What classes are you taking...

Recommended Posts

This is sprung from the what's your major thread.

What classes are you taking next semester?

I have:

COMM 153 Intro to Broadcasting - I always avoided this class because it is early in the morning. I've been told it is the same stuff that is in Intro to Comm and Mass Media in Society.

COMM 395 Radio Production II - I'm taking Radio I now and it is a fun course. My Prof is a great teacher, and he'll be teaching the next one which is good. I don't want to be in the radio business, but I have to take the course.

ENGL 312 Writ Great Books II - This class was full this semester, so I went to the class and asked the Prof if I could take it. He said I could, but I missed the two week deadline to enter class. Plus I have to take it.

ENGL 365 Scriptwriting - I always wanted to take this class because I want to make movies. I have tons of ideas, but I don't know how to write a proper screenplay. Plus I have to take it.

FILM 106 Film Classic Comedies - I had a spot left, so I decided to fill it with an elective. Plus I took Film 105 which gave me new looks into movies and I enjoyed it.

I only have 3 classes left for core requirements, two natural science courses, 1 humanties course and 1 social science course. Other than that, I only have electives left.

I'm three days into my break and I'm already talking about classes. Damn you, Mole.

Joyce's Ulysses: A seminar for my English-Modern Studies concentration. My favorite professor is teaching this, and it's time to finally rock that James Joyce action. All Ulysses, all the time.

Aesthetics and Politics: An English Criticism seminar, with a focus on the relationship between, well, aesthetics and politics in literature, music, and various arts.

American Writers in Paris: Another English seminar, but more of a fun, novel-based one. It's basically covering the like of Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and their contemporaries writing overseas in the 1920's.

Mass Media and American Politics: Politics course. The name pretty much says it all.

Viewing America 1945- : A mixed media history course I've been meaning to take for a while. It's contemporary American history from the end of World War II to the present, focusing on newsreels, newscasts, and films as artifacts of how people saw history while it was happening.

And, for a sixth class, I may apply for another advanced fiction workshop, if only because John Casey (Spartina and The Half-Life of Happiness, among other great books) is teaching it.

Right now, just one actually. A field placement class for my Education major. I'll be volunteering in a school as part of the class, while we learn how to handle ourselves in a work enviroment as teachers/counselors/etc. Not sure if I'm going to take any others, since I don't need many more credits to get my Associates.

Introduction to Literary Study = The first in my few required major classes. My advisor says that I am starting this earlier than most.

British Literature to 1800 = Time to get medieval on they asses.

American Government = One of my Gen Ed requirements. Meets once a week, and sometimes not at all. Huzzah!

Western Civ = Requirement. I figured I'll ace that shizza.

Western Civ 2

New Testament Survey

Introduction to Evangelism

Philippians

And the labs that go with being on a Performing Arts Team.

Not a bad semester. Probably a little easier than this one, assuming Philippians doesn't get too Hermaneutical.

Geology 100- Dumb people science!! This, and the Astronomy lab class I just finished are essentially science for people who suck at it, like myself.

Math 103- Concepts in Algebra- Dumb people Math. Same deal as Geology. I need 6 credits of math to graduate, and I nearly fail every math class I take, so I'm taking the lowest level classes.

English 235- Sports in American Film and Literature- Yeah, it sounds dumb, but it fulfills a ton of credits. It counts as an Arts/Humanities class, an upper level English class, and a Lit class. Plus, it should at least be interesting.

CMJ 103- Public Speaking- Stupid class required for my major I haven't got around to taking yet. Whoops.

CMJ 337- News Copy Writing- Just like it sounds. Required for my major, and should be fairly easy as I got an A in the first part of this class this sem.

Come to the University of Virginia, where our English department is ridiculously overfunded and overstaffed with really frickin' great professors! I love it here, and that's why I came here. Sure, they don't have nearly enough Econ professors, but I ganked that shit in high school and had no designs on taking a single math or science class ever again. Books and books alone for me, with some history, government, and philosophy on the side.

I've got such a generic schedule it makes me want to cry, but that's what I get for not having a major :(

English 244 - Analysis of the novel. Reading old books and examining iconoclasts and symbolism and stuff.

Math 102 - Dumb people math. Better than my last semester of Math 100, which I took even though I knew everything but I failed the entrance exam and they made me take it. It's not even worth credit.

History 108 - America from 1877-Present.

Political Science 101 - American Government. Should be a breeze because I took it in High School.

Health 101 - Easiest class ever.

Where do you go? If you can pull all that off, my hat is off to you. Some of my professors think that after you get past the basic stuff, you shouldn't take more than three (four if you're feeling ballsy) high-end classes in a semester

My classes

Math major: Intro to Real Analysis I, Fundamental Concepts of Algebra (i.e. Intro to Group and Ring Theory, so as to not confuse it with the low end Algebra classes)

Econ major: Sports Econ (looking forward to this one), International Business and Econ

General Credits (still have some of those to clear out): Intro to Astronomy

that kicks some serious ass right there, i envy you.

they've got a 'ulysses' class here next semester but i can't take it, because a) i've already got all my upper-level electives done, and b) i don't have the prerequisites for it anyway. but i'm seriously considering just sitting in on the class without enrolling, just to check it out.

anyway, my schedule:

american lit since 1865--stupid, pissy little freshman-level elective that i need to graduate. i am not happy about having to take this class, but i can ace these kinds of classes in my sleep now.

history of rock & roll--see above.

dramatic writing I--counts toward my film studies major. i write all the damn time anyway, so i might as well get credit for it.

film theory--required for the film studies major. academically, this is the area of film i'm most interested in, & it's being taught by one of my favorite teachers. i can't wait.

so my classes are all either ridiculously fun, ridiculously easy, or both.

Gender and Communication to fulfill the last required COMM course

Statistics to fulfill that last math requirement (provided I can sweet talk my algebra instructor into giving me approval to get into the class)

Women and Gender In the New South--upper level history course to fulfill my last history requirement and my upper level elective requirement

Communicating in Business

Provided I can get ok'd to take stats, I'll be graduating in May (thank God), so I get to do some major ass kissing to my Algebra instructor to get him to approve me to take Stats. Stupid math requirements.

assuming Philippians doesn't get too Hermaneutical.

uhmm...i'm pretty sure that only made sense to you, SP...

True.

It basically breaks the book and passages down bit by bit for contextual, historical, cultural, and theological analyzation.

Ok, I'll elaborate.

It's not the GEOLOGY part that's the dumb people science class, so much as it's the Geology 100 part. There are certainly upper level geo classes that would probably melt my brain, but this class is essentially the dumbed-down, "rocks for jocks" version.

Believe me, up here (Maine) classes like Geology and Forrestry are certainly serious majors. But they also offer dumb people science versions for people like me, who have no plans to go into any science field.

So there ya go. Good luck with the Paleontology thing, cuz its a lot more difficult than anything I'm doing.

No I'm still an undergrad. Actually this is my best, favorite semester yet. A nice big offering of pure math with minimal applied stuff and no arts/humanities requirements left.

Humanities 203: Literature & Ethics (This SHOULD be crosslisted with Philosophy, but isn't. I'm a PHI/PSC double major, and I've focused a lot of my coursework on Ethics because it's a subject that interests me. The grad student teaching the course also TA'd a course I took this semester, so I know she knows what she's doing.

Philosophy 252: Topics in Eastern Philosophy (I needed one more PHI class at the 200 level or above, and the instructor's supposed to be incredible.)

Political Science 103: Politics Abroad (Needed a course, filled the spot.)

Political Science 313: Voting & Public Opinion (Much the same, and with the added benefit that I'm interested in the material.)

Political Science 339: International Law (See above.)

Friggin' GEs:

EASC 150: East Asian Societies- Wraps up my social sciences requirement. Hopefully, we won't focus too much on how the white man screwed things up.

LING 110: In A Word- Basically an intro to linguistics course. Might be cool.

After this, I'll only have my science principles requirement and my Writing 340 requirement. I'll do my whole language requirement at a JC this summer.

I'm in high school, so aside from the full-year academics (English 12CP, Psychology CP, Statistics CP), here are the electives I'm taking next semester (or at least the ones I can remember; I didn't exactly put much thought at all into this).

Creative Writing

Visual Communications

Recording Techniques

...uhhh...that's all I can remember. I got, like, one other, but I'll be fucked if I know what it is.
