snuffbox 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2004 u h...Clinton WAS often shown in a less-than-intelligent light by the media. He was given nicknames such as 'Bubba' and basically compared to trailer-trash. Both Clinton's and Bush's public perception(hick vs. dumb) were mostly pushed by the 'lighter media' such as late night talk shows, saturday night live, movies, comedy, etc. Neither has been seriously depicted as such by the 'serious media' such as newsprint and televised news(this doesnt include fox news) although both have been on occasion. It happened to both, just different situations.

They called Arkansas backwater and hick, but I've never heard Clinton called ANYTHING (well, outside of a terrible speaker following his unbelievably boring speech at the 1988 Convention). SNL never EVER hinted that Clinton was dumb. They played on him being a glutton and possible drug dealer --- but he was NEVER construed as being dumb. Not one single time that comes to mind. -=Mike
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2004 It was all a Big Media conspiracy, Mike. Big Media knew Clinton was smart -- almost as smart as the editors for the NY Times. But in order for us dumb folk to connect with him they had to make all those hick/Bubba references...
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 You know, one thing I wish some of the more partisan people could stand is parody. "Janet Reno's Dance Party" was my favorite SNL skit for a year or two.

Clinton was heavyset, did grow up in a trailer, has a few undesirable kin, and acted like a Kennedy. Bush cant enunciate words outside of a middle schooler's vocabulary, has a history of substance use, and generally looks lost and confused.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 Anyone see the SNL parody of the Democrats tonight? I'm paraphrasing, but at least the punchlines are intact: Kerry: Some people say that I'm condescending, but that's not true. I'm an well-natured guy that carries a small sense of entitlement. Clark: I'm a four-star general in cashmere. What more do you want? Sharpton: I AM LIKE A LIVING CHRIS ROCK MOVIE. (...) Kerry: Look, Howard Dean has gone far enough to suggest that Osama bin-Laden might be innocent. This is quality stuff, America, and you just aren't biting. Clark: I could call him too conservative, but hell, I'm a registered Republican. Gephardt (The guy did the voice REALLY good, btw): I have more experience. This is my ninth time running for President. Lieberman: But this isn't about us, this is about Howard Dean's failures. Kerry: When George W Bush says that Howard Dean is going to raise taxes on the middle-class to fund his gay Vermont wedding to Saddam Hussein, you're going to feel like you've heard it before, and you have. From us.

From us. For my money, the FUNNIEST political thing I EVER saw on SNL was in 1991, when they had a Democratic debate to see who would be stuck running against Bush. Cuomo: What this election boils down to is one thing --- I have mob ties. Tipper Gore: Al has taken our two children to a gay porno. Lloyd Bentsen: Folks, I'm old. I'm only going to get older. Older and more confused. Heck, I can't remember the names of half of the people up here... -=Mike
The Robfather 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 Clinton was played up as a smart man who believed in nothing, other than his own political survival. Bush is played as an idiot, but someone who actually believes in a few things.

From us. It's kind of a shame, really, because if Kerry had thrown around a few lines like this one here and there in his real campaign he might not be in the fix that he's in. "Janet Reno's Dance Party" was my favorite SNL skit for a year or two. I'm right there with you. Hell, I dug the skit so much that Reno was my Halloween costume for that year. Kind of hard since one of the few vibes shared by everybody is that calling disagreers unpatriotic is a Bad Thing. Hell, I dug the skit so much that Reno was my Halloween costume for that year. Aw man. If I wasn't such a stuffy ol' conservative to be caught in drag I probably would have tried that. I can do the voice (the manly imitation voice, not the real voice) perfectly. Yeah and you oppose just about any kind of Democrat-backed agenda bill you hate children/eldery/minorities. It's a two-way street. Libs call conservatives heatless and conservatives call libs unpatriotic. It's all good...

Bush is played as an idiot, but someone who actually believes in a few things. I don't know if its an angle ever taken on him in America (i'd guess maybe not or at least much less so)) but i've increasingly seen Bush portrayed as a dangerously narrow-minded bible basher rather than a dumb fool. The whole 'American Jesus' mentality he so often seems to endorse in the minds of some critics/observers is an increasingly regular topic for debate.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2004 I've increasingly seen Bush portrayed as a dangerously narrow-minded bible basher rather than a dumb fool. *sarcasm on* What's the difference? *sarcasm off* Trust me, Bush has been portrayed as Bible-thumper over in the States, too (It really happened during the '00 election -- ever since then it has been scaled back, although it may be making a comeback now. I personally haven't noticed)...
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I don't know many people that can honestly say they have looked past the evening news as a source for who will get their vote. Past the evening news? I wish. Now we find out that Comedy Central wasn't kidding when they said, "The Daily Show--where more Americans get their news...than probably should."
