....

Were they good last week? No

Were they astrocious last week? No

EVERY FOX show is doing poorly- even 24. The show will last if it doesn't completely bottom out (which I don't see happening) and if FOX has faith in it and wants it to succeed.

I'm just thanking God that every FOX show is doing ass right now. Hopefully Stan Hooper will continue to do well in the 18-49.

can they write off his wife, please?

The wife has to be on the show. Stan Hooper is supposed to be a mature, down home humble guy at heart- and his wife helps that image.

Him being a single guy looking to score with the chicks doesn't help his image.

She's not supposed to be funny. She's there to help Stan's character and just be there for him.

Like I said- not everyone can and should be funny.

God Bob is a Mark.

Norm could do hand puppets in a port a potty and to bob it's still classic comedy.

Yeah, he is EXTREMELY biased.

I'm willing to say Caputo isn't the greatest songwriter of all time and that LOA isn't the greatest band ever...so Bob should be willing to tone down his fanboyism for Norm.

Do I think Norm is the funniest guy ever? Yes. Is Norm my #1 hero in life? Yea. And I'll be the first to admit that Norm SUCKS at acting.

But I will criticise him when he deserves it. His other show 'Norm' had a lot of stuff I didn't like. I never liked when they did romantic storylines, or when Norm had to act sad about something. (The acting)

There are parts of Stan Hooper I don't like. Reagan Dale Neis for example- she serves no purpose. And I hope Max Wright as the mayor was a one shot thing thing since he looked awful last night. I also hope Norm keeps the people of Waterford Falls 'simple' rather then outright stupid.

Norm had some shows that didn't rock the kasbah- and Stan Hooper will as well. (Well assuming it keeps going- which isn't likely)

This has been bugging me since i saw the episode... is the guy that plays the mayor the same guy that was Norm's boss on The Norm Show? I know I've seen him from somewhere

Yes- the mayor was Max Denby, Norm's boss on 'Norm'.

He also played the father on Alf.

WEDNESDAY RATING NEWS-

CBS's Country Ways Wins Wednesday

Fri Nov 7, 3:23 AM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters TV to My Yahoo!

By Cynthia Littleton

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS won the first Wednesday of the November sweep by a country mile with its telecast of the Country Music Awards, which featured a heartfelt tribute to the late Johnny Cash (news).

CBS' 8-11 p.m. CMA telecast, which originated from Nashville, delivered the award show's highest ratings since 1996. The CMAs won every half-hour of primetime time, finishing with an average of 20.8 million viewers and a 6.2 rating/16 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. Viewership of the awards show peaked from 9-9:30 p.m. with 22.1 million viewers and a 6.6/16 in 18-49.

The surge for the CMAs took a bite out of the competition. ABC hung tough with "The Bachelor" (13.5 million, 6.1/15) in the 9 p.m. hour, but even NBC's 10 p.m. stalwart "Law & Order" (16.4 million, 5.6/15) appeared to be dented by the turnout for the CMAs.

Fox's "That '70s Show" (7.7 million, 3.7/11) was way down from the numbers it posted last week with its season premiere. The downtrend continued with the second outing of Fox's 8:30 p.m. freshman comedy "A Minute With Stan Hooper" (5.2 million, 2.5/7). Things perked back up for Fox at 9 p.m. with the new teen drama "The O.C." (7.5 million, 3.5/9).

For the night, NBC placed a distant second to CBS in total viewers (12.6 million) and tied for second place in 18-49 with ABC (4.2/11).

The boost from the CMAs helped CBS open up a wide lead against its Big Four network competition through the first seven days of the November sweep (Oct. 30-Nov. 26) with an average of 13.7 million viewers, which marked an 11% gain from its standing in last year's November sweep. CBS was pacing No. 2 for the sweep to date in the adults 18-49 demo (4.3/11), down 5% from its year-ago mark.

NBC maintains the lead in the key demo with an average of 4.9/13, down 8% from November 2002 and is No. 2 to CBS in total viewers (12.6 million, down 8%). ABC is running third in adults 18-49 (4.1/11, down 15%) and in viewers (10.8 million, down 8%). Fox is in fourth place with an average of 8.5 million viewers (down 15%) and a 3.8/10 in adults 18-49 (down 18%).

The WB Network has a comfortable lead over UPN in viewers (the WB's 4.8 million to UPN's 4 million), but the WB is off 15% from its year-ago benchmark, while UPN has dropped 11%.
