Tiger Mask (Misawa) pinned Buck Zumhoffe. Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda beat The Fabulous Ones when Windham pinned Lane. Giant Baba pinned Bob Brown. Rick Martel DCO Harley Race (16:00). Sherri Martel won a "battle royal." Also in the match were: Debbie Combs, Candi Divine, Rose Divine, Joyce Grable, Kat LeRoux, Despina Montagas, Misty Blue Simmes, and Luna Vachon. AWA Americas Champ Sgt Slaughter beat Kamala via DQ. AWA World Tag Champs Curt Hennig & Scott Hall beat Bill & Scott Irwin when Hall pinned Bill. Scott LeDoux beat Larry Zbysko via DQ in a "boxing" match. AWA World Champ Stan Hansen beat Nick Bockwinkle (10:00) via DQ. The Road Warriors beat The Freebirds (Garvin & Hayes) (7:00) in a "steel cage" match when Animal pinned Garvin. Jimmy Snuka & Greg Gagne beat Nord the Barbarian & Bruiser Brody in a "steel cage" match when Snuka pinned Nord. Verne Gagne pinned Adnan Al-Kassie in a "steel cage" match. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The build up to the 2 cage matches has been lost over time (a sign of Verne's ineffective promoting at the time?) but having now watched some AWA TV shows from Feb of 86 I totally get the hot year long angles that the top two matches blowoff. The card is bloated at a numbing 4 hours long, but if you skip the crap it ain't that bad. Stan Hansen was very Austinish at this point as he was swearing and beating up random officials in the build up to his big rematch with Bockwinkel. Hansen wrestled Leon "Baby Bull" White aka Vader in the weeks leading up to WRock and the match was HORRID. Vader just looks like a random balding pudgy jobber. Their match saw Hansen work Vader's arm over for like 6 mins as the crowd chants "Boring" Vader finally gets swatted with the Lariat and pinned. Hansen then cuts a promo talking about how he's (Hansen) is fat, ugly and none the less unbeatable...then he chases the ring annoncer out of the ring. Brody and Nord's jobber squashes leading up to the show (With Verne watching from ringside) are wild. They lose by DQ several times. I never knew that Snuka was added to the main event after these two had injured Blackwell. Verne talks on commentary about how fans are flying in from around the World to see "The Greatest Wrestling Event of all time" and he expects the Metrodome to set a new indoor attendence record. I was a big mark for crappy AWA wrestling (Road Warriors, Brody, Hansen, Kamala, Debeers) and hated the cartoonish WWF, so I dug it then. But I really don't remember too much about it, and so didn't have much to say when the thread was started. If I could find a way to watch it again now, I would in a heartbeat.

The On screen graphics are Atari level, no wrestler's music (Minus Buck Z's Boombox "Money for Nothing"), The match to match transitions consist of interviews where the microphone fails to work at times s well as watching the ring annoncer pace in ring, The "celebrities" are local Minnesota DJ's and business owners and some sitcom actor from "Good Times" The 20,000 fans in a 60,000 seat arena is a unique visual that wouldn't be allowed today. And anyone who thinks HHH has an ego..... 56 year old Verne Gagne spends 10 mins having the Governer of Minn put him over. Then instead of a replica title or plaque, he hands the governer a T shirt and hat to commerate his Honorary membership in the AWA.

"His style's slow, he's about 7'4" and 100 pounds (well, 316 pounds), and yet somehow he managed to become a Japanese legend and three time NWA World Champion. I'd assume he kissed Rikidozan's ass but Rikidozan was dead before Baba ever got started in the business. " (rolls eyes) While I wouldn't be surprised if this match was horrid, you should probably do more research before you makes stupid statements like that. Despite his athletic limitations, Baba was still a great worker. Even though he was no doubt very fragile, he bumped his ass off and was almost always willing to take all of his opponent's high end offense. He was a surprisingly excellent mat worker, better than Flair that's for damn sure. Great seller, smart worker and rather innovative, helping to lay down the ground work for modern heavyweight wrestling in Japan. Extremely motivated in 94 and 93, the aging Baba played a good sized role in several great tag matches. Unlike a certain old fart who's been stuck in a time warp for the the past decade or so, Baba added more modern moves to his already large credible move set. When was the last time you saw Flair bust out a DDT or Cross Armbreaker? Sorry for going off topic but seeing the pimping of un-informed comments that people have a good chance of seeing gets me a tad irritated.
