Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 Okay, I've always wanted to treat myself to a 5.1 Surround sound home theater thingie so I can get the movie experience at home (curses to their 9 dollar tickets). How much should I expect to pay for one of these things?

razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 Just go to Walmart or Best Buy and find something you like then. But speakers that cost more than your computer is well worth it if you have the right componets.
MrRant 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 I'm assuming you mean for TV so: Just buy a HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) they range from $150-500 for the somewhat high end. Most of the difference is in wattage. Check Best Buy because you can get good brands like Samsung, etc for around the $200 price point with progressive scan DVD etc. Another option is a get a good receiver like the Sony ones (around $250) and get a inexpensive speaker set (you can do it for like $100) and then slowly upgrade each speaker pair. If you can afford it then go piece by piece but the HTIB stuff is VERY good for the price especially if you live in an apartment or don't need 600 total watts. Yeah, the HTIB is what I was looking for. Thanks Ranto.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 I personally do not like Samsung but it is just my opinion. Whatever you get make sure it has all of inputs like S-video which is almost a must have now.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2003 If I were you I would hold off a bit. 5.1 is gonna be ousted soon by 6.1. 6.1 is basically the same thing but it puts ANOTHER center channel for the rear of the room. If you don't care about that then, go ahead and get 5.1 Also, I would get a reciever that can utilize DTS, since IMO, DTS is slightly better then 5.1. I have a 600 watt Sony HTIB. It's phenomenal! I would warn everyone to stay away from KLH and some of the other crappy brands. Samsung, Panasonic, and Sony are all good and can be bought cheaply. Yamaha is great too, but more expensive.
