Do Meltzer, Keller, Scherer, etc. have day jobs?

Recommended Posts

Like I said - I know I'll be ridiculed for asking such a dumb question, but...

Do the premiere wrestling journalists, i.e. Scherer, Meltzer, Keller, Alvarez, etc. have day jobs, or do they make a living on their newsletters? I'm pretty sure that they must do something else besides writing newsletters to make money, because I can't imagine - even with the number of subscribers they must have - that they could be able to pull in suitable salaries that they could live on. It's been bugging me, though, and I'm interested in a definitive answer...I mean, they update their sites and write newsletters so often...

I have vacation now, and I'm balancing doing a bunch of projects (editing the casual transcripts of my interviews with GQ Money/Lee Handsome into something understandable; an extensive feature on the roots, history, and legacy [or lack thereof, whichever you prefer] of XPW; writing questions for interviews with Johnny Webb and former-SWF promoter and mainstream acting star Verne Langdon; working on an ENORMOUS [that probably doesn't do it justice] retrospective looking back on the histories and legacies of both ECW and Viking Hall, both of which to be posted midway through 2004; writing a fantasty card for the next CZW show; working on an ROH NOTG video review; not to mention having a life outside of wrestling, and keeping up with school work) and I'm having some difficulty even doing that...these guys are in their 20s, 30s, 40s, probably even older for some of them, so they must have mortgages, wives, bills, etc....how do they deal with it all and still manage to update their web sites constantly and produce newsletters?

I know Bob Barnett is a lawyer, besides doing the wrestling stuff, but what about the other guys?

Any help/info would be appreciated.

Wrestling journalism is their day-job.

Bryan Alvarez is a wrestler though.

Meltzer makes six figures off of the newsletter. He doesn't have another job. He's a full time journalist. He has around 1,000 subscribers with an annual subscription running $92.00, so you can do the math there. Also, factor in media appearances and the money he makes from the radio show, and he's doing just fine.

Meltz does just fine. He was doing better when he had the daily radio show, but he still makes pretty good money. Also figure in, on top of those sales, tons of one-time sales of special issues, advertising, wrestling gold dvds, etc. Scherer: I don't know. Keller: I don't know. Mitchell is a teacher during the day.

I think the fact that Meltzer has a journalism degree is what has helped him more than anything because it legitimizes his work.

Bryan Alvarez is a wrestler though.

This would be as good a place as any to ask if anyone has the Super Chico Dvd's?

A question I've been pondering the answer of for awhile...I avidly await any responses to it.

Let me say this, though...I do remember reading like two years ago that McMahon purposefully let out some false info about wanting to rehire Lawler (which he eventually did) in order to find out who was leaking info to the media. I don't know if this was true or not, but I did read it on the net. Take it for what it's worth.

Wouldn't surprise me, for Vince to pull a stunt like that.

Sometimes Meltzer or Keller let us know what was discussed on private meetings. If any special event takes place backstage, it will be reported the following day. How in the hell can they do that ?

Well I know Meltzer's talked about his girlfriend before and he has a kid.

He's not your stereotypical internet fat wrestling geek. Have you seen the guy? He's fucking jakked.

Yes...Unlike the IWC poster boy Scott Keith...Meltz appears almost visually equal to Vince in Size.

Also...Meltz and Vince have a respect relationship because Vince knows Meltz is a important factor in WWE.

I remember the dating site picture he had. The guy was a ripped hoss and a half.

He is ugly, but hey....who am I to judge? But then again there are some girls that are like "Look at that body! I don't care what your face looks like!" Just like there are some guys like that to girls......

Meltzer GETS most of his info from Vince or JR as far as the financial projections, future booking plans and changes in style. As far as the information like backstage fights and who has heat and gossip, that tends to come from the wrestlers themselves.

I'm fairly confident that t he Observer subscription number is a lot more than 1,000.

As am I. It was a conservative estimate. It does show, however, that if he had at least 1,000 subscribers, he'd make close to six figures.

That's also assuming everyone subscribes on the annual rate, as the shorter subscriptions cost more.

I can assure you that - while they may have mutual respect for one another - Meltzer does NOT directly converse with JR and/or Vince.

I hate to bust your bubble, but Vince, and even more so, JR, talk to Meltzer on a regular basis. Meltzer has referenced specific phone calls he has had with Vince in the past and has even said that he talks to him regularly, and Dave has often been criticized for not criticizing JR in cases where he probably should have. JR has been a guest of his on WOL in the past and has done numerous interviews with both sheets, even to a point where he was once fired for it I believe.

You just evidenced a conversation between Meltzer and Vince. You made my point for me.

As someone who is currently going after a journalism degree, I can say it certainly helps but it isn't necessarily required if you're looking to enter that profession.

I may be wrong, but I severely doubt Vince would ever call up an internet journalist and ask for his opinion on his angle and converse with him. He's revealing his future plans to him. That's bad business. Vince knows better. I may be wrong, but I really doubt they've ever talked to one another directly.
