1) They beat St. Louis IN ST.LOUIS. NOBODY could do that. And they did WITHOUT Davis, for the most part.

Correction: Martz lost that game, Carolina didn't win it.

I missed Mike Martz not stopping a long pass pay in 2OT. Heck, if they have HIM playing CB, they deserved to lose.

But you can't let Martz off the hook for having the ball deep in Carolina territory at the 1:30 mark or so (with one time out, I believe) and playing for a field goal and overtime instead of at least TRYING to put it in the end zone. Sure, his confidence in Bulger probably wasn't high at that point, but he could have just either put Warner in there, or better yet, run Marshall Faulk, who pretty much brought them down the field on their previous drive (the one before the onside kick).

I'm annoyed at the whole "Who cares about this game?" mentality from big city sports writers, to be honest. Geez, NY reporters were creaming in their pants for the Subway Series, yet were completely oblivious that NOBODY gave a dang BESIDES them.

 

This game will be fun. These are two top-notch teams with no real negatives. Both play solid defense. Both have decent offenses. Both have good special teams. Both have top-notch coaches.

 

I think Carolina will win, but I don't think either team is really superior to the other.

I know this topic was done to death, but I missed that debate for some reason.

 

I'm not taking ANYTHING away from Carolina, but Martz had the momentum going for his team with that TD and onside kick recovery, managed to get down to the Carolina.....20 I think it was, and just STOPPED. If I recall correctly, the Rams got a first down and Martz killed something like 1:15 off the clock while the fans were booing and the commentators scratched their heads. He didn't even TRY to put it in the end zone. Imagine if Wilkins missed that FG? Martz wouldn't have been able to get out of the Taxpayers Dome alive.

 

All I'm saying is that the Panthers almost let that game slip through their fingers, and Martz's lack of spine gave them life. They (eventually) took advantage of it, and that's why they went to the title game while Martz got crucified in St. Louis.

The reporters will have to actually look at how the teams play and all that technical stuff, and it scares the hell out of them that they have to do actual WORK!

Stephen Davis, hype the living hell out of him! Talk about the stories behind the front four of the Panthers, make some of those guys into the next Sapp since they seem to like to talk and at least they make sense unlike Mr. "Not really that good anymore, just fat and lazy".

Im sure they have presold commercial slots for OT, just in case.

 

Of course, no Super Bowl has gone OT before. This game just screams 2 or 3 OTs just to piss off CBS because no one on the east coast would see Survivor at 1 am, but honestly the game will probably be close but not close enough to tease OT.

Yeah, the NFL has too much parity.

Yeah, god forbid every team has a chance at the start of the year in a league. Yeah, football should be more like MLB.

 

Major sportswriters are just pissed they can't be on their knees before Peyton Manning and kissing the rear of Donovan McNabb.

 

100's of stories staring them in the face and the only thing they can do is complain about who is in the game. Yeah, sports fans REALLY gave a damn about McNabb proving Rush wrong. Oh and Sports fan were all for that Mr Gee Wiz getting to the Super Bowl and then blaming everyone else but himself if they lost.

 

This game will be tight, mainly because the New England offense seems to forget the main purpose when you enter the red zone is to score a touchdown. The Panthers have an amazing front four, but that doesn't matter much with the quick snap throws of Tom Brady. The one thing it does help with is it stops NE from running the ball but then again, the Pats run just to balance the playcalling now anyway.

 

Delhomme is the mystery but if he thinks he'll get away with that touchdown duck he got vs the Eagles against the Pats corners then he may be insane. The Panthers will run and run and run and the combo of Foster/Davis might tire down those Pats linebackers who struggled some against the Colts in the AFC title game late.

 

The key is Deshaun Foster for the Panthers and Tedy Bruschi for the Pats. Bruschi will have to be in charge of keeping Foster and from getting outside cause if Foster gets outside, he is dangerous and if Davis gets his weight in his runs he is nearly unstoppable in the open field. The key defensive will be to keep the backs inside and force Delhomme to beat you with his arm. If the Pats can't prevent the Panthers from getting 3-4 yards a carry, they will be in big trouble when the play action comes up.

 

So, I've been avoiding this pick all week. I've finally decided on the pick.

Well, I was looking at the match-ups

 

Defense vs Defense they are extremely close

Offense vs Offense they are very close

Kicker vs Kicker, Adam has that hands down in the playoffs but John is good

 

They are just so close on every level.

 

Oh and I watched that Gameday thing and Troy Brown has apparently never played a NFL video game in his life. Which I know isn't true but damn, it was pathetic.

Well, Confidential was a repeat, so I decided to pass on a recap, but I did write something regarding the game, including my score, so I might as well post it here.

You know, looking through all this coverage and “expert opinion” these past 2 weeks, I’ve seen a pretty common belief: the Carolina Panthers are the New England Patriots of two years ago, the team that upset a heavily favored Rams team to win the title. Now, I happen to agree with that for the most part, since there are similarities: a QB that wasn’t the starter on Opening Day, who does enough to win without screwing up, a power runner that is able to take the pressure off the QB, a special teams corps that can make plays, and a defense that plays very tough and doesn’t let teams into the end zone much. I definitely can see that comparison, but I don’t think it matters this time around. Why? Has anyone thought about that Rams team? Can you draw any comparisons between them and the ’03 Patriots? I can’t. The 2003 Patriots are no where close to that Rams team, and that’s a GOOD thing. Looking back at that game in New Orleans, the Rams were overconfident, VERY overconfident. The players were talking about dynasties (“Tonight, the dynasty is born!!”), and they seemed to figure that the Patriots team they faced earlier in the season would be the same one they would face in that game. But they were caught off-guard by how NE came out; instead of blitzing the QB like in the first game, the Pats D instead pounded the Rams receivers, getting into their heads and causing them to make mistakes. And I really believe that, on that last drive, the Rams kind of softened up, since they thought the Patriots were playing for OT, which was their last mistake.

 

Where am I going with this? During these last two weeks, have you heard any Patriots player NOT talk about Carolina as “Our toughest game all year” or “We’re going to have to play our best to beat these guys”? There is NO WAY this team will be overconfident; their coach just will not allow it, and the players just don’t have that type of personality. Now, the Carolina Panthers are a good team, you have to be to make it this far, and their defense should be one of the best for the next few years, BUT, I believe that if Carolina wins this game, it will be a bigger upset than the one two years ago. The Patriots are just too focused to get overconfident, or collapse under pressure. The Carolina defensive line is probably the best in the NFL, but the Patriots have the better defense overall. And will people stop saying that the Patriots have no running game? Antowain Smith and Kevin Faulk are enough of a running game to get things done for this team. I’d like them to get a good RB in the first round of the draft, I admit, but it’s enough for right now. Earlier last week, I believed this to be a close, 20-13 game, but as I read all the articles and all the hype, I realized something; the Patriots are just a better overall team. And if you want to make a comparison to past Superbowls, a better comparison is probably the Superbowl in 1986, with NE as the Bears (dominating defense, but no one near the talent of Walter Peyton) and Carolina as the Patriots (scrappy team that won big games on the road to get to the Super Bowl). Carolina will fare a little bit better then that Patriots team did, but it won’t be a close game past the first half. Carolina may not even reach the end zone in this one.

 

Final score: Patriots 28 Panthers 9
