Forgotten free TV classics?

Recommended Posts

Guest Ray

I've been watching Steve Austin vs. Val Venis - Smackdown 10/21/99, and really enjoying it. Then I realize that almost no one talks about this match, and it makes me wonder if are there any other hidden gems from free WWF/E TV I've not seen.

I'm talking about older stuff...not from last year or something.

What WWF/E free TV matches should get more attention? What's been overlooked by most people?

Triple H, Lance Storm, Christian, and Test vs. The Rock, The Undertaker, Booker T, and Goldust from August 12, 2002 isn't just one of my favourite forgotten TV matches, it's one of my favourite matches of the summer.

Bret Hart and Hakushi from July 95 as well as his match with Jean Pierre Lafite from that October. The Hakushi match is easily one of my all-time favorite Raw matches and almost nobody remembers it.

The 8 man tag (Acolytes/Rock/Foley vs DX) from January 2000 (episode where Foley comes back) is overshadowed by the Dallas 10 man, but is definitely great. Also, Benoit/Austin from May 28/2001 is good (at least it was, live).

How 'bout Rios & Guerrero v Christian & Edge (or was it the Hardy Boys --- during the build-up for the rather good Rios v Guerrero match at Backlash)?

Heck, ANY of Booker T's WCW World Title defenses (Bagwell match excluded).

That was a good match.

That also reminds me of another really good match where The Rock fought the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac on the first show in January 2000. That's the same show where HHH beat Big Show for the Heavyweight Title.

I loved that match.

Kidman/Misterio vs Benoit/Malenko from Nitro in March 99 (episode where Goldberg speared Hart), I have fond memories of that.

How about Misterio/Flair from Nitro in April 99? It was on the Spring Break show. They fought in the water. Fun match.

We're talking forgotten classics.

Then what about the match after Mania 13 where Bret reforms the Foundation. That isn't talked about much.

Damian/Halloween Vs. La Parka/Silver King (I think)- Mexican Hardcore match from Nitro.

Really fun match, that the announce team totally ruined by just laughing at it.

Also:

Mr. Perfect Vs. Shawn Michaels - March to WM7 (still one my favorite matches ever)

Steiners Vs. Money Inc - CAGE match (should have been on that Cage Match DVD)

Bret Hart Vs. 123 Kid

RAW July 01, 1996: Shawn Michaels Vs. Marty Jannetty

HBK Vs. Bulldog - Early 95

Most people I know don't remember the match because they can't find a copy.

Oh, man, I loved that place. I still remember the time Ray Traylor pushed (Scott Hall?) into the lake, and then he just floated away (and I think Kevin Nash dove after him). It was really funny.

I wish WWE would use that set more, it would be awesome.

Mr. Perfect vs Doink, Raw Qualifier 3rd Match, 1993 - After 2 draws they had a great rubber match

Bret Hart, British Bulldog & Owen Hart vs Steve Austin, Undertaker & Mankind, Flag Match, 1997

Los Guerrero's vs WGTTP, Velocity - Outshined all their SD & PPV matches

Sting vs DDP, 1999 - Sting won the World title in a good match

Sting vs Hulk Hogan, 1995 - Sue me but this was much better than usual Hogan...especially WCW Hogan

Shit, I loved that too. It's the match that really got me into wrestling.

Sid came back at that show, right?

what was the date of this match?

Not sure but around WM19 -> Backlash.

February 22, 2003.

That seems to be their only tag match on Velocity.

That was actually the first match I tuned into when I started watching wrestling on a regular basis. Much love for that one.

Another match I always liked was the HBK/HHH Raw match from May 96. I think a copy of that is floating around on Kazaa now.

How many people remember that "Star Studded" 4-Way tag title match leading up to SummerSlam 98? It was (I believe) Rock and D'lo Vs The Outlaws Vs Taker and Austin Vs Kane and Mankind. It's been a few years since I've watched it, so I'm not sure how it holds up, but I LOVED that match live.

Edit: Also, add HBK/Mankind from 8/11/97 to that list.

Austin-Benoit from Raw in Dec. 2000.

It was Austin's first good match after he came back from neck surgery. Benoit called him out saying he couldn't WRESTLE, just punch/kick. The two ended up working a SWEET free TV main event.

i remember a very good eddie v. x-pac match in spring-summer 2001, shortly before eddie was in rehab. all i can remember clearly about it is that it ended with a sunset powerbomb. god damn eddie was feeling it those few months, with the hardy boys storyline & what not.

Bret vs. Hakushi is an all-time classic that is very underrated and forgotten by fans today.
