There was a Xmas price cut, so I went ahead and picked one up.

A friend of mine said that if you turn it on and off with the switch in the back it will prematurely wear out the system, and what you should do is hold down the reset button until the light turns red and keep it like that while you're not using it. Is this true?

Two, I don't know what I have to buy or how much it is, but I don't really play anything besides fighting games, and Tony Hawk series. With this in mind, is it in my best interest to buy whatever it is I need to play online?

#1. You are both wrong. To turn off the PS2 unit, you grasp the plug firmly in your grubby fingers, and you pull it out of the wall socket.

#2. Yea, why not?

Be sure to pull it out slowly, while moving your finger down and touching the left prong at the same time

That's how it's done

I've never heard that, I've always turned it on and off with the back switch.

As for the online thing to my best knowledge there arent any fighting games with online play on the ps2

Guilty Gear XX is a fun little fighting game with awesome visuals. Its kinda like the Capcom Vs. series with a little bit of wild gameplay, but a little bit moe toned done.

Yeah, just hold the front button.

Oops. Didn't see the online thing.

Just make sure wherever you place the console that the spot near the coolant fan is dust free...otherwise you'll be getting disc read errors up the arse before you know it and cleaning the thing isn't fun

You flip the back switch and the red light comes on. This is standby mode. You generally can hold the reset button until it goes back into standby...walk off and do something for 10 minutes and then come back in and hit the switch again renactivating it. But yeah you should really turn it off from standby...not from ON.

I've had a ps2 for about a year and half and this is news to me...

It says it in the owner's manual. That when the red light is on it's in standby. And I've always heard from all of the game stores around here not to flip it off from on. Put it in standby and then turn it off.

I've had my PS2 from the first day they were out and I've used the back switch maybe twice. I keep hearing about all the problems that happen with PS2's and just shake my head, because I never have any of them, even with my system falling off my desk twice.

So hold reset till screen goes black then switch off by back switch?

No dummy.

See the button with the green light in it?

Press it down for about 5 seconds. The light should turn red. Release the button. The PS2 Unit is now off.

Leave the switch in the back alone.

Which is exactly what I said, besides the back switch.

For everyday use, you should just leave it in standby. If you only use it on Saturday night to watch porn, you should probably turn it off completely between "usings".

Ever since the day I bought the thing in August 2001, whenever I finish playing the system, I put it on standby, power it off with the back switch, then pull out the plug.

Ever since my original Playstation conked out prematurely, I always unplug it and all my gaming machines after play. The system still draws power from the wall when you leave it plugged in, and it can cause it to wear out quicker, or so I've heard.

So far, no real problems. So, there's over 2 years of it working fine, so I'd say your friend is wrong.

ever heard of X-Box?

You should invest one.

Looks like he's having a hard enough time trying to figure out how to run a PS2

Attempting to figure out an XBox may send him into the fetal position

I have had my ps2 for 2 years now. I always turn the system off with the back switch. I have not had one single problem with my ps2. Knock on wood. I do think you guys are worried about nothing... It's a power button, use it.

Think of it like your computer. You don't say "Well I'm done browsing online....." *POWER* No you shut it down then turn it off.

I do?

;)

I've never thought of it like that, I've always used the button in the back also.
