Firefly on DVD

Oh yeah, and here's a message from Cappy.

Nathan Fillion posted the following message on the Official Firefly Forum:

Hello, all. It has been awhile. I hope everyone is well, and flyin’ under Alliance radar. As I’m sure you are all aware, the movie is a go and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief with the same lungful I’ve been holding since cancellation. Let us in this time of celebration not forget all the hard work that has made this possible. Not the least of which is the incredible support of you, the fans. Stay rabid. Also, allow me to take a moment to tell you that Joss is a dirty fighting bastage and will kick anyone in the nuts to get this beautiful baby on the screen. With the quickness and strength of Tiger Kung-Fu, and the grace and magic of Dragon Kung-Fu, he has made this happen for us. All of us. Now that the movie is for certain, I find myself fulfilled and lacking of much wanting. But I have come up with this: In much the same fashion of your Shindigs and Firefly viewing parties, go to the movie. Bring a friend. Bring two friends. Bring people to the movies. Lots of them. Now, I realize that movie going is an expensive endeavor nowadays (Alliance plot), so in an effort to keep it affordable- BRING YOUR OWN SNACKS.

Keep flyin’, Nathan "Cappy" Fillion

PS Alan Tudyk says: See "I Robot and Dodgeball". My birthday just passed.

The dream ends quickly.

Mutant Enemy President Chris Buchanan posted the following message on the Offical Firefly Forum to set the record straight on some of the news and rumors surrounding 'Serenity.'

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Browncoats:

I haven't checked in lately because I've been far too busy on the BDM! Somehow, I think you all will forgive my absence... the movie is going to be shiny beyond belief.

That being said, word has reached me that somebody has been posting here and elsewhere, shall I say, dubious "facts" about SERENITY. I'd like to set the record straight on a couple of them:

(1) SERENITY. The movie will be shooting in bee-u-ti-ful Los Angeles and thereabouts. Sorry to all you folks in upstate NY and Vancouver. Did anyone think that Governor Ahnold would let such a valuable film franchise leave the state? I think not!

(2) FANMAIL. Please do not use any of our actors' home addresses that may be posted somewhere on the WWW. While I understand that it's well intentioned mail, it's really not cool and I personally think it's a invasion of privacy. Feel free to send mail to any of our actors at the ME address: P.O. Box 900, Beverly Hills, CA 90213 and we will get it to them. Really.

(3) ACTORS. All of our FIREFLY actors were invited to return for SERENITY, and we plan to have all of them in the movie, period. As has been noted elsewhere: deals, schedules and contracts take time and until the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, it ain't official. God may be in the details, but the Devil is clearly in the fine print. I'm optimistic that the full crew will be on board.

(4) Official Posting Board. I'm in discussions with the folks at Universal about the SERENITY site and board. No current time frame, but hopefully, we won't have any downtime between here and there. BTW, STEVE, thanks for the movie folder. You are truly a Browncoat and a prince among moderators!

That's all I want to set straight for now. If I killed all the rumors, speculation and potential spoilers on the OB, there would be nothing left to talk about except politics and religion. And God knows we don't want to go there! ;)

Best,

Buchanan

Another sort of Cappy??

Nathan Fillion (Caleb)

Nathan has signed on to head up one of Fox’s new cop shows, "Hollywood Division" - it was about time Fox got in on the forensics action. Of course, they give it the usual Fox twist - the cops in this division go undercover at a Hollywood High School, as well as the seedy underbelly of the famed LA district. So, it’s like The OC mixed with NYPD Blue!!

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=4449

This is a REALLY interesting thread debating the origin of the Reavers. It's long, so I'll give some of the theories.

1)They were original (failed) test subjects of the Blue Hand Men.

2)They were genetically-altered soldiers during the Civil War between the Independants and the Alliance.

3)They were regular soldiers during the war who went mad because of it:

"The “predecessors of River” idea is an interesting one, but there is nothing in the actual series to support it. So far, there are two possibilities that are based on what is in the series.

1. The Reavers are exactly what we've been told they are

2. The Reavers are former Alliance soldiers tortured into madness by the Independents.

In Safe, there is a possible allegory for this. The young River talks about a pretend Alliance group that is cut off by the Independents. The Alliance members resort to cannibalism

Mal knows more than most about the Reavers.

When the survivor in Bushwacked mutilates himself, the Alliance officer says he hasn't seen that kind of torture since the war and he says it with disgust. He is accusing Mal, who he knows to be a former Independent of doing it.

This idea of the Reavers and Mal’s possible knowledge or involvement in it fits nicely with Whedon's writing style; wanting to surprise the viewer with the unexpected, main characters with dark backgrounds, and the theme of redemption. When Mal says," Nothing worse than a monster thinks he's right with god", what if he knows this because he's also talking about himself?

4) They are neo-pirates.

Seems to me that Reavers are just pirates. The dictionary defines reavers as those who rob and despoil. Sounds like pirates to me. Many pirates, both current and historical, have the habits of torture and leaving no survivors behind. Most are not really expecting an old age pension, so they're not too worried about long-term health or sanitation. Also, contemporary stories about pirates usually exaggerate their ferocity and savagery, hence the flesh-eating and skinning. Many pirates recruited from their captives.

How did they originate? Same as pirates here on earth-that-will-be-was. Privateers or militia crews who kept on plundering after the war. Mutineers who took over a ship and went raiding. Crooked captains who found a like-minded crew and moved from petty theft to piracy. There's probably pirate moons out there with supplies and doxies, just like in the Carribean in the 17th/18th centurys.

5) They are "Men who went mad on the edge of space" (the explanation Mal gives).

6)They are members of a cult, driven by a dark force.

7)They have negative reactions to drugs which were supposed to help them endure deep space

modified by a disease or drug that is transmitted between Reavers which enhances strength while reducing pain reception, something like PCP. Imagine it as a drug taken by deep spacefarers originally used to combat the effects of low-gravity, but which has since been outlawed and obsolete by the use of “gravity drives” and a discovered side-effect of being addictive and causing mental illness.

1)They were original (failed) test subjects of the Blue Hand Men.

I like the idea of having Blue Sun and the Reavers connected, kinda like Blade 2 where you had the super vampires who were actually created by the regular vampires. It falls in-line with Joss's storytelling, as the same Frankensteinian concept of the created destroying the creator was used (more literally) with Adam in Season 4 of Buffy. However, I think this works better with #2, rather than on it's own. Why would Blue Sun let them go and why would they produce so many? They're supposed to be smarter than that.

2)They were genetically-altered soldiers during the Civil War between the Independants and the Alliance.

I think this one has the most potential, but it's pretty cliched. It explains why they can fly ships and have intelligence, but are also killing machines. It also explains why Blue Sun couldn't contain them. The problem arises in the details. How many Reavers did they "make"? What was the turning point? When did it begin? Why are they on the outside of space?

3)They were regular soldiers during the war who went mad because of it:

This is pretty solid. I've wondered why/how Mal and Zoe know so much about them, despite Reavers never leaving survivors. The connections in the post on FFF.net made some for some compelling reading. It does, however, put Mal and Zoe in a really bad light if they (the Independants) were the ones who 'created' the Reavers through torture. It would also work if Book was really a former Alliance member, where Mal would have to forgive him because Book forgives him.

4) They are neo-pirates.

This works in the way Joss has been establishing Firefly as a pseudo-historical piece of the Civil war. It doesn't really explain the extreme the reavers go to, however.

5) They are "Men who went mad on the edge of space" (the explanation Mal gives).

I don't particularly like this explanation, but I imagine it wasn't the one they were sticking with. Infact, it was probably purposefully bad just to throw a twist in it in the future.

6)They are members of a cult, driven by a dark force.

Blah. Mal says they don't of theology. Could be a lie, but I doubt it.

7)They have negative reactions to drugs which were supposed to help them endure deep space

This is a pretty interesting one and it falls in line with the storyline version. "Drugs" however, is a bit weak. Nothing as psychological as the other theories.

I was thinking it would be interesting if the Reavers were actually just normal men, not men driven mad. Former Independants who were still fighting the war. It makes sense with the the "haven't seen this torture since the war" statement.

Plus when in Serenity, they say that the Reavers get further and further out each year. This could work in the sense that they have started to drum up support in the desolate border planets and are increasing in numbers.

It would explain why the Reavers have and are able to operate the outdated equipment.

They don't leave survivors, because they can't have anyone who isn't onboard with the plan learning of the growing rebellion. And they figure they might as well send a message in the brutality of the killings that everyone should stay the fuck out of their area.

I think it would also lead to an interesting storyline when we finally meet the Reavers and they turn out to be browncoats. Will Mal and Zoe return to the fight? Will there be a rift among the rest of the crew? Mal and Inara? It seems like a way to keep the two big storyarcs seperate, but yet tie everyone in (Alliance and Blue Sun will have to find out someday). It would also let us see how far Mal has come and also let us wonder if he was actually fighting the good fight to begin with?

That would be the biggest Bait and Switch in the shows history (and that's saying something!) if the Reavers were finally revealed, after all this hype about them being savages and not human, as being regular people.

*Everyone is in the kitchen, both doors are locked*

Wash: Oh god, oh god, oh god, OH GOD, they're boarding the ship!!!

Kaylee: Cap'n, what are we going to do??!

Mal: I... I don't know...

Jayne: Hell, we're gonna fight! ... Right?

Zoe: Cap'n?

Mal: The end... it's here... no more flyin...

Jayne: Ah hell!

Zoe: You don't believe that sir, do you?

Mal: I dunno what to believe anymore.

*Reavers start pounding on the door*

Inara: Mal, DO SOMETHING!

Jayne: He's too scared to do anything gorramit. I'm in charge here and I say this, when they come in shoot'em! I don't want to be eaten to death by no good stinkin reavers.

River: Would you like some tea with that? Oh no, thank you, my mouth is full...

*Jayne looks at River, then looks at Simon*

Jayne: Would you shut her up?!

Wash: OH GOD THEY'RE BREAKING THROUGH!

*Doors bust open*

*a cloud of smoke enters the room*

*4 men wearing silk vests, puffy shirts, dress pants with a pocketwatch hanging out enter the room*

Mal: Huh...

*fade to black*

Wash: Uh... they're here?

Jayne: They don't look so...

Simon: They look british.

Zoe: British?

Simon: Yeah, British - former people of the earth-that-was; they were smug and pretentious and ate really bad food... I thought they died out a long time ago.

Reaver #1: Well, not quite.

Reaver #2: No, not at all, actually. We're quite alive.

Reaver #3: And Civil.

Reaver #1: Quite, quite.

Reaver #3: Mmm, yes, quite.

Jayne: So you ain't gonna eat us?

*Reavers laugh*

Reaver #2: Oh dear old boy, of course not! We have never eaten people and I don't think we'd start here with you.

Reaver #1: No, there's hardly any meat on any of your bones anyways...

*Reavers laugh*

*Crew looks dumbfounded*

Gina Torres, who recently was a guest speaker at the Sci-Fi Slam convention in Pasadena, confirmed that all original cast members from the TV series will appear in the Firefly movie 'Serenity.' This bit of news is a relief to Browcoats everywhere because of persistent rumors that Ron Glass, who plays Shepard Book, might be missing from the movie cast.

While this isn't an official confirmation from Universal nor Mutant Enemy, rencent news, including this one, seem to indicate that the full cast is indeed onboard for the movie that'll go into production in June at Universal.

Thanks go to MALSGAL who posted a message concerning this matter on the FFF.NET message board.

11.7.02

Hey there Brown Coats-

So this entry will be written by our own Capt’n: Nathan Fillion! Take it away Nathan…

Ooo… This is so cool. I’ve finally made it, the weblog! How I’ve dreamed of this moment- and yet, now I feel tremendous pressure to be clever like Kelly. How does she do it?

We are hard at work on “Heart of Gold,” which holds much excitement and some implied nudity! I am particularly excited because it will be our first glimpse of such technologies as a true laser pistol and a hovercraft. Carey has once again outdone himself with his design of the craft, and I was sure to get a personal tour of it during construction.

Consistent with previous episodes, our guest cast this week is simply amazing. Melinda Clarke plays the lovely and sultry Nandi, and Fredric Lane has joined us as the bastardly Ranse Burgess- the man you’ll love to hate. Also on board this week is an old friend and Soap Opera alumnus Kimberly McCollough. Soap fans will remember her from her stint on General Hospital.

There were some questions on the boards, and Kelly asked if I would be interested in responding. I said I was scared, but she said she would hold my hand. (So, my plan worked!) I know for a fact that you folks don’t realize how very indispensable Kelly is around here. She has REAL POWER. If you want something done, you talk to Kelly.

Do we read the posts? I do. When I have spare time at work, I’ll raid the office for computer time. (I don’t have Internet access at home. Don’t ask. It’s a thing.) I particularly enjoy when folks enjoy the same scenes for the same reasons that I do. Or when I read that what I was trying to impart on screen was understood by viewers. Thank God! I look most forward to Kelly’s posts. I read them, imagining how great it would be to have the scoop on the everyday comings and goings on my favorite shows, the antics on set, inside jokes and so forth. I feel it speaks to the feeling of family and camaraderie that is present here. Something I feel it helps us put out a better show every episode.

Will Kelly appear in an episode? YES!!! She makes the cutest cameo in “Ariel!”

You really want to know about my underwear? Well, nothing special folks. Same as every other man out there. They are old, got holes, and worn through to the point of transparency. I occasionally buy new ones but I never throw any away. If a man says he throws out his underwear, he is lying. It’s as simple as that. They don’t get trashed, they just sometimes fall off or ignite.

Thanks, guys! This was a blast. As always- FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS MISS FIREFLY. Spread the word. Have a party. Make ‘em watch. They’ll thank you.

Yours ‘till Jayne learns manners,

Nate

I'm diggin this site on a bittersweet level.

ON ‘ARIEL’

By Jose Molina

Hello, everyone --

I’ve been asked by our cyberfriends at Fox to pitch in with an article detailing how “Ariel” came to life. So here I am. About to detail.

Cairo, 1843. Wait, that’s wrong.

Santa Monica, September of 2002. Yeah, that’s better. To quote a famous dead guy, I was nervous. Very, very dreadfully nervous. I’d been a fan of Buffy and Angel and the whole Mutant Enemy camp for years, and this was my first shot at showing the best writers in television that I didn’t suck. Still waiting for confirmation on that one. Um... guys?

So, it started with an idea from Joss: he wanted to do a story where Simon hired the crew for a heist. The rest was up for grabs. But since the folks around the office didn’t take kindly to my random grabbing, I decided it was best for everyone if I worked at home.

After approaching the story from a few different angles, the staff and I finally landed on a take we liked. I pitched it to executive producer Tim Minear, who in typical Tim fashion said “That’s great! What else ya got?” He was kidding. (I think.) We spent the next couple of days hammering out the details, then rolled on over to the Paramount lot to pitch our ideas to Joss, who was in the middle of playing spin the bottle with David Boreanaz. Or he was directing “Spin the Bottle” for Angel, I get confused. He said something along the lines of “me like” and producer Ben Edlund and I trucked back to our Santa Monica offices to put the finishing touches on the outline. At around 1:30 that morning, we finished the outline and cracked a celebratory beverage. I think Ben enjoyed it more than I did because he was laughing on his way out the door; it might have had something to do with the four days I had to write the script. He’d recently written “Jaynestown” in about that amount of time and he was anticipating how much fun I was about to have. That must have been it, right?

So I spent four crazy days writing constantly, cursing in Chinese, sleeping very little and having dreams about playing bocci ball with Adam Baldwin. I love Adam dearly, but in my dreams he cheats. When I emerged from my cocoon on Monday, I had a script... and an epiphany. Despite all my anxiety, I actually had tons of fun writing the script. I loved writing these characters, I loved living in this world, I loved everything. YOU GUYS! (sniff)

I also loved being done! And watching as the best cast and crew in town turned the pretty pictures in my head into reality was a blast. I’m extremely grateful and indebted to everyone who worked their gluteal regions off to make this episode as cool as it is. It’s a bit of a departure -- we have a Core planet, sonic rifles, and some big bad villains swooping in to complicate things. It’s sort of Ocean’s Eleven meets The X-Files in space. Or Curse of the Mummy meets The A-Team. Also heavily influenced by Chico and the Man. All right, I don’t know. Just watch it and you can tell me.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoyed making it. I think you will!

Alright I finally got to see the whole series (I was broke, give me a break).

Some things:

1:Wash wore the mark of death on the show. Zoe/Mal was the realtionship that was going to eventually happen. I think the biggest sign of foreshadowing was when The Alliance guy asked if she loved him and Zoe instinctively thought he meant Mal. Although her and Mal faking the get together at the end of War Stories was HILARIOUS.

2: This has got to be the only show I have seen where all the female characters of purpose were HAWT to me. Even river in a quirky way. I always have had the hots for Gina Torres, Saffron and THE RACK~!, Inara nad those big ass eyes, and Kaylee in her cuteness....hotness all abound...good job casting.

3: I was a fan of Nathan Fillian...now he has stepped into the James Marsters level of markdom from me. Some guys make you want to take up acting and he is the second for me.

4: The man they call Jayne is the fucking ~GOLD! thats all I can say about that.

5: I am PISSED I won't get to know about Book. Very interesting character.

6: Out of Gas is one of my favorite hours of television ever. Jesus. The funny thing, even though I knew that Mal wouldn't die, I felt like it really could happen and I was worried. Now that is good writing.

7: Zoe: No Jayne...this is something the Captin needs to handle himself.

Mal: NO IT ISN'T!

Zoe: Oh...

*they shoot the SHIOT out of the guy*

probably my favorite line.

8: You could tell they all genuinely liked each other on the show and were enjoying themselves. Its a damn shame it had to end.

9: Early...that was a fucking performance. Possibly my favorite villan performance.

10: Tracy/Holden...whatever character you want to remember the guy as, he went 3 for 3 on Mutant Enemy shows...damn is that guy a good actor. Whatever Joss does, he has got to get a show that he is a regular.

I have so much more to say about this show...Damn it was great and I personally HATE fox now. FUCK FOX~!

I didn't see it this way AT ALL.

The joke was the Alliance guy asked the question "And you love him?" When you still thought he was asking Inara about Mal. Then the joke became that Zoe wouldn't talk about her private relationship with Wash...but Wash wouldn't shut up about it.

Yeah that was how the camera panned, but Zoes first reaction (if I am remembering correctly) was that she assumed the guy was talking about Mal and the Alliance guy said "I meant your husband".

The sexual tension was even mentioned by WASH in War stories. Although I'm sure it came off as just "wtf ever Wash" , but I still say there was something to that.

I don't think they'd kill off Wash - he's the Xander of the group. I'd see Zoe, Inara, or Book dead before Wash. Inara definitely had the mask of death on her.

I would go with Inara. I see her leaving the ship for a while and then coming back and saving them all and telling Mal she loves him and he confesses his love for her and they are all happy happy and then she tells him she is dying. Her having a Terminal Illness, I think, was where they were going to go with her character. Why else would she leave paradise? Why would she have such a fear of death? Why would she be on Serenity??

I think Serenity means 2 things:

Life

&

Death

Simon sez in Out Of Gas "I always thought Serenity had a sort of funerial sound to it" , and then he says "I don't want to die on this ship" to which Inara says "I don't want to die at all". Inara loved the ship the first time she saw it, it has a special meaning to her. She either sees life in that -sees that you can create a new life in that-, or she sees Death in it. Either way, she sees peace. I think she found out she was sick while getting her yearly exam, left the academy (either on her own, or was forced out - I would say the former), and found the ship. The chinese lettering under her timer means "short interval" - which we think is a joke because of how her clients don't take too long in bed, but it could very well mean she expects to die soon. It may also explain the needle.

I didn't sense the sexual tension between Mal and Zoe. Infact, I really liked that their relationship was purely platonic. They know each other so well. They've been through hell together. There is such respect and commitment. Zoe picking Wash in War Stories I think clearified who she really loved.

Oh, I agree that was the case. For then. But Willow clearly loved Xander. Spike Clearly loved Drucilla. Cordy clearly loved...well...Cordy. Its a Mutant Enemy production and oddly enough if you go back, you can see the seeds of every relationship that happened in the shows. These were the seeds for this one.

There were seeds planted in "difficulties" in the relationship between Zoe and Wash, and Inara/Mal was definitely ill-fated, so that would leave Mal and Zoe open (def. Mal). However, I think Jayne and Kaylee would have been the surprise relationship on the show.

Oh, and WELCOME RIPPER~! That post made my day (Which, I guess doesn't say much about how exciting my life is... but it says something... it says something...) :)

Inara is quite possibly the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She actually might beat out Vanna White crica 1987 and Miss Elizabeth crica 1989. Truly, she is the winner of the "Jenny Calendar Memorial Award For That Funny Feelin Down In My Pants". A very attractive cast indeed with Summer Glau being near fixation-levels of goodness. It's not that she's hot or foxy or fucktacular, but she does such a good job with the River character and her performance is soooo awesome that you can't take your eyes off of her. Plus that girl can bend. YOWZA. Zoe is the strangest of all the women, because I thought she looked good as Jasmine, but I didn't get the hype everyone was putting on her (moreso the cast than anything). But the more and longer I look at her the more straight-up beautiful she is. Very strange. I really don't know what to say about Kaylee that LOTC couldn't say 100x's better. All I can say is that there is this girl in my class who sounds EXACTLY like her (Kaylee, not Jewel Staite) and I smile every time she talks (Which was extra fun today because she was doing a sales presentation on Durex condoms... maybe Ripper posting wasn't what made my day now that I think of it :) )

Some notes from the videos on the Fox Firefly homepage:

- In a Tim Minear interview, he said Books secret "will not be what you think".

- Washes shadow puppets routine is a must see.

- (Fillion really loudly from behind the camera while Morena is talking about him) "Who's your favourite actor to work with on Firefly?"

"Naaathaaan"

"Riiiight!"

- (interviewer) "Hey Nathan, how do you feel about the sexual tension between Mal and Inara"

(Nate sits down beside interviewer) "Good, except for the sexual tension parts"

- "Boo" > name of Jaynes pistol

"Binky" > name of Jaynes knife

- "Go fuck yourself" (you have to see it to find out who Alan says that to)

- Summer Glau's interview is really, really, really, really.... good.

-"Why Firefly will be cool"

"Uh... I dunno........... SPACESHIPS~!"

- Extensions on some features on the DVD (Nathan practicing his Chinese)

-Fillion tried out for the role of Angel

- "Everyone asks me what Firefly is... what is firefly... it's a TV show, morons"

- "but with action... and a whore~!"

- "No bumpy foreheads, no living long or prospering"

I watched the Out of Gas Commentary tonight, and something struck me. It wasn't _just_ about Mal and the ship, it was about _everyone_ and the ship. All the characters were introduced to Serenity in a different way.

Zoe was introduced to it with Mal. Her reason for being on the ship is to be at Mals side.

Wash was introduced to the ship from underneath the pilots console. His reason for being on the ship was to fly it (duh).

Kaylee was introduced to the ship in the engine room. Her reason to be on the ship was to be on a ship.

Inara was introduced to the ship in the shuttle. It represents freedom and independence. She can get away from (insert whatever she is running from) on Serenity and she can get away from Serenity in the shuttle. No complications.

Jayne was introduced to the ship through the opportunity to have his own bunk. This represents both Jaynes frisky side and it gives him stability - it keeps him level; it gives him direction. Having his own bunk was the thing which put him over to join Mal and Zoe.

Mal's introduction to the ship was stated in the commentary.
