MTV to produce 2004 Super Bowl halftime show

The Associated Press

Last Updated 6:25 p.m. PST Monday, December 8, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Corporate synergy is paying off for MTV. It will produce the halftime show for the 2004 Super Bowl airing on CBS.

The network and the cable channel are owned by Viacom. MTV produced the halftime show for the 2001 Super Bowl, which also aired on CBS and featured Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Nelly and Mary J. Blige.

"We plan on even more unexpected music performances that will go down in halftime history," Van Toffler, president of MTV and MTV2, said in a statement Monday. The performers were not announced.

America Online is the halftime sponsor.

The Super Bowl will be held Feb. 1 in Houston.

Well, I guess the debate of just how bad the halftime show this year will be has been settled.

Aerosmith is already Confirmed I believe.

Expect Ja Rule, The White Stripes and Xtina to flesh the halftime show out.

Uh...The Last MTV produced Halftime was Better then the fucking game.

not for me it wasn't..

I agree.

MTV is older than trees at this point and haven't been cool since the early 90's.

It'll probably be Clay Aiken and Hillary Duff singing with Beyonce and AeroSmith.

Um, ANYTHING that involves Britney, N'Synch, Nelly, and Aerosmith isn't better than a damned thing.

And ANYTHING that MTV does isn't better than a damned thing, either.

For reference I'll remind people that the 2001 Super Bowl was the Ravens vs Giants...

Theres nothing worse than waiting forever for the game to start and then having to wait another half an hour through Brittney Spears and co. singing to get the damn game going again. It could have been anyone performing and I would have been angry.

Since Viacom also owns WWE...or parts of it...

They should just have The Rock or John Cena cut a Halftime Promo on the football players.

If the Eagles make it, I won't give a rat's ass who does the halftime show. I wish the Bowl was actually in Philly though. Any pop star they put on stage would have their ass booed off, and possibly get smashed in the face with a battery.

Everybody's got opinions. That one was fine except for Britney's overproduced voice.

Anyways, you know that since this show goes around the world that they'll need artists who are known around the world. And that means Your Favourite Indy/Punk/Metal/Whatever Band isn't gonna cut it.

After owning the Bungles, RAY~! and his team are certainly on the right path.

The halftime shows usually suck, so I never expect much of them. I'm an Aerosmith fan, but I didn't like them sharing the stage with Britney and Nelly, or whoever that talentless cretin was. I will say, though, that Britney did more for Aerosmith T-shirts in 10 minutes than I've seen anyone do in all my 29 years.

Well if anyone could do it, I imagine she could.

Really though I'm not holding out much hope. Of course since I'm bouncing at a bar 10 minutes from the stadium and there's going to be a huge Miller Lite party in our parking lots I think I'm going to be too busy to give a crap about who's performing. Although I admit I still am an Aerosmith fan, so I would like to see them perform. Anyone else mentioned in the same breath as MTV will probably just make me gag.

Well, of course. When I think of the game of football, the first person that pops into my head is Clay Aiken ;)

I actually enjoyed the MTV Halftime Show a few years ago, but I doubt they'll be able to be as entertaining this time around. They'll go for the pop fluff in front of a testosterone-packed crowd, and hilarity will ensue.

My guess for the show: Aerosmith, the White Stripes, Beyonce, and possibly Missy Elliott (). And don't be surprised if they throw Kelly Osbourne into the mix, just to raise the suckitude up to the highest power.

I thought it was great when Destiny's Child was booed during the NBA finals in Philly. The one idiot wore a Lakers jersey and was surprised at the reaction.

Oh, and you're statement would be better if you put WHEN the Eagles make it, not if.

Well, since Beyonce is from Houston, it would make sense, so don't expect her to be performing.

Clay Aiken, they might do, to help draw in the non-traditional male audience, but as someone mentioned, Fox might pull some strings to prevent that.

Maybe we'll see a (sort of) reprise of the last MTV halftime, with Aerosmith + JT + Black Eyed Peas...
