Squeenix Greatest Hits re-releases.

Recommended Posts

I think this has been well-known, but at any rate:

Square Enix U.S.A. announced that a number of Square Enix RPG titles will soon be part of Sony Computer Entertainment America's "Greatest Hits" program. The following top-selling RPGs from Square Enix U.S.A. will be available for under $20 (USD) this holiday shopping season:

FINAL FANTASY X (PlayStation 2)

KINGDOM HEARTS (PlayStation 2 - December)

FINAL FANTASY ANTHOLOGY (PlayStation)

FINAL FANTASY CHRONICLES (PlayStation)

VAGRANT STORY (PlayStation)

XENOGEARS (PlayStation)

Yeah...those...5.

I sold off my copies of Anthology and Chronicles since now I can get them new, complete, and cheaper! :)

Does anyone know if they're all out now or if they're coming soon? I think they're all mid-December.

Which of these is the one that has FFIV and Chrono Trigger? I don't want to buy it without protection, because I'm pretty sure it's unsafe to have all that ownage in one game.

Final Fantasy Chronicles is the one you're looking for.

Yup. Note that there's loading times (unless they fixed that up better, which I doubt). Also, FFIV is a translation of the FFIV Hard Type. It's more difficult but has an updated translation of the text. I've heard complaints about the music and the Mode 7 effects (which the PS1 can't do well).

Still, you won't have to worry about the battery burning out like you would for the SNES versions, and the average cost of each title is a mere 10 bucks this way.

I've played FFVI (part of Anthology), and the slowdown isn't as severe as I expected.

However, there's exclusive bonuses to the Chronicles/Anthlogy collections. I'm not sure if the bonus soundtrack CDs come with them, but you can unlock cool stuff when you beat the game. For example, I think in Trigger you can even watch each of the endings once you unlock them. Plus you can view the new cinemas and a bunch of other goodies.

I've yet to beat any of the titles (I'm about 1/3 though FFVI and 7/8 through Trigger), but I'm looking forward to the bonuses once I do. Of course, any progress is halted until I re-buy them.

I beat CT once and one of the new FMV scenes. There's also anime scenes in the actual game at certain points.

I'm really surprised Vagrant story is gonna be a greatest hits, I didn't think it sold that well (despite being a fantastic game).

Is the criteria 500,000 units sold or 1,000,000? I forget...

I think it's 500,000. I remember hearing that was about what Castlevania: SotN was up to only, but it is a Greatest Hits title. A lot of GH titles are million sellers, but not all are.

Although I don't get that either, because you only see them used marked up to $35-$45 by Gamespot and EB (although half.com is more reasonable), when they're supposed to be priced at 20 bucks.

Still, what took so long with these, exactly? There weren't really any new copies of these being made to sell new.

I think the requirement for GH on PSX is only 300,000. It's not very high.

I think the reason this took so long is that they didn't really just now reach it, it's just that Square knows about these games selling on Ebay and what not and knows the demand is there and so they went to Sony and requested it.

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but.....what's the difference between a 'Greatest Hits' title and a regular game [ie, FFX Greatest Hits, and just the usual FFX].

In any case, I'll prolly, hopefully, buy Kingdom Hearts. That game is soooo the ownage.

Unless a difference is clearly pointed out, none. It's just a re-issue of the game (i.e. they start manufacturing copies of an old game again and it goes back on the new game shelves) sold cheaper.

They also have that terribly ugly green bar down the side of the box and instruction manual which says "Greatest Hits" and then the instruction booklet and Disc are usually in Black and White instead of being full color.

Okay, that's what baffled me. It probably is a lot higher if you count the secondary marketplace.

*sigh*

I wish Castlevania Chronicles would be a GH, because I really, really want my Rondo of Blood already. However, I don't think they made enough for that to even be possible. :(

Also--yeah, I really hate the puke-green bars. At least the PS2 GHs look a lot nicer with the red. Still, Nintendo did it right for SNES, using the same basic box design, but with a ribbon declaring it was a million seller and the "Super Nintendo" logo would be in gold lettering.

Agreed. Even I, hater of nearly everything Square released in the past 5 years, loved it.
