Damn it mike, no one is accusing you of being wrong, when you link to a tabloid PEOPLE WILL QUESTION THE VERACITY OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. WSJ, NYT, news networks etc. are more reliable than the National Enquirer and Star. Period. End of story. You can babble on till the end of time but that is the truth. I used the Reno example as a way to show that a blatant lie coming from a disreputable source can pass as the truth if no one bothers to check if its true. YOU didn't check to make sure it came from a reputable source. Therefore, we have the right to question the reliablity of the source. The more reputable the source the less ammo an opponent has to shoot it down as unproven. The burden on proof is not on the person who is being spoken too but the speaker (or in this case the poster)

And people are pissed because they assumed it WAS false and tried to prove it false.

And they FAILED.

Miserably.

And your Reno example was a poor one and I'll tell you why:

If the story seemed WAY out of line, I would have doubted it. But since France had contracts to sell Iraqi oil should the sanctions have ever been removed, I had little reason to doubt that they gave Iraq weaponry (or at least turned a blind eye towards it). Same with Reno. If somebody was to claim that she sent innocent people to jail during the rash of "child abuse" cases involving daycare centers in Florida, I'd buy it. But, nothing she ever said approached what you stated, so it seems REALLY unlikely --- and even LESS likely that it would not get a HUGE reaction.

If the story isn't far out of the norm for somebody/something/etc., then I will be less likely to question the source. And, in this case, it wasn't far from the norm for France --- just more proof of the hypocriticial little turds that they are.

No one tried to prove it false. We were simply of the opinion that the sources you chose could have been better selected by a blind chimpanzee overdosed on speed.

European countries sold arms to Iraq in the past. This isn't really much of a story.

But AFTER the embargo?

Didn't they bitch that we should follow U.N rules (which we DID do), when they did not do so?

-=Mike

Could just be old weapons made by France, sold to a country or org that supported Saddam, and are just now being used.

Hell, we probably still have weapons left over from Vietnam in our store houses.

There is saying that less is more.

You disprove that saying with gusto.

-=Mike

...They ALSO say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Again, you disprove it. Nice of you to make your usual superfluous appearance around here. Well, if that is it from you for this week, good.

I responded because I (more than most) had to deal with Rob Stone. I was agreeing with the assessment that you were using the "Rob Stone defense" by saying "Can you disprove it? I thought not." That is all.

If the story seemed WAY out of line

You see it doesn't matter. You can make up things that seem perfectly reasonable, it doesn't change anything. It still needs to be verified. I can't prove that the world financial markets aren't run by Jews; that doesn't make it true. That Reno rumor was spread around quite a bit on the internet before it was properly shot down. To be fair, that was a little wild, so maybe these would make more sense.

Tommy Hilfiger saying that his clothes wouldn't look good on Asians and blacks.

Lauren Hill saying that she would rather die than let white people listen to her albums.

George W. Bush describing rapper Eminem as "the most dangerous threat to American children since polio."

CNN's coverage of Palestinian celebration after 9/11 was old footage from 91.

The daughter of US Vice-President Dick Cheney went to Baghdad to serve as a human shield.

All of the above are WRONG. But most of them are certainly not out of the realm of possiblity. Does that mean we shouldn't demand that the sources for these statements be held accountable and assume they're corerect because they seem reasonable? If you think so, then maybe you should pack up to another message board where every single other person there agrees with you and thinks that whatever you post should be taken as Gospel. And by the way, mom jokes will get you EVERYWHERE in any argument you make. Keep up the good work mike... <_<

That's a poor example and a pretty silly point as well.

Hell, we probably still have weapons left over from Vietnam in our store houses.

All of the weaponry was manufactured after the embargo, so they clearly didn't do much in terms of keeping up with their weaponry.

Somehow, if American arms were used, I doubt it'd be forgiven so easily.

You see it doesn't matter. You can make up things that seem perfectly reasonable, it doesn't change anything. It still needs to be verified. I can't prove that the world financial markets aren't run by Jews; that doesn't make it true.

You also can't provide any proof that says it is. And since it is an absurdly far-fetched comment, nobody would believe it and one could easily refute it --- heck, check out CEO's of major financial institutions and most of them, likely, are not Jewish.

That Reno rumor was spread around quite a bit on the internet before it was properly shot down.  To be fair, that was a little wild, so maybe these would make more sense.

All of the above are WRONG. But most of them are certainly not out of the realm of possiblity.

Every last one of those is out of the realm of the possibility. If a paper said that these happened --- but somehow, nobody here was really mentioning it --- I'd not believe it.

Does that mean we shouldn't demand that the sources for these statements be held accountable and assume they're corerect because they seem reasonable?

Those seem "reasonable" to you? They seem absurd to me.

If you think so, then maybe you should pack up to another message board where every single other person there agrees with you and thinks that whatever you post should be taken as Gospel. And by the way, mom jokes will get you EVERYWHERE in any argument you make. Keep up the good work mike... <_<

Wasn't a mama joke. Was a joke about what he considers a legitimate source.

Now why don't you go out and actually provide a VALID comparison to back up your point as you have failed to do so?

Again, I might add.

Didn't you "quit arguing" with Mike a week ago because he asked you to provide just one shred of proof to support your idiotic statements and, when you couldn't (or wouldn't) do that, called us all ignorant and vowed to leave this folder forever?

Aren't you that guy?

...

Thought so.

Two Polish officers reprimanded for Iraq missile claims

WARSAW (AFP) Oct 16, 2003

Two Polish officers will be reprimanded for making false allegations that the country's troops found recently manufactured Franco-German missiles in Iraq which led to a diplomatic spat with France, the defence ministry said on Thursday.

"A high-ranking officer in Iraq and another officer in Poland will be reprimanded in the missiles affair," Defence Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski said following the report by the intelligence services into the affair.

On October 4 defence ministry spokesman Eugeniusz Mleczak, who resigned over the matter on October 7, sparked controversy when he said that Iraqi police had notified Polish troops of the discovery of recently manufactured Franco-German missiles in Iraq.

The announcement sparked a denial from French President Jacques Chirac, talks with Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller at the EU's Rome summit and an apology from Szmajdzinski.

Poland's top military commander, Chief of Staff General Czeslaw Piatas, then said Polish forces had made an "error of interpretation" when they said they had found French missiles in Iraq manufactured this year.

The missiles, reportedly Roland surface-to-air missiles, had the markings that read 07-01-KND 2003, which the troops mistook for the year of production.

France was strongly opposed to the US-led war in Iraq, while Poland supported the American and British campaign to oust president Saddam Hussein.

Last month Poland took over the command of some 9,000 troops as part of a stabilisation force patrolling a large portion of central and southern Iraq.

On Thursday the head of military intelligence General Marek Dukaczewski said that the missiles had been made in 1984.
