Actually, I've heard a ton of different stories about the "Luke yelling 'Carrie' instaed of 'Leia'" thing. I've heard that he is actually yelling "Hey there!" I've also heard he did yell "Leia!" and it just doesn't sound right.

As far as "bad directing" or "doing another take", on the low budjet Star Wars had at the time, I doubt they had all of the great technology that we have now to be able to see and hear exactly what just happened seconds later. More importantly, I doubt they were able to reshoot the scene once they heard the mistake. The set was probably struck already.

The only other option was to ADR it in post, but with all of the crowd noise and sound effects there it no way they could get it clean or make it sound right. So, they left it in. It took years for me to hear this and I am sure that there are quite a few people who have seen Star Wars many times who have not noticed.

Mark Hamill shouts 'CARRIE!' when Lea runs to meet him after the X wing battle also. We can't decide if that says more about Hamill's acting or Lucas' directing.

Blame Lucas, normally you would do a retake.

Why blame Lucas? He didn't direct ROTJ.

Actually, that screw-up was from Episode IV, which Lucas did direct. So it would be his fault.

Didn't he just direct that one and decide he sucked at it?

Actually Lucas was a director to be reckoned with in 1977.

He made 3 films, wonderful college film sci-fi romance (THX-1138), a coming of age story that you could tell came straight from the heart (American Graffiti), and a mind-blowing tribute to serials, samurai films, and Dune. (Star Wars).

He stopped directing because he got so busy with his share of the work at ILM, the Star Wars franchise, and Indiana Jones, and never really wanted to direct another one till the prequels. I think his problem now is that he's more engrossed in the technical side of filmmaking rather than the artistic side.

Not from a movie, but from "Serenity", the Firefly pilot-

After Serenity escapes from the Reavers, they cut to a shot with Mal, Zoe and Wash, who is at the helm holding the stick. Except that when you look you can clearly see that he's not holding anything, just pantomiming it.
