Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 The Braves signed Antonio Alfonseca to a one year contract. Alfonseca is generally criticized, but he's not a BAD pitcher. He's better than Roberto Hernandez and Jose Mesa at the least. He shouldn't close, but he could be effective as a middle reliever. Yes! Alf had his (rare) moments with the Cubs, but at the end of the day, he just wasn't worth what he was getting and I think a near clean slate for the Cubs pen is in order. Bored 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 A's non-tendered Frank Menechino, Jeremy Fikac, and Mark Redman. Menechino has been quite pedestrian the last two years, so no surprise there. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Red Sox take a look. He can play multiple positions, and he's got good plate disapline at the very least. Jeremy Fikac posted great numbers at AAA Sacramento. He could be a nice middle reliever next season. Mark Redman is quite the surprise, seeing how the A's just traded for him. He could make a nice 4/5 starter for a team needing a little insurance. Thank god that little shit Menechino is gone. Yes he can draw a walk but could do absolutley nothing else except give Jason Giambi blow jobs. You'll have to be a diehard A's fan to get that. I'm kinda surprised Fikac wasn't tendered but with the recent bullpen additions there probably wasn't going to be a spot for him. Redman actually isn't a surprise at all because he didn't fit under Steve Schott's salary cap. The A's payroll with Redman (who would have gotten probably $4 million in arbitration) would have pushed to about $58 million and Schott probably won't go any higher than $55 million this year. Yes $3 million means a lot to this asshole. I'm wondering why Beane bothered with the deal when he must have known there was no chance he would get permission to add more payroll. Oh well all they gave up to get him was mop-up reliever but it still sucks they have nothing to show for it.

MrRant 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 For the second time this week, the Mariners were rebuffed in an attempt to make a deal. Third baseman Jeff Cirillo has blocked a trade to the New York Mets, saying he'd rather come off the bench for the Seattle Mariners than take his chances with another team. The Mets and Mariners had agreed on a deal that would have sent Cirillo to New York for outfielder Roger Cedeno. "As far as the Mets were concerned, it wouldn't be a starting role, it would have been as a utilityman," Cirillo's agent, Jeff Borris, said Saturday. "He didn't want to move his family across the country if it wasn't going to be a starting job." Cirillo's contract contains a limited no-trade clause that allows him to block deals to about 10 teams. "We had a deal worked out with a club, but the player has contractual rights, and he exercised his rights," Seattle general manager Bill Bavasi told the Seattle Times. "So he is still a Mariner, until told otherwise." "I'd rather sit on the bench in Seattle where my kids are," Cirillo told the newspaper, "than sit in New York without my family around me." Cirillo is a California native who lives in Redmond, Wash., and his wife has relatives in the Seattle area. That was one of the main draws for Cirillo when he joined the Mariners two years ago. Asked about Cirillo's decision to exercise his no-trade rights, his wife Nancy told the newspaper, "Didn't anyone know? No one asked before." Earlier in the week, the Mariners thought they had acquired veteran shortstop Omar Vizquel from the Indians. However, Vizquel failed his physical, putting that deal on hold. Cirillo agreed recently to cut the number of clubs in his no-trade clause. But both New York teams were believed to be on his shortened list, according to the paper. Mariners officials believed he would approve the trade because of his desire to get away from the Mariners. Asked if he saw a release coming, Cirillo told the paper, "It's a big check to write." Cirillo is still owed $15.125 million on his contract. "My intention is to go to camp and play the best I can for Seattle, but I can't see myself walking through the Mariners' door in spring training, and I told them that," he told the paper. "You're trying to win a championship and, especially with new guys on the team, you don't need the distraction. "I appreciate Bill being honest with me today, he seems like a great guy, but I wish someone from the Mariners had talked to me before. It's a bad situation. I've played so poorly it's come to this. I really wanted it to work in Seattle; maybe I wanted it too much." The Mariners signed Scott Spiezio to play third base. Last season, Cirillo played strong defense but continued to be a liability at the plate. A two-time All-Star when he played in Milwaukee and Colorado, Cirillo hit .205 in 87 games last year after hitting .249 in 146 games the year before. The Mets are trying to unload Cedeno, who also has a big contract and has been a disappointment after signing as a free agent before the 2002 season. Cirillo spent almost a month in July and August last season on the disabled list because of a subluxated right shoulder. He did rehabilitation work in the minors but played in only two of Seattle's final 35 games. He started with a .171 average in April but hit .306 in May but trailed off after the All-Star break. On July 29, the Mariners traded a minor leaguer for shortstop Rey Sanchez and moved Carlos Guillen to third. Cirillo is owed $6.6 million in 2004 and $6.9 million in 2005 under a deal he agreed to with Colorado in July 2000. The contract contains a $7.5 million team option for 2006 with a $1.25 million buyout. Mets general manager Jim Duquette didn't want to speak specifically about Cirillo. "We will continue to explore all avenues to help improve our ballclub," he said in a statement. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. ::Shakes fist..... EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1691105 SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners agreed to a $6,875,000, one-year contract with right-hander Freddy Garcia on Saturday night, retaining the services of the workhorse of one of baseball's best rotations. Garcia has been the subject of trade talks going back during the season. "As of today, he'd be in the rotation and an important part of the rotation, but I'm not afraid to move anybody to improve the club," general manager Bill Bavasi said. "By our signing, this signals that this guy is pretty darn important." The team faced a Saturday 9 p.m. deadline for offering the 27-year-old Garcia a contract. If Seattle didn't offer a contract, he would have become a free agent, and if he remained on the roster as an unsigned player, the two-time All-Star would have been eligible for salary arbitration. Garcia also made $6,875,000 this year after winning in arbitration. It remained unclear whether the Mariners would offer contracts to several others, including right-handers Gil Meche and Joel Piniero and catcher Ben Davis. "All of our players are reserved in one way or another," Bavasi said. The Mariners need offense at the plate, and a trade involving Garcia was something they considered for months. However, Bavasi said it became difficult to negotiate any deals as Saturday's deadline approached. Teams indicated to the Mariners they preferred to wait and see if they could land Garcia as a free agent, should be not receive a contract offer. "The ability to trade him was destroyed by that, but that's OK," Bavasi said. "I don't say that with a complaint." Agent Peter Greenberg, who represents Garcia, said it was clear during negotiations what direction the Mariners were going. "They told us they weren't going to pay the same salary," he said. "We said we wouldn't take a pay cut and were looking for a modest increase." Bavasi said Garcia showed little interest in multiyear offers, planning instead on having a good season and then testing his value as a free agent. Bavasi said the front office considered making Garcia a non-tender and then trying to negotiate with him as a free agent, but team officials weren't confident they could bring a player of Garcia's caliber back. Nor did they believe any of their minor-league pitchers could replace him immediately. "We just kept coming back to same spot, which was, 'We're better off letting these kids develop further. We're better off keeping our horse,' " Bavasi said. Garcia's inconsistency has been maddening for the Mariners. Garcia slumped to a 12-14 record with a 4.51 ERA last season after going 18-6 in 2001 and 16-10 in 2002. In May, he lost three straight starts, with his ERA climbing to 5.90. He then rebounded to allow only two runs over a span of 24 1-3 innings, a 0.74 ERA. Then in July and August, he went 0-6 with a 10.03 ERA -- the longest losing streak of his career. In 2002, Garcia went 11-5 with a 3.44 ERA before making his second trip to the All-Star game, then 5-5 with a 5.66 ERA in the second half. "When you talk about erratic, it's not that one night he's got stuff and another night he doesn't," Bavasi said. "He's always got stuff. It's just a matter of getting a handle on it." Bavasi said team officials think highly of pitching coach Bryan Price and believe he can help Garcia. "We're going to bet that this kid will bounce back and do what he is capable of doing," Bavasi said. Garcia has been Seattle's opening-day starter for the past three years. He joined the Mariners along with John Halama in the October 1998 trade that sent Randy Johnson to Houston. Meche went 15-13 last season, becoming the first pitcher since Whitey Ford in 1953 to win 15 games after missing the two previous seasons. He spent two years in the majors after a July 1999 callup at age 20, then had two shoulder operations made him miss the 2001 season. He spent the 2002 season in the minors. Piniero is coming off a 16-11 season that included an eight-game winning streak in June and July. He set career highs with 16 wins, 211.2 innings, 151 strikeouts, 32 starts, three complete games and two shutouts. Davis backed up catcher Dan Wilson, hitting .236 in 80 games with six home runs and 42 RBIs. They really had to keep Freddy Garcia. He's good, durable, and not that much of a salary drain. I would have to think offering to Meche and Pineiro is just a formality. I wouldn't be surprised to see the M's part with Ben Davis however. He's looking less and less like the Mariners' catcher of the future.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 Karim Garcia and David Dellucci are gone from the Yankees. Randall Simon is gone from the Cubs. They let Simon walk????? Ok, that makes no sense to me. Bored 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 They got Derek Lee so they don't need Simon and he'd cost too much to just be a back-up. Only thing though is they did do the Lee trade like six weeks ago so I'm wondering in that time if they tried to trade Simon at least for a prospect. Other Cubs related news, according to their website it is expected that they did agree to a contract with Michael Barrett which would mean Damian Miller will go to the A's to complete the trade from earlier this week. Nothing is official at the moment though. Other A's related news, they signed Erubiel Durazo to a one-year deal worth $2.1 million. I think Durazo is no longer Billy Beane's "Holy Grail" to only get a one-year deal. Now watch him hit 35 homeruns and leave for a big contract as a free agent next offseason.
