The Shining........

Recommended Posts

It is about 14 minutes into the first of 3 parts. They are showing all 6 hours of it right now on Sci-Fi Channel. I like Kubrick's movie better, but I still feel this was a very good adaption as well. The best part is that with this version it was made for tv so you don't miss anything as far as content or commercial breaks go. Also it does have it's creepy moments, ala the hotel bathroom scene in this one is arguably more creepy then in the Kubrick flick..........Enjoy and use this thread for comments on it as well.

You can't really call this a remake. It's just a different adaption of the book. This version is supposedly closer to the book than Kubrick's version. I've never read the book, so I wouldn't know.

Well it sort of is. The point of the book is to make the house the main character. Not Jack, not the boy, not his ability to shine. The evil of the house is supposed to be the main focal point in the book.

It is a much more faithful adaptation, but that isn't necesarily a good thing. Stephen King's fondness for the miniseries is a bane unto him. I like Steve Weber though, he was fun.

I actually think the tv miniseries was one of the best stephen king made for tv adaptions. However since we have all seen and love Kubrick's version, it is hard to look at the miniseries without bias.

I am not a big fan of this miniseries, if I had seen this before the original who knows, but it sucks balls in comparison.

First of all, after seeing a 2 hour version, a six hour version just seems like pointless filler.

Second, the cast. I like Stephen Weber, but come on. And Rebecca DeMornay is just too good looking for this role. I like Shelly Duvall's hideousness. It made her look like a good character for a King movie. And the kid, in the original, had a good, odd look. This kid is just terrible.

Finally, I prefer the idea of the people going insane, rather than the house being more of a main character.

I like Storm of the Century best out of the King TV adaptations.

IT is pretty awesome, in fact that's another problem with King liking the miniseries format. He can't really top IT. Tim Curry turned in a lightning in a bottle performance, he was just off the hook in a way we almost never see on tv.

True 'dat. IT was basically the movie that got me started on Stephen King novels [and, ultimately, getting IT from the school library free cuz a few pages are loose].

The part where everyone remembers stuff is totally the best part of the movie. But the end movie...ugh. The end monster totally killed the ending.

IT was so awful, especially if you read the book first.

Objectively, it was a very lame adaptation, and as I said it makes it on the strength of Curry alone pretty much. Much of the book is unfilmable though, big Loevcraft influence and all, especially at the end which is why the movie end sucked so bad. I love that book, and I'm not really a Stephen King fan either.
