Genesis/SNES Games

Recommended Posts

Man, things are getting personal up in here.

And everyone knows SNES blows Genesis out of the water.

So did your mom ;)

I think on the whole the Snes beat the Megadrive (genesis is such an ugly name) in terms of games but when you lock Sonic three onto Sonic and Knuckles, man you have yourself one hell of a game. The sonics and the treasure titles made the Megadrive worth buying.

I was hoping there'd be a mention of Eternal Champions. That game was the shit, but the Sega CD version (CINEKILL!!!~) was even better. Anyway, I had the Genesis and my little brother had the SNES. I played his console for Super Mario All-Stars(marks out a bit) and the MK sequels. Meanwhile he would play my machine for the sports games and Sonic games. I was never that concerned about graphics unless one version was VASTLY superior(read: MK), or about the sound because I would always use my own music. The system I played a certain game on usually hinged on which controller's layout was better for me on each game and the way that effected how the game was played.

Some random 16-bit thoughts:

- In the MK sequels, Friendships were a cute novelty, but Babalities were completely stupid. The only time they were entertaining was when you executed a Fatality on the Babality victim.

- I can't remember. but didn't the NBA Jam games' secret players differ between systems?

- I'm proud to say that I had SEGA CHANNEL!~ and it was fucking great. :headbang:

Oh, and, um... can somebody else own up to having Sega CD so that I don't feel so lonely? :(

Yeah the sega channel was years ahead of its time, you got a lot of crap but it was a great way to play games without leaving the house.

And yes I own a Sega CD, what better than snatcher?

I had a Mega CD and 32x - the Mushroom Gaming Tower of DOOM~!

Still better than the Jaguar CD - the DEVIL BOGSEAT OF DOOM~!

I owned a 32X. Aside from a halfway-decent version of Doom, it didn't have a lot to offer.

The Sega 32X: hey, at least it's not Virtua Boy!

It had that kick ass virtual fighter, a NBA JAM TE that was better than the console games, a MKII that owned the regualr 16 bit versions and Wrestlemania: The Arcade. Asses were kicked....faces were 0wned.

And if you are wondering, yes I had the mushroom of doom. I had that scottie pippen basketball game, SLam City, that had realtime video and you were playing street ball...yeah...it sucked...

MKII 32x wasn't as good as the SNES (I'll trust Sakura on this), WM wasn't as good as the Playstation version (but still alright).

The FMV games sucked, of course.

Metal Head could have been a great game if there was more technique and better level design.

Cosmic Carnage wasn't too good. Anyone remember that old Genesis title Cyborg Justice? It has some of the smoothest animation I've ever seen on the Genesis, and if it were optimized for the 6-button pad and tweaked, it would have been a fantastic title. CC makes me think of that game, although it isn't as good. Both were made in-house by Sega though.

WWF Raw...uh...had Kwang! And tag ropes! And a Raw sign!

Yeah, at one point I've had the Mushroom Tower of Doom. I've owned a 32X twice in the past, and I own a Sega CD occasionally (not at the moment).

As for why I'm so defensive of the Genesis, it's that it seems people completely dismiss the metric ****load of great exclusive games. I play the Genesis more today than my PS2.

Other than the babality/slicing blades glitch in the arcade version, what are you talking about?

Nope. Although I believe the early versions of NBA Jam for SNES had Charles Barkley in it, but he was yanked from all later versions.

And the Konami titles, and Landstalker, Beyond Oasis, most of the Sega-made stuff--Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage (greater than the SNES' crappy Final Fight games), the Shining Force games, etc.

Don't sell it short. :P

The SNES version of MKII had better sound, but I would go with the 32x version overall.

I bought the 32x JUST to play Virtu FIghter. The sega cd/32x games (Like Slam City) would all kick ASS for about 2 hours before all of the video just became too damn repeditive and boring( and Scottie Pippen never missed and I couldn't beat the game...fuckers).

And Cosmic Carnage...ugh...I liked it for all of 10 minutes but I only paid 2.99 for it so I didn't feel ripped off.

I like Metal Head though. Very good game IMO that could have been great, but they were still toying with the hardware at the time.

In what way does the 32X port of MK II own the SNES one? I have never understood the hype for this port(or the Saturn port, for that matter). 32X MK II is basically the Genesis port but STILL not as good as SNES.

The sound is better, but is still weaksauce(still missing most of Kahn's taunts, music is still nothing like arcade).

The graphics are the same, but with more colors....so it looks like crap, it's just more colorful.

Gameplay is still messed up, with the same screwed up collision detection for mid air strikes.

Goro's Lair, the intro pictures and the prematch pictures are in, but it's still missing many little details(like ending pictures, win poses cut, Kahn's death scene, the cast of characters in the credits).

The only thing I'd give 32X over SNES is the intro.

Other than the babality/slicing blades glitch in the arcade version, what are you talking about?

You can do all kinds of stuff to the baby, Baraka's blades is just the most famous. You can do a babality after the first Babality. You can do a Friendship. You can do just about anything.

mk2baby1.jpg

It's only in arcade 2.1 though, so who knows what they're talking about with the home ports.

This is true.

And is Cyborg Justice the one-on-one fighter where you customised your robots, and you could rip off each otehr's legs/arms/weapons and use them on your own cyborg? That game was FUCKING ACE but no-one would ever play it with me because I kept stealing all their shit.

I don't think so. It's a side scrolling beat 'em up, but there's a duel mode. You could customize your robot and I believe in Arcade mode you could steal enemy torsos, but I don't think in the Duel mode you can do that.

You're probably thinking of it but also confusing it with another game as well. Still, it's a pretty cool game. Shame it comes so close to being really good, but falls short because of control issues.

I'm just saying the cream of the crop. Streets of Rage and Shining force can’t touch the Sonic and Treasure titles. Even games like El Viento, Vectorman, Comix zone, Bonanza Bros, Ecco the dolphin, Toejam and Earl and micromachines 2 smoke those titles. Bare knuckle/Steets of rage 2 is a damn good game but the other two kind of suck when I play them now.

Dude landstalker! I completley forgot about that game. As for the Konami titles the only ones I cared for on the megadrive were Contra Hard Corps, Rocket knight adventures and maybe Busters hidden treasure (ISS was good but the snes verison was just simply better).

Uh--I disagree. I personally think after Gunstar Heroes, many of the Treasure titles were vastly overrated. Besides, we're in the sticky territory of saying one game in one genre is better than another game in another genre, when both are considered near the peak of their respective genres.

Even games like El Viento, Vectorman, Comix zone, Bonanza Bros, Ecco the dolphin, Toejam and Earl and micromachines 2 smoke those titles.

Haven't played it, good but no, CZ had some control issues, haven't played it, BOOOORING, cool but the second one was far better, didn't play it.

Bare knuckle/Steets of rage 2 is a damn good game but the other two kind of suck when I play them now.

Yeah, but they smoke any of the Final Fights. 3 wasn't as good as 2 but still was a good game. SoR1 was pretty good, but yeah, the 2nd one was best.

Contra Hard Corps...that game hates me so much.

RKA was awesome, and an exclusive. I heard the two Sparksters are different, but I only have the Genesis version. Haven't found the SNES one yet.

Buster's Hidden Treasure?

As for Sonic--1's fun but doesn't hold up so well. Once you get past Green Hill Zone, the whole speed aspect is forgotten and it's a normal platformer. You can't go too fast after that or certain death awaits you.

Sonic 2 is generally considered the best in the series overall. I'd almost agree, but I hate Metropolis Zone too damn much. Sonic 3&Knuckles is basically a bunch of extra levels tacked onto 3, but I really like it. I hate Sandopolis Act 2 though.

By the way, where's the Ristar love?

The "Illusion" Mickey titles?

Dont know what to say, lets agree to disagree then (you sir are out of your mind if you think that ANY of the games you mentioned can come even close to something like Gunstar Heroes ;) )

I meant the toejam and earl games and Ecco is not boring! Gorgeous animation, a blend of puzzle platform gameplay complemented by an eeire soundtrack.

Disagree. Minus the soundtrack Final fight two IMO is better than SOR1 and sure as hell better than 3. Shame snes owners never got a good final fight 1 port. (Final fight guy is eh).

Buster's Hidden Treasure?

Sparkster on the snes is kind of a mix of the two Megadrive games.

And Busters Hidden Treasure is a tiny toon game made by Konami, not the best game in the world but one of my guilty pleasures.

Ristar is like Dynamite Headdy and Sonic's inbred child.

I'll talk about the sonic games after I take this call.

Uh, no. Personally, I enjoyed Ristar more. OMG SACKRILIDGE I INDRECTLY DISSED A TREASURE GAME!! TREASURE Iz g0d! TREASURE Iz g0d!!

Don't compare apples to oranges. I'm talking about games at the peak of their genre. You can easily say that, for instance, Mario Kart is a better game than one of Acclaim's mediocre licensed platform games, but when you're talking about two good games in different genres, it's moot and crazy to compare.

What about people who don't like the style of game Gunstar is? Even in that case I doubt Gunstar will change their mind.

I meant the toejam and earl games and Ecco is not boring! Gorgeous animation, a blend of puzzle platform gameplay complemented by an eeire soundtrack.

You must mean Ecco 2, because I thought the first was a snoozer. I haven't played Tides of Time though.

Disagree. Minus the soundtrack Final fight two IMO is better than SOR1 and sure as hell better than 3. Shame snes owners never got a good final fight 1 port. (Final fight guy is eh).

I liked SOR2 a lot, and although not as good, I liked SOR3 quite a bit as well. SOR1 is last of course, but SOR2 is better than Final Fight, and SOR3 is better than Final Fight 3. I think the Final Fights just got worse from 1 to 2 to three.
