Currently watching the History of the Triple Crown 89-92. I stopped it after I watched Tsuruta/Tenryu 6-5-89. This match rocks, next up I get a clipped match of Barry Windham vs. Jumbo. Even though it's clipped it should still be decent.

Benoit vs Alex Wright WCWSN 96ish -- A little different than other matches as this turns more into a fight than a juniors match. This was a match in the mixed up "tournament" for the WCW lightheavyweight title.

 

That tournament was more disorganized than...something really disorganized.

Wasn't that "double elimination"? There was no bracket. It seemed like Dean Malenko had 12 matches in the tournament while Ohtani(sp?) had one. And didn't Brad Armstrong actually eliminate Malenko from the tourney? They never announced when it would end. Malenko just seemed to show up with the belt after he beat Ohtani on Worldwide rendering the whole tournament concept pretty useless.

Something like that. They had (I think) Benoit and Ohtani wrestle the finals before the tourney even started, then they just did random matches and then aired Benoit/Ohtani. Or something like that.

 

I'm re-watching HHH/HBK right now. NO WAY is it ****3/4 or even ****+.

Ohtani beat Benoit for the cruiserweight belt in Japan on 3/20/96 in an awesome match.

If memory serves me right I believe the winner of the "WCW tournament" would face the winner of the New Japan tournament. Something like that. There was no real tourney. Benoit just faced Ohtani in the finals of the tournament which I believe was the only match to that time over in Japan which had anything at all to do with the cruiser belt. Listening to the commentary on Nitro during the Benoit vs Eddie match and commentary during WCWSN only leads to confusion since nothing makes sense. And of course, nothing did make sense.

 

Ohtani didn't defend the belt on Nitro but he did on Worldwide against Dean Malenko shortly after Ohtani had beaten Benoit for the belt. Sweet match too.
