the max 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Guess they plan on loading up for the upcoming 'old-timers game' now. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=60895 It's due to the Reasoner injury, but even so, it looks like a good pick up. He wins draws, sets guys up well, and plays good defense.

Sandman9000 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Thought that's par for the course with a professional athlete?
Brush with Greatness 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Yeah, because they couldn't have actually used that money towards Comrie.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Thought that's par for the course with a professional athlete? I've met Oates(kinda...more along the lines of I saw him back at the old Garden up close), he wouldn't even acknowledge the kids that were yelling out to him just to try and get him to wave
treble 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 This is good. They were talking about this on the Hotstove on HNIC on Saturday, but Greg Millen wasn't sure that the Oilers could afford him. Obviously, they could.
Brush with Greatness 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Yet at the same time can't afford Comrie
treble 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 I think the Comrie thing is more him not wanting to play in Edmonton anymore as opposed to Edmonton not being able to afford him.
the max 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 The Comrie situation is more of the franchise getting pissed at him for not signing the contract that they gave him, and him wanting more money.
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 The Comrie situation is more of the franchise getting pissed at him for not signing the contract that they gave him, and him wanting more money. Actually there WAS a deal done that would've had Comrie with the Oilers and it was LESS than what Comrie wanted. However, Comrie nor Lowe are willing to talk about what the difference was that set them so far apart. It isn't really the money, it's something outside of the contract that Comrie felt should be addressed and Lowe disagrees with him on it. And I'm also guessing that this probably stems from the fact that Comrie doesn't appreciate how the organization has played him out as their only star and that everything should be pinned on him. At least that's what I'd guess he's probably steamed about. Only thing I could guess. Otherwise Comrie and the Oilers wouldn't be in the situation they are in. the max 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 He's far from their only star. Hell, I think more of Ryan Smyth, Jason Smith and Tommy Salo as clear-cut stars than Mike Comrie. Comrie just has more pressure on him with being from Edmonton and playing for the local team.

Comrie just has more pressure on him with being from Edmonton and playing for the local team. I don't admit that he's our only star. We've got Helmsky, Raffi, Brewer and a whole bunch of guys. (And yes, I spelt people's names wrong. SUE ME~!) But, you should read the Edmonton newspapers and crap. Anything on Comrie, it's top of the sports page. It doesn't matter if it's not even about the game, he's front news. The guy has been made out to be the local hero, and hence he DOES get that type of response of he's the hero that must be the only factor to winning. And yes, that comes from him being from Edmonton. When I talked to my grandpa (big hockey nut) about it, he told me Comrie would be gone for this exact reason in about this much time. Everyone makes him out to be the guy. I think he'd rather just be another Oiler, and besides, really he's only a small factor to why they are good.
MrRant 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Exactly how big is Edmonton?
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 Exactly how big is Edmonton? About a million and a half in truth. Including "Greater" Edmonton (that's also including St. Albert, and those towns that aren't really apart of Edmonton), then that's about 2 million. Edit: You know, I'll check my numbers. I think I might be off by about 500 thousand. Double Edit: Damn. Actually off by a million. On 2001 of March 15th, it was recorded that 2,974,807 people lived in Edmonton. Credit to http://www.citypopulation.de/ So that's about 3 years off, so it's probably 3 million today. Add in the surrounding areas and you've probably got close to 4 mil. It's the same thing with Edgerrin James, and Philip Buchanan. They are both headliners after the two Florida sports teams because they have a connection. And Hemsky and Torres are far from stars yet. Brewer is there now, but defensive defensemen hardly win any popularity contests. Goalies and forwards are always popular, which is why Salo is a big star, as is a great talent like Ryan Smyth. No offense, but I was pointing out that as a reason as to his holdout. Not trying to pin the blame on that as the problem. As far as I'm concerned, as long as someone puts up a nice production that wins us games, that makes them a star. I don't care all the guy did was block a shot and be lost for the rest of the season. If that blocked shot stops it from the net, guy's a star in my opinion. I just want my team to win. If they brought in Oates, hopefully it pays off.
Dogbert 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2003 I thought that Lowe offered him like 1.2 mil, and Comrie argued that players at his level were making over 4 and offered 2.3, but the Oilers' brass balked and Comrie decided to hold out.

That was so, but a week before training camp, suddenly everything was alright and a deal (no details) was about to be signed. Then it fell though.
