Slickster Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Almost every year, there's a mystery entrant who enters the Rumble unannounced and usually gets a cheap pop. Who's it gonna be this year? I'm guessing either Hogan or Savage (to get hype for WMXX) or perhaps even Dusty Rhodes (a guaranteed cheap pop). Your thoughts?
Youth N Asia Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 They have so many guys on the roster I don't know if there's room for one. Taker was annouced last year as returning, so there was no real suprise last year. I'm all for another Honky Tonk Man spot.
Slickster Posted January 8, 2004 Author Report Posted January 8, 2004 (edited) For background, here's some of the past Mystery Entrants: 1991: Shane Douglas 1992: Colonel Mustafa 1993: Carlos Colon 1994: Sparky Plugg, Greg Valentine 1995: Dick Murdoch 1996: Dory Funk, (Takao) Omori, SWAT Team #1 and #2, Doug Gilbert 1997: Pierroth, Mil Mascaras, Cibernetico, Latin Lover 1998: Mankind, Dude Love 1999: Mabel (aka Viscera) 2000: Bob Backlund 2001: Drew Carey, Honky Tonk Man, Big Show, Haku 2002: -none- 2003: -none- Edited January 8, 2004 by The Hollywood Fashion Plate
Youth N Asia Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 If you count Taker for 03 you have to count: Gunn, Perfect, GOldust, and Godfather for 02. Taker was annouced as returning that night...but I think they hurt it by making him #30, it wasn't as good knowing when he was going to pop up. And I think Haku was 2001 also
TheFranchise Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'd Say Big Show was a mystery in 2001.
Youth N Asia Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Drew Carey in 2001 If that were WCW he would have tossed Kane out and had a good showing. I'm glad he was just comedy and didn't affect anything. Wasn't Jeff Hardy one a few years ago? He was on the shelf for a while and came out right after Matt did.
Guest wayzing Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 For background, here's some of the past Mystery Entrants: 1993: Shane Douglas 1994: Great Kabuki, (Geni'chiro) Tenryu 1995: Dick Murdich 1996: Dory Funk, (Takao) Omori, SWAT Team #1 and #2, Doug Glbert 1997: Pierroth, Mil Mascaras, Cibernetico, Latin Lover 1998: Honky Tonk Man 1999: Viscera 2000: Bob Backlund 2001: Honky Tonk Man 2002: none 2003: Undertaker I'm pretty sure Tenryu was announced as one of the participants in the weeks leading up to the 1994 Rumble (much like that youngster Carlos Colon )
TheFranchise Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Drew Carey in 2001 If that were WCW he would have tossed Kane out and had a good showing. I'm glad he was just comedy and didn't affect anything. Wasn't Jeff Hardy one a few years ago? He was on the shelf for a while and came out right after Matt did. 2002, Both Hardy's and Lita were shelved by Taker, but both Hardy's were in the rumble.

I forgot all the buildup videos for Taker's return; he's no mystery entrant then. Sorry!
Damaramu Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I believe that both of the Hardy Boyz were. This was after they'd broken up and now they were back together...or something.
Guest Mulatto Heat Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Shane Douglas was in the '93 Rumble? No he wasn't, he was in the 1991 Rumble. But Carlos Colon was in the 93 Rumble. 2002 had no 100% surprise entrants. Both Hardy Boys (off a hiatus after being destroyed by Undertaker) were announced beforehand. Same with Undertaker last year.
Slickster Posted January 8, 2004 Author Report Posted January 8, 2004 I've made a few changes to the list; that's what I get for not double-checking some stuff I thought I knew.
dubq Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 There's no way it's going to be Dusty, especially after they just released Dustin for the umpteenth time...
haVoc Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Taker will probably be a "surprise" this year. I can't really think of any free agents.
Guest Mulatto Heat Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Oh yeah, I remember Kabuki AND Tenryu were both announced before the PPV. It was a favor for Mr. Fuji after Jack Tunney let Lex Luger into the Rumble (since Luger had his 'one and only' title shot at the previous SummerSlam).
dubq Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Taker will probably be a "surprise" this year. I can't really think of any free agents. I don't see Taker coming back this early.. unless his hair grows really, really fast.
haVoc Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I still can't see Taker returning as full blown 90's "Deadman." I think it's going to be a blend of Deadman and biker Taker. So it's not so cartoon spooky and he won't need to have the really long hair.
Downhome Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Taker will not be at this years Rumble, so don't get your hopes up if you want to see it this year.
2GOLD Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Plus to waste the Taker on the Rumble??? Talk about anti-climatic. Just have Kane get struck with a lighting bolt...or have Taker send out Marty Jennety dressed as the Deadman to throw off Kane.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 They can't really do surprises unless it returns from injury ala Billy Gunn. Its because they say 15 from SmackDown! and 15 from RAW.
Downhome Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 They'll book Taker at the Royal Rumble, but he wont be there in person. Kane will be dominating someone, perhaps it's the middle of the match and it just has Kane/Benoit in it at the time. Right when it seems that Benoit is going over the top, the lights go out, you hear the well known "toll" and then the music going from there. The lights come back on to see Kane staring up the ramp from in the ring. Benoit then comes up, somehow takes Kane out, and there you go. That wont happen, but something along those lines will take place.
Downhome Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 They can't really do surprises unless it returns from injury ala Billy Gunn. Its because they say 15 from SmackDown! and 15 from RAW. The only way they could have a surprise entrant, is if it's a surprise "signee" to whatever brand they come out for. Just watch, it'll be Chyna coming out for RAW.
2GOLD Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'll still hold out hope for like 100 Undertakers surrounding the ring and freaking out Kane ala the 100 Stingers that night on NITRO. Then from behind...MARTY tosses out Kane. Instant Rumble Classic moment.
TheFranchise Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Bring back the night of a thousand Vinces!
Guest Dave O'Neill, Journalist Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 For background, here's some of the past Mystery Entrants: 1996: Dory Funk, (Takao) Omori, SWAT Team #1 and #2, Doug Gilbert First of all, wasn't that Terry Funk? And he and Mick spent the whole time kicking the crap out of each other???? Second of all Swat Team #1 and #2? WTF??
Guest Choken One Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Terry Funk was in 1997 and was announced... Dory was in 1995...
TheFranchise Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 You're both wrong, Funk was 98, i'm sure. This was when Foley appeared Three times.
