I don't know, and I have a bad feeling they're just getting my hopes up, but I'm going to enjoy it while I have the chance. TC, congrats on a big win last night. The only consolation that I had while watching my favorite hockey get shelled last night was the knowledge that I had Belfour as my fantasy starter, and one of my friends had Potvin in net. Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Peca to the Leafs? I'll cry and rip out my eyes. Discuss.
treble 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Well, he's probably not going to Ottawa now. It appears that the Ottawa Senators are out of the Mike Peca sweepstakes. Peca is slated to earn $4.25 million this year and next year and $5.25 million the year after that. Sources have told TSN that the Senators like the New York Islanders' centre a lot, but his high salary and Islanders' GM Mike Milbury's demand for a lot in return pretty much rules Ottawa out at this point. The Senators main need is for a gritty left winger. They like the Nashville Predators' Scott Walker; however, Nashville has been demanding Senators' defenceman Anton Volchencov in return. Sources are saying that under no circumstances does Ottawa plan on trading Volchencov or any of their other young defencemen. I don't know if I want Peca in Toronto, as I've heard that the Isles want Matt Stajan as part of any deal. Stajan looks like he's going to be a good player and I don't really want to see Toronto give him up for another centre, which they don't really need. I would take a straight up Darcy Tucker for Peca trade, though.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Well, shit. Of course, you just knew that Mike Milbury was going to demand the world for someone to take his problem off his hands. I am unconvinced that there's a worse general manager in the league.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Peca for Tucker? Man Tucker isn't even close to the plaer Peca is. Does everyone forget the guy is a two time Selke Winner? Gold medal winner at Salt Lake. He's a star, I can see how any wouldn't want him on their team. The only excuse would be money concerns and deciding which players to trade. But c'mon, wouldn't trade Stajan for Peca? Thats ricockulous. If the Leafs want to win a championship, they have to trade these unproven guys for quality character players like Peca. Besides, if Peca was amongst other players of his ability, he would be able to play his game much better. But because his the best player on Long Island, people zero in on him every game. My feelings? He should go to the Kings of Canucks. Those are two good teams that need one great player to push them into elite status. Peca would be an amazing and dependable second line centre to back up Morrison, Bertuzzi, and Naslund.
the max 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Kings don't really need him, as they just got Straka in exchange for one good player with the Pittsburgh trade. Peca may have helped lead his team to glory before, but when he's been counted on lately, he's not done much. The Canucks could probably use him more. treble 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2003 Peca for Tucker? Man Tucker isn't even close to the plaer Peca is. Oh, I know, I just wouldn't mind seeing Tucker get shipped out of town. When there were the rumours of him going to Edmonton for Niinimaa at the trade deadline last year, I was crossing my fingers that it would happen. Tucker's more trouble than he's worth sometimes, and, come on, you'd have to admit it would be funny to see Peca traded for the guy who hurt his knee in the playoffs a few years back. Does everyone forget the guy is a two time Selke Winner? Gold medal winner at Salt Lake. He's a star, I can see how any wouldn't want him on their team. If the Leafs want to win a championship, they have to trade these unproven guys for quality character players like Peca. I would like to see him on the Leafs, but they already have a lot of depth at centre and I don't want to see someone like Stajan, who has a very bright future, traded for someone who isn't desperately needed. If they have to give up Stajan, I'd rather it be for a top line defenceman.

treble 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2003 Joseph ponders buyout Curtis Joseph mulled over a couple of options yesterday, including an apparent buyout of his contract, as the Detroit Red Wings pressed to end their unworkable relationship with the former Leaf goalie. As expected, Joseph cleared waivers today at noon, and with no NHL team anxious to either claim or trade for what's left of his two-year, $16 million contract, the Wings are negotiating with Joseph's agent Don Meehan to bring an end to his brief stint with the Red Wings that began with visions of a Stanley Cup. The Wings do not want to buy out Joseph's contract under NHL guidelines. Those guidelines obligate the Red Wings to pay the $8 million he's owed this year and two-thirds of next year's $8 million. Detroit assistant GM Jim Nill said the club has not gone as far as laying a buyout option on the table in talks with Meehan in the past two days. But sources claim GM Ken Holland has discussed a buyout with Meehan and that the two sides could make it work outside NHL guidelines as long as Joseph signs off on it. "There is no buyout on the table ... not right now, and we are not prepared to (assume) his full salary for this year," Nill said. Joseph's career with the Wings all but ended Wednesday when the club placed him on waivers. Joseph will end up in the American Hockey League in Grand Rapids if he refuses the buyout. Essentially, the Wings have told Joseph he can earn his full salary in the minors, or play in the NHL by accepting a buyout and becoming a free agent. The Wings are believed to be willing to assume $4 million to $4.5 million of Joseph's salary for this season. The sticking point is next season, but sources say a scenario in which Joseph accepts half of his salary — spread over four years at $1 million a year — could be on the table. That way, Joseph could sign with a new team for $4 million — a definite pay cut — but still be making $8 million in the long run. The Wings maintain they are still pursuing trades, but any real chance of trading Joseph hinges on how much of his contract the Wings are willing to assume. I think this is about the only way he'll play again this year, unless some team has REALLY bad injury problems.

Peca may have helped lead his team to glory before, but when he's been counted on lately, he's not done much. The Canucks could probably use him more. The Kings need all the leadership and firepower they can get; especially since they play out in the tough Western Conference. I honestly think the addition of Mike Peca puts them up there with the Blues and Avalanche.
the max 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2003 Leadership they need, of course. But Straka provides firepower, better offensive skills without taking away from his defense. Peca makes too much money for a strictly defensive forward who has been questionable in the last few years, who basically quit in Buffalo (a great leader there ) Blues will fade, as will Colorado upon losing to Vancouver for the division title. Scott Walker wouldn't be bad, but his concussion history is kind of an exclamation point, especially since Ottawa would have to give Nashville something good in return. Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted December 6, 2003 I "heard" Peca for Bonk. Although it seems like I've been hearing Bonk to ______ for _____ rumors for the past four years. Remember when Lecavalier was getting shopped in Tampa and some version of Bonk/Spezza to Tampa was all but a "done deal." As for Peca to LA, the Kings need someone to replace Deadmarsh. I think Straka is more suited for that than Peca.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 6, 2003 Peca has proven to bring firepower. He's simply on a below average team that isn't producing. Not many do produce when they are around shitty teamates, let alone a defensive player.

treble 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2003 Joseph's back up... again. DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings recalled Curtis Joseph from Grand Rapids of the AHL on Tuesday, less than a week after they sent the veteran goaltender to the minors for the second time this season. Joseph is back with the Red Wings, who have been trying to trade him for months, because Dominik Hasek will be out through the week after aggravating a groin injury against Los Angeles on Monday. Joseph may get a chance to play this week because goalie Manny Legace injured his knee during the pregame warmup before Monday's game. Legace is listed as day to day. Since Hasek ended his retirement in July, the Red Wings have tried to trade Joseph. So far, no team has wanted to take the rest of his two-year, $16 million contract. Joseph cleared waivers Friday, for the second time this season, and was assigned to Grand Rapids. The Red Wings have played this season with Hasek, Joseph and Legace, one of the league's top backup goalies. Joseph signed with Detroit before the 2002-03 season to improve his chances of winning his first Stanley Cup after playing 13 seasons with St. Louis, Edmonton and Toronto. He had a 2.08 goals-against average in the first round of the playoffs when the Red Wings were eliminated by Anaheim. That followed an inconsistent regular season in which Joseph won 15 of his last 19 regular-season games to finish 34-19-6. The Red Wings also recalled goalie Joey McDonald on Monday, from the Toledo Storm of the ECHL. Christ, make up your minds. If I'm Joseph, I just say 'fuck it' and go home until this whole situation is over.

treble 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2003 You can't help but feel sorry for the guy. If the Wings had just won their last game of the season last year, were the top seed in the West, and drew the Oilers instead of the Ducks as the 2nd seed, it's likely that NONE of this stupid sitation would have happened. Or, if his team mates could have solved Giguere (hell, if Robitaille's shot went in and didn't hit the post in OT in game 1), then there's no need for Hasek to come back and screw everything up. To top this all off, whenever Joseph's actually in Detroit, he's behind Leagce on the depth chart.
