The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Question for the Leafs fans ... will Belfour be able to come back and finish the year at 100%? After watching the Bruins dismantle Trevor Kidd the other night, if Belfour can't come back and finish the year fully healthy, I'd think that they'd be smarter to go after Kolzig (or some other netminder) rather than another D.

And I'm not trying to jinx myself, but I'm loving the fact that while the Sens and Leafs were so busy focusing on each other, the Bruins have snuck right back into the mix. 7-0-1-2 in their last 10, only TB and Buffalo have more wins in that time. And a big game tonight against Philly.

I think of all the goalies they could get that Roman Turek would be the one you would have to give up the least to get. Calgary doesn't really need him and would like to get rid of his contract if possible, so I'd bet that he could be had for a draft pick.

That being said, I trust Turek slightly more than I do Kidd, so I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Leafs uniform if Belfour doesn't get healthy soon (or hell, even if he does). Kidd would probably clear waivers at this point so he could be sent down to the minors, hopefully not taking too much playing time away from Tellqvist (who better get the fucking start tonight in Carolina), unless they decide to release him completely.

Man, I wish they hadn't let Corey Schwab go to Jersey.

You know what bothers me today?

ESPN.com in the NHL section has a poll for which game they should put on ESPN2 on whatever day it is...the games are New Jersey vs. New York or Toronto vs. Buffalo.

AND New Jersey vs. New York is winning.

Why? I can look at it from the angle where New Jersey is the most boring hockey team to watch in the history of hockey...or the angle that New York is just pitiful in spite of the "stars" on the team...or from the angle that Toronto and Buffalo almost always have great games...or that Buffalo is on a major roll...

I just don't get it.

I understand that there are more people in the New York/New Jersey area...but hockey fans have to recognize a boring ass game vs. an exciting game...don't they?

Hey, I'm there with you ... I voted for Toronto/Buffalo, too, and was astounded by how many more votes had been registered for NJ/NY. It's actually closer now than it was when I voted, 51.9% - 48.0%.

And I can't agree with your reasoning (the # of people in the Tri-State area) - neither of those teams have strong fanbases, so it's not like Detroit or Colorado where there would be tons of people voting for their hometeam. The only thing that I can think of is that the Toronto fans that are online are more likely to be on tsn.ca rather than espn.com, so it's just American fans voting. And most people outside of the Northeast division are probably unaware of the roll the Sabres are one (with the 2 minutes that sportscenter gives to hockey, if it's not a brawl or a serious injury, you're not going to see many highlights). So, the average fan is voting for the Devils based solely on their Cup appearances, rather than how mediocre they're playing now and how boring their games are.

I look at it this way. You have Toronto, NJ, NY, and Buffalo. Who are the biggest stars out of that group of four teams?

Jagr and Brodeur

So the casual fan probably looks at it as wanting the game where they see the biggest stars. Granted I doubt many people anymore go "Oh my god, I have to see Jagr.", but compared to the players on Toronto and Buffalo he would be the likely one to get that reaction.

I think it's non-hockey fans voting for the NY-NJ game. Most hockey fans know that Sundin, Satan, Drury, Nolan, Mogilny, etc. provide a more exciting game than Jagr does at this poing. And all hockey fans know that watching the defense-first (and second, and third) style of play that the Devils endorse is about as much fun as watching paint dry. It's the basketball and baseball fans (who are at-most casual hockey fans) that are voting for NY-NJ.

Flyers acquired Alexei Zhamnov and a fourth round pick from Chicago for Jim Vandermeer, Colin Fraser, and a second round pick.

I understand that they got strapped for forwards after trading Comrie, Williams, and Primeau Roenick getting injured, but I am pissed off that they had to trade Vandermeer. Besides the fact it is fun as hell watching him fight, I think he is going to be a very quality player in this league. He can be a physical force on the blue line and as a bonus he has shown flashes of offensive ability.

FUCK, the more I think about it I am really getting pissed about the trade. Vandermeer was a fan favorite, a quality young defenseman, and a tough guy who isn't a liability on the ice and all they get back is a 33 year old, unrestricted free agent, who only will really get you 20 goals a season. FUCK.

CC, do you have that Clarke picture handy?

Sens blow ANOTHER late lead and lose in OT to the Thrashers. You know, if the Sens won every game in which they had the lead going into the final two minutes, they'd probably be about 5 or 6 points clear in the East by now.

As it is, East looks like this:

x-Leafs (78)

x-Flyers (78)

x-Lightning (73)

Senators (77)

Bruins (77)

Devils (72)

Verrrrrry interesting.

93 penalty minutes assessed in the final 4:00 of the Ranger/Islander game. Wild ending. I wish Dunham would have come down to mix it up with DePietro though

Why does being a Bruins fan suck, you might ask?

10. Is there a team that won't even think about making a bold move?

The Bruins are still in the league, aren't they?

People can complain about bad trades, but at least your teams are trying to win. Look at some of Boston's big deadline pickups: Moran, McGillis, and that's IT. What kind of team picks up #4 and 5 defensemen as help to lead a playoff run? Teams that are only trying to get to the postseason, and not win anything, that's who.

9. What team is lurking to make the biggest additions?

Try the San Jose Sharks. With the Washington Capitals reeling, don't think that former Caps coach Ron Wilson wouldn't like to have Peter Bondra on his bench in San Jose, or maybe defenseman Sergei Gonchar -- even as a spring rental.

I'd love it if the Sharks got Gonchar as there has always been trouble from the point on the PP. I can't imagine what we'd give up as our we're really thin on prospects and management would be crazy to mess with the current team chemistry. Brad Boyes, who was acquired from Toronto in the Nolan trade, but he had such a poor training camp that Ron Wilson and the rest of the coaching staff flat out said that they questioned whether or not Boyes had an NHL future. He hasn't been called up this season, and I suspect he'd be traded if the Sharks make a deal.

LOL him and Ruutu crack me up but I'm sure if they were on any team other than the Canucks they'd be two of my more hated players.

Just finished watching a heart attack inducing Sabres-Lightning game.

Sabres had a 2-0 lead after 2, then the Lightning scored early in the 3rd, and Satan scored his second to put the Sabres up 3-1.

Then with under two minutes left and on the power play the Lightning pull their Goalie and they score again to pull within one.

Then with 50 seconds left and the Goalie pulled...Tampa scored again to tie it and send it to OT.

The Sabres seemed to blow a much needed point...until Briere scored with a little over a minute left in OT to give the Sabres their first OT win ALL YEAR (1-1-6 in OT) and save the point. Some finish to that game...thankfully giving Tampa a point doesn't hurt Buffalo.

Ruutu is great. Just looking at the guy makes you want to punch him out, even if he does play for your team. Apparently Chicago wanted him in any Zhamnov deal...if so, I'm kinda glad that deal fell through.

Ruutu also dives like a madman. It's great.

Anyone catch the Blue Jackets and Coyotes? That was probably the most exciting game either team will ever play. Coyotes trail 2-1, then score with only 19 seconds left in the 3rd to win. Pretty exciting I guess. Then they fight for like 2 minutes after the game. I wouldn't have wanted to be looking at Nash at the time. Right before they went off the air, Nash was grinching his teeth in anger and talking under his breath. He looked so pissed. Be interesting to see another meeting between these two franchises.

The first 10 games of the season I just thought he had really bad balance but by now I get up and cheer everytime he falls flat on his face in an attempt to put Van on the PP.

Today, in an extremely rare occassion, I root for Toronto.

Come on Leafs! Beat Montreal!!!

If Toronto and Buffalo both win (Sabres at Islanders), the Sabres will be only ONE point out of 7th and 8th place in the playoffs.

Screw the movie...that would be a miracle.

I was at the Montreal Toronto game tonight, and was probably one of the most exciting games I have ever watched (minus the first 20 minutes).

Seriously though, I think Julien fucked up putting Garon in net, but after the Rivet/Marchment fight, Habs just dominated.

Now, if only the Flyers can deal Seidenberg and Pitkanen that would do the trick. For a combination of four defenceman that, about 5 years down the road could rule the league for 10 years, they didn't get a hell of a lot back. Burke and Zhamnov? I mean, will the Flyers ever actually win the cup anyways?

Nope. They're just like the St. Louis Blues: they're doomed to forever make the first or second round of playoffs, but nothing else, for all eternity. I have some Blues fans in the family (We're mostly Hawks fans, then there are the Blues guys, and I'm starting to go really off the board as a Sens fan) and they can't stand it.

Speaking of the Hawks: you know the Bobby Clarke picture that's around here? Can somebody make that with Bill Wirtz, only...more severe? Like in addition to the guns, I want like, bombs and poison-tipped darts, and grenades, and everything.
