Backstage News On Reaction To Heyman & Cena

Posted By Ashish on 12.09.03

The news from the locker room...

- Paul Heyman is said to be much more diplomatic with agents and talent backstage since returning to WWE TV. While he remains just a "creative consultant," he has definitely been involved in the creative process especially regarding his own character.

- WWE management remains very high on John Cena's look and charisma, but feel he has a lot to learn as a wrestler. Despite that, WWE plans to work around his average wrestling ability and push him as a hot act since they believe he can bring in good money now.

Cena should be pushed VERY SLOW. Give him the US title, let him run with that for awhile, let him get his wrestling skills up some more, then push him to the moon.

Maybe make his big grab of the World Title at next year's Summerslam, or possibly have him win a tournament for it.........

I think that the WWE thinks that it has it's next Hogan, it's next Austin, I daresay, it's next Rock. Cena brings charisma galore to all the kids who dig the rap act(he's funny, but I wouldn't ever buy a rap album he did), along with at least competant ring skills. They are going to give him the ever feared GOD PUSH and all us smart marks are going to feel screwed over when Benoit paralyzes himself and has no world title reign(unless they actually gve Benoit a program with Lesnar)(An apology for screwing this up before I looked at it again)

As much as i like Cena, it shows me how fucked up the WWE political system is when a homegrown talent gets preference over an "ECW or WCW " wrestler. RVD and Jericho were way over when they first join in the WWE and they didn't get any type of real push at all.

As much as I love Jericho/RVD, Cena has the total package. He's not a better wrestler than these guys, but he has the look, charisma, decent ring work and has the abillity to bring in a new crowd(ie. the rap/hip hop fans) which I know there are alot of. It's like the WWE found it's star player to bring into a new era. He's no Rock or Austin, but Cena may well be the face of this new era(him or Jericho). So if the WWE wants to push it's "homegrown talent" let them. It's not he bitch to get this push, like some wrestlers. I just hope WWE doesn't push him to soon like they did earlier this year.

John Cena is popular within wrestling. He's not going to bring in any new outside fans of rap and hip hop with his silly raps.

BET won't be plugging Cena and WWE anytime soon.

Cena's already had a right up in XXL(the current #1 hip hop mag in the U.S.) and has been on the number 1 hip hop station in America (Hot 97 out of New York). If they push him right he is going to be a huge draw. However most african american hip hop fans were already into wrestling because of The Rock. If they could somehow ante up the cash to get Eminem on the show the ratings would fucking go through the roof.

I thought Jericho had all of that. Am I the only one who think so?

Anywhoo...Cena was getting a monster push but the WWE did the old "lets see how he acts when he gets depushed" act that they did to RVD when he first came into the WWE. RVD never got that big push back though..hopefully Cena won't get screwed over either.

I think the reason he works is because he's something kids/teens would buy into. Just like Stone Cold brought in the demographic with beer drinking and middle fingers, Cena brings them in with his style and attitude. It may not get coverage on other channels, but kids will tell other kids and that will add to his popularity.

As far as him not being up to par wrestling-wise. Do they spend time training these guys or once they are up from OVW does the training end? I always here about how Fit Finlay works with the women but you never hear about the guys having anyone help them polish their skills. The hosses never seem to get better so it seems as if they are on their own.

Tom Pritchard apparantly helps them, but entire matches are choreographed these days, so who knows.

Oddly enough, friggin' ORTON got praised after he and Maven called a Raw Match on the fly, in the ring, a few weeks back.

"Allright, PUNCH! Okay, um... CLOTHESLINE! Uh, body- uh, BODYSLAM! STOMP! KICK! GET UP! Umm, er-uh... uh... RKO!"

Phew, that was great. Maven, I really think you and I have chemistry together."

Cena's ringskills are vastly underrated. In all of his high-profile matches (vs. Taker, Angle, Benoit) he sells really well, never gets lost, and does not blow spots. Only his match with Brock was a pretty bad looking match. He isn't that good in the ring, but he isn't that bad. He's actually better than most of the other rookies in the WWE.

Cena is a very competant, somewhat bland, in-ring worker. He will improve with time.

His popularity and charisma cannot be denied, though. He outpopped Benoit in their match together, he outpopped Angle in their match together. He's gonna be something special.

Oh yeah, because when WWE considers whether or not to push someone, their ringwork is a big factor. ;)
