Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2004 Here's the defensive spectrum.. [ - - 1B - LF - RF - 3B - CF - 2B - SS - C - - ] Players generally move right to left on it. What are some moves that you're expecting? Soriano started at shortstop and moved to second, and may move to center field.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2004 I hadn't noticed that before. His range factors look average. Maybe he suffers from Chuck Knoblauch syndrome. Of course, if the Yankees desperately need a third baseman, I propose trading for David Bell, of the Philadelphia Phillies. We won't even ask for a player in return. Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2004 The Yankees can try a new defense. Three infielders. Three outfielders. One guy to try catching/stopping stuff hit between those areas.
Bored 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2004 Without looking at every team in the league its hard to imagine a team having a worse infield defense than the Yankees going into the year. Problem is right now the Yankees just don't have much of a farm system and have no tradable commodities on the active roster beyond Alfonso Soriano and it'd still be way too hasty to deal him now just because of his lousy postseason. Also trading Soriano would just create a hole at 2nd and solve nothing. They're just going to have to wait until the July 31st deadline to get a decent 3rd baseman off a team out of contention. Before Lamb was basically forced off the Rangers roster because they had Hank Blalock he put up decent numbers in 2001 and 2002. Yankees actually have bigger concerns than 3rd at this point and those being keeping Jason Giambi, Bernie Williams, and Kevin Brown all upright the whole season. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 5, 2004 I had another idea in my head. Trade Mark Teixeira AND Chan Ho Park to the Yankees. They aren't going to give up Texiera since he, Blalock, Michael Young, and A-Rod(at the moment at least...the trade may be brought back up at the end of the 04 season) are the positional players they're building around. Park is off the books in a couple years.

HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2004 Credit to Rotoworld.com & the newspapers It's no longer a given that the Pirates will bring back Randall Simon. They're again talking to Travis Lee. Lee would be the better option for the starting job at first base. He had been discussing a deal with the Cardinals, but it appears that St. Louis will stick to its original plan of putting Albert Pujols at first. If the Pirates pick Lee, Simon will probably end up as a bench player somewhere. Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Red Sox signed designated hitter Ellis Burks, who had been with the Indians, to a one-year, $750,000 contract. It's actually closer to a $1 million contract. Burks would get $125,000 bonuses each for 30 and 60 days on the active 25-man roster. He also would get $50,000 for 300 plate appearances, $100,000 each for 350, 400 and 450 plate appearances, and $150,000 for 500 plate appearances. This is a great signing by the Red Sox and should give the team one the game's strongest benches. Kevin Millar is going to have to be careful not to go any lengthy slumps with Burks available to be the full-time DH if needed. Mets signed RHP Scott Erickson to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. In choosing Shea Stadium, Erickson picked a good place to make his comeback. Still, he looks like a terrible bet for this year. He hasn't been a solid pitcher since 1998 or even a healthy one since 1999. At best, he'll be a below average innings-eater as the Mets' fifth starter. Comments: Lee has always been decent if unspectacular but is a better player then Simon. I like the idea of Burks returning as a bat off the bench, hit .301 in 138 games 2 years ago at 37. Erickson's a fairly subpar player, giving up a fair share of HR's as well as posting a very poor BB/K ratio and has a career 4.51 ERA. Even if he were to become the Mets 5th Starter, they'd be better off signing somebody else or trading for a better pitcher.

Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted February 6, 2004 CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds won their arbitration hearing Thursday with right-hander Chris Reitsma. The reliever will receive $950,000 this year instead of the $1.45 million he had asked for. He made $350,000 last season and had been eligible for arbitration for the first time. Reitsma, 26, was 9-5 with a 4.29 ERA and 12 saves last season. He had three starts and 54 relief appearances. Arbitrators I.B. Helburn, Matthew Finkin and Christine Knowlton heard the case in Phoenix and issued their decision just a few hours later. It was baseball's first salary hearing this year. God, Finally. I was getting alittle worried. Since Linder is so cheap, they were thinking of trading Retisma for Jacque Jones. I'm happy. Hopefully this whole ordeal doesn't mess with his head though. Bored 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2004 Did you know there is no such thing as left/right platoon splits? As in there is no such thing as "lefty mashers". Did you even care? Well if you did here is an article by Rob Neyer on it which was sparked by a headache inducing debate on the Baseball Primer comment boards about the A's signing of Eric Karros. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor..._rob&id=1728907

Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2004 One question. Why would anyone want to play for Cuba. Mike Lowell, and Rafael Palmerio are both U.S. citizens, and have lived in this country almost their entire lives. The other players took a great risk in defecting. I don't see them jumping at the opportunity to play for Fidel Castro's Cuba.

Mike Lowell, and Rafael Palmerio are both U.S. citizens, and have lived in this country almost their entire lives. The other players took a great risk in defecting. I don't see them jumping at the opportunity to play for Fidel Castro's Cuba. That's a good question. I couldn't imagine any or at least most of the Cuban players in MLB wanting to play for a Cuban national team although Cuba could field their own team with players still in Cuba. But considering the World Cup will be an MLB organized event I'd imagine the first World Cup would be played in the U.S. and there would be potential for difection of Cuban players. I know the Cuban national team played an exhibition game against the Orioles about four years ago in Baltimore but that was just one game. A World Cup would probably take two weeks at least to play. Now I'd have to look it up but are their enough Cuban born players in MLB to field a full team? If there is then MLB could maybe just put together a team and call them the "Cuban All-Stars" or whatever name they'd want to come up with. Then players like Palmeiro and Lowell might be willing to play.

Bored 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2004 Associated Press SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- An arrest warrant was issued Saturday for Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Luis Martinez, who allegedly shot a man three times, police said. Police believe Martinez, 23, shot Rafael Encarnacion Quezada on Saturday morning in a hotel parking lot and were searching for the pitcher, National Police spokesman Col. Ramon Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez said. Encarnacion, 37, was shot twice in the chest and once in his left leg. He was hospitalized in critical condition, police said. Encarnacion works in the Caribbean nation's internal revenue service. Rodriguez said he didn't have details on a possible motive or why police suspected Martinez. The left-hander broke into the major leagues last season with Milwaukee, going 0-3 with a 9.92 ERA. During the winter Dominican baseball season, Martinez played for the Licey Tigers, which gave the Dominican Republic a win Friday against Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series. Licey general manager Fernando Ravelo said he had spoken with Martinez. "Martinez got in touch with us by phone this afternoon and gave his version of what happened," Ravelo told The Associated Press, without giving further details. "He's not running [from authorities], he's just scared."
