Now that they've ditched A-Rod, there's NO REASON the Rangers shouldn't persue Maddux.

But there's no reason Maddux would want to pitch in that ballpark with that team. It'd take him a lot longer to get to 300 with the Rangers. Also signing him won't get them out of last place this year and he obviously wouldn't be a long term solution to their pitching problems.

I am hearing rumors on another board that Bob Klapisch, spelling, is reporting that the Yankees are close to signing Maddux. He writes for the Bergen County Record and I believe he does espn too.

*unplugs MLB's life support*

Why doesn't Steinbrenner start his own NY/NJ based league?

How about Vazquez for Roberts? Huh? ;)

I'd like to see Baltimore get Contreas, or atleast Lieber.

The number I saw somewhere for Blalock was 5 yrs/15 mil. If that is the case the Rangers just made a steal, to get him at 3 mil a year. Even though he would have been cheap for the next two years, they will easily make up the money in a couple years during what would have been his three arbitration years.

I was going to start a baseball league on Yahoo! We had 14 teams last year, and other than a few non-participants, everything went pretty well. It'd be 5x5, using OBP instead of BA, but the usual roto categories otherwise.

Yahoo is open for registrations.

and, if the Os are trading a 2B to the Yankees, I'd rather them trade Hairston, but they better get someone other than Contreras.

I was just about to post that. I'm sure there are several people looking to start fantasy baseball leagues, and of course I am no exception. This year I want to try something different for myself. I'm going to start two separate leagues, one AL only and one NL only. I'm putting my baseball knowledge on the line. I'll have further details when I get them set up.

I was in one once where it was 20 teams, mixed league, and you started:

C

1B

2B

3B

SS

Corner Infielder

Middle Infielder

OF

OF

OF

OF

OF

2 SP

2 RP

3 P

That was quite interesting. The league was so strapped for players I actually had the big hitting Indians SS John McDonald in my lineup.

If I was going to make a deal, the last team I'd trade with is the Yankees or ANYONE in the AL EAST.

You don't do this and the last thing the O's should do is give NY that last piece of the puzzle. A FAST second baseman who can lead off if they need him to.

Roberts and Hairston are both very fast and I wouldn't give the Yankees the speed answer they want.

If you are going to move him, move him to a team with good prospects.

Well let me know when you open your leagues Tom/Al

Of course you're welcome for these leagues.

I only want to do a mixed AL/NL league. I don't have the time to be a part of more than 1 baseball league. So I guess Im waiting on DrTom

Not a problem. These will certainly be more challenging, and I hope those that sign up will devote the attention it deserves.

From The Smoking Gun

FEBRUARY 17--Barry Bonds's personal trainer admitted to federal investigators that he gave steroids to "several" baseball players, and two other central figures in the drug probe confessed that their San Francisco laboratory illegally distributed steroids to "numerous professional athletes," according to court records unsealed today. The bombshell admissions from Greg Anderson, Bonds's trainer, and two officials from BALCO, the San Francisco lab at the center of the steroid investigation, are contained in search warrant affidavits filed last September in U.S. District Court in San Jose. In the below September 3 affidavit sworn by IRS agent Jeff Novitzky (filed in support of a search of Anderson's home), BALCO executives Victor Conte and James Valente are said to have copped to their roles in the steroid distribution ring, and implicated Anderson in the drug conspiracy. A second IRS affidavit, filed in connection with a "follow-up" September 5 search warrant application for Anderson's computers, states that after Anderson initially denied "distributing" steroids, he subsequently admitted giving "steroids to several professional baseball players." While the names of most athletes were redacted, the identity of one baseball player is contained in one of the IRS affidavits--and the disclosure will probably upset New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. An IRS examination of BALCO's trash turned up outfielder Gary Sheffield's name on a February 2003 Federal Express receipt addressed to the lab (Sheffield was an off-season acquisition by the Yankees). According to press reports, Sheffield, who played last year for the Atlanta Braves, was one of several athletes to testify before the federal grand jury that subsequently indicted Anderson, Conte, Valente, and Olympic coach Remi Korchemny.
